There is only one soldering technique / method that works.  Its a Weller D-550 325 watt gun, tip hot, 0.062 inch diameter solder, and no more than two seconds on the joint.

It's really hard to tell if you're trolling or just cluelessly obnoxious, so kudos on the web of confusion you've achieved.

I have to tell you, if this is your sales pitch to convert us to the Church of the One-way Righteous Crossover, it leaves much to be desired. I've heard more convincing arguments from various cult-like religion folks coming to my door.

Don't raise your voice, improve your argument. A schematic is a good place to start.

And remember...caps lock is cruise control for cool.

Funny story about the florescent lights:D. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, they just released a documentary called "Scramble the Seawolves" awhile back. I know they've shown it on PBS in most places. Cool fact - that's Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs fame as the narrator. That was awesome.

Maybe you can confirm this, but dad said that the hydraulic actuator used to raise and lower the Navy Phantoms' wing tips (to get them up and down the elevator) was not marked as to which side was which when installed...and you wouldn't know until you installed it and activated it as to whether it was on the up or down movement. This often resulted in having either the port or starboard side wingtip in the raised position, and the opposing side in the lowered position, looking like a person holding one arm straight up and the other straight out to the side. When you threw the switch, they'd reverse. It was funny to watch, as long as you weren't the mechanic who had to go back and fix it.

Agree on the F-4 being the SS Camaro of aircraft. Though I'd have to go with '68. Never liked the straight line at the top of the wheel wells on the '69. Give me a 67 or 68 any day.

I was in a training school in the Navy and the better you did in the class the more likely you were to get your choice of duty station. I was 3rd in my class and said I wanted any F-14 squadron on the east coast....thinking the less specific the more likely it was to happen. I was assigned to VF-102 out of NAS Ocenana in Va. Beach, VA. Much to my disappointment it was deemed an F-4 Squadron, in all the literature at the Navy Intel School at Lowery Airforce Base in Colorado. Much to my delight when I arrived at VF-102 in Va Beach it was all Tomcats, baby!

Typical Navy very slow to update things. Still the F-4 was a workhorse and quite the cool looking jet.

Nice! My dad was an ASM and I know he was at Oceania for awhile. He used to tell me a story about how a radar tech would jam a screwdriver in the landing gear safety switch so they could activate the radar in the nose of the Phantom to work on it. One day there was an E-nothing sent to get a bunch of fluorescent light bulbs and he's walking back with a huge armload. The tech told my dad "Watch." and he pointed the radar at the E-nothing and turned it on. All the light bulbs lit up in the guy's arms and he chucked them all in the air. They all imploded all over the floor. The next thing you know, you see this E-nothing attempting to explain to a non-believing, pissed-off chief that "I swear to God they all lit up in my arms!"

Dad was also a mechanic and door gunner for the HAL-3 Seawolves during Vietnam.

Thank you for your service. Long live the Tomcat!

  4. This makes me sad. Some of the last of the active F-4 Phantoms in the world are being retired. It was inevitable, but 60 years since being designed and some airframes that are 50+ years old still flying? Not bad. I'd say only the B-52 and descendants of the UH-1 (Huey) have it beat in longevity. The Phantom is a special plane for me, being both an aircraft that my father maintained in the Navy and my grandfather flew in the Air Force. It has always reminded me of a muscle car, like a flying 1969 Camaro SS. The Phantom is dead. Long live the Phantom.

  5. Random question - Has anyone here ever made or seen some type of clear acrylic or other clear material cover for an exposed crossover (like a turntable dust cover)?

I'm planning on making my Speakerlab K's an open top design (with a minimalist-but-effective front baffle, before anyone says anything) but I live in a house with cats and children (mine are 6 and 9) and I can't help but think a curious child or dumb cat could touch something "interesting-looking" like an exposed capacitor and hurt themselves. Do the crossover caps retain enough voltage (amperage?) to do that or am I making something out of nothing?

Dust is an issue, too. My house has always been dusty.

Crossover display covers - what a nerd I am.

  6. Hey all!

Just wanted to say Thank You for all the input and suggestions while I searched for crossovers and a tweeter.

Thanks to a very generous offer from @Dave A, I have purchased a pair of Type E crossovers which will be converted into Type AA in the near future with his assistance.

I'll modify the subject and leave this up for a day or two before deleting it in case anyone is still looking for me.

The Dayton Audio Planar Horn PHT1-6 tweeters on my speakers are rated at 105db sensitivity, making them good to use with the Heritage style speakers. The other model tweeter you listed may look the same, but are not up to spec for your application.

    Thanks for the clarification!

You will need to replace the K77s with something that can go lower, like the JBL 2404.

The Dayton Audio Planars are 8 ohms, 80 watts power handling, 2 kHz to 26 kHz frequency response w/ 94 dB 1W/1m sensitivity. They recommend crossing over at 3 kHz or above, which is certainly within spec for the A/4500 crossovers.

  9. Assuming no one has AA crossovers to sell or that they're willing to part with, I'm considering going the route of Crites B&K Sound Type A/4500 Crossover with some Dayton Audio PT2C-8 Planar Tweeters that @Khornukopia has been using extensively in his crazy beautiful Khorn & home theater builds.

Anyone have experience with these or maybe have a pair of A/4500's to sell? I don't have any issues with Bob Crites or what he sells, I just hate throwing all my money in the same direction.

Have you determined if your mid-drivers are working properly. I have read many of your posts and seen their pictures, but am not sure if you have tested them out yet.

In any event, if you need mid drivers as well as crossovers and at least one tweeter, there is a package deal on ebay that is not too bad if you need all these parts. AK-3 are good x-overs used in Khorns and should work well for your Speakerlab K redo.

I have/had built a dozen or so Speakerlab speaker pairs back in the day. Always like their products. Never did the K.

Hi. I've used a multimeter on both midranges and the one tweeter I have and all have continuity between terminals. The tweeter measured at about 6.5 ohms and the mids measured 8 ohms each, so I have no reason to suspect a problem with any of them at the moment. I think I can still wrangle EV 1823m diaphragms if I need to.

    Thanks for the link, though.

I think @jimjimbo has some parts recently removed from La Scalas that he's offering up for sale.

I've already been talking with Jim, and his crossovers are AL, which from my research are a bit cost prohibitive to convert to AA. He also wants to sell driver pairs, which I don't need, so I don't want to break up his sales.

@jimjimbo has been extremely helpful and gracious in looking out for me so far.

  12. If anyone is interested, I could sweeten a crossover network deal with a couple of items:

A Hidizs AP80 digital audio player (in great shape with original rubbery case and optional leather case and I'll throw in a 128gb micro SD card) - https://www.hidizs.net/products/ap80

    and/or a

Cambridge Audio DAC Magic XS portable USB DAC (in like new condition, only used at my office) - https://www.cambridgeaudio.com/usa/en/products/hifi-and-home-cinema/dacmagic-xs

I like the "y'all".  Especially when it's an "all y'all"!  (A particularly great way of saying "each and every one of you"!)

I have no familiarity with any of the mentioned models.   If there's an "RP"-whatever it'd likely be best.  Unless it's an MTM design that's horizontal.  Those don't (can't) work right for horizontal spread.

How's about 3 of the suggested model?  Can they be bought in odd lots?

What can I say? I come by it honestly. It's a good, all-purpose word. I'll probably skip the center channel and just get my dad a pair of RP-600m's as it seems the price has inexplicably gone up. Import duties I'm assuming?
