  1. Hi I have a question, it may of been answered but im not trailing through nearly 23k posts to find it Now i posted this question in another thread and they said it may be best answered here, though i thought it was the perfect thread as they where talking about "test" tracks and mastering quality. Anyhow the question is below I have an understanding but not the greatest in the world but enough to get me by, but the less jargon the better. "What i find and i don't know anybody else finds this to be the case, is music that was mastered for LP (analogue) sounds well crap in digital well not that it sounds bad, Its too dam quite, requiring to high of a volume increase/adjustment. Taking the volume control into a noisier segment of its rotation, 12 o'clock and beyond to get similar levels to digital". My guess is!" The music was from a time were it was designed to go through a phono stage with gain adjustments and i feel digital rips/transfers/remasters fail (most of the time) to take that into account. I'd rather actually listen to those tracks on a black disc being played how they where mastered/inteneded to be played but feel that shouldn't be the case. Be interested to know if anybody finds that to be the case or am i completely wrong!? and as to be the may be the case as stated i think it boils down to the phono, it cant be be just lack of dynamics between digital and analogue" I went on to use the migrant song used in Thor Ragnarok as an example. It's obversely been played with and mastered in the film to where i feel the CD/digital download should actually be. Am i wrong? In a way (i feel) kind of a similar situation, but in reverse to guitar hero's rendition of death magnetic (Metallica) and the quite re-release of the album bring it in line with computer games rendition. Just would like to know if people could shine some light on the subject somewhat. No worries if not i just though it would develop and interesting decision we could all learn from!
  2. I Think you may have misunderstood me (as i say easy to do with my poorly written rambles) i understand that the Zeplinlin tapes aren't/weren't digital and that's my point, The tapes would have been digitised and cleaned of noise in the remastering process, so now to be honest they're about as digital as it gets, so why have they not accounted for the gain in the remstereing/digitising process. would it of made the original recordings to noisy? There may not be an answer and its just one of those things and thats fine Edit i also understand they aren't theist sounding recording in general but im using it as an extreme example
  3. Fare enough but it also seems some others arn't either and are slightly contradicting themselves to a certain extent or maybe misunderstanding my post, easy to do I'm not the greatest at spelling and grammar. TBH i feel this is the perfect thread as this what we are talking about, mastering quality/ test tracks. At the end of the day this boils down to what makes a bad recording bad and good recording good, you say the led zeppelin albums are bad, Ive stated a reason as to why i think this may be possible and my general understanding might not world class but i have enough to get me by. And this will get to why you can't use youtube to demo a system For example though the immigrant song its used in Thor Ragnarok and then you have the album version. The thor version is exactly where it should be with regards to mastering, they've obversely gone in and made adjustments and in creased the overall gain, go to the remastered version of the digital albam for example, though as stated doesn't sound bad just a lot lower in volume? as stated I've given my thoughts but no else has really answered my question other than saying digital through and through and analogue through and through and for me that doesn't really stand.
  4. Humm I don’t know, still find it quite abit. Led zeppelin remasters for example and sounds the same through my KEF LS50 Wireless and there about as all digital as it gets. Perhaps I’m doing something wrong then but have never found an answer either way. As I say I feel it comes down to the phone stage my guess. Shouldn’t mater regardless weather it’s digital or not if the recording is low in gain going in, it’s going to be low coming out. no?
  5. Is there somthing your not liking especially about the sound? harsh, not enough detail, to warm, too cold, some spark just generally lacking you've told us nothing other than you have hankering to change something (the worst reason by the way) Here's my 2 cents. TBH in my experience especially seeing as you're using a sub (and this will be maybe a little unpopular but it will save you money) your not going to notice much difference if at all, they all have the same house sound. Yes! maybe just maybe a little more refined the more you spend, but to be honest really all your buying is a bigger box which can produce slightly more efficient music for bigger rooms which in all honesty to your room is not that big (unless thats meters!) there heresy should be doing a grand job. They're pretty much all using the same drivers with the exception of the k horns and la scala's and even then the difference will be subtle at best . I would 100% do it if your trading in the subwoofer the differences won't be subtle at all otherwise i would leave well alone. But pick a budget and stick to it remember you need physical boundarys for some of the models. In all honesty i would look into (which you haven't mentioned) your source and/or amp and see if there is any more improvements to be made there something more synergistic, class a single ended, tube amp, tube rolling, betting digital front end, better streaming unit, better dac, something as simple as further optimising speaker placement (this can always be bettered in many homes). To me it sounds like your wanting to upgrade for the sake of it and in my experience thats the worst reason and always end up in a spiral (i know form experiance and your mind is already in a spiral) it needs a clear end. See how far you can push the Heresy's AND NEVER EVER over spend forget what's higher up in the range! (you dont buy an audi a6 and then buy lambo because you buy the best out there) never pay the price on the ticket theres always a deal be had. I learnt along time ago people will spend your money quicker than water on a forum and fule the fire for G.A.S. If anything at all!, id add a second subwoofer to even out the bass response in your room, simple.
  6. To add to my comment a little, test music, i really think should be something you enjoy and your infantly familiar with, doesn't really matter what it is the equipment just need to reproduce what your favourite tracks have on them. For example small details like Amy Winehouse's figures taping in time to music on the back to Black album, any well designed speaker/system can play dynamics but its it the small things that count, it's the butter between the bread. We could spit names all day, this and that, with what are "technically" well recorded tracks but really no track is going to be a "test" track if you don't like the music to begin with. Some of the best recorded music ever is the daft punk sound track to Tron legacy, and i believe won an oscar for its score (could be wrong), along with Hans zimmers scores, gladiator springs to mind with its hunting vocals (if you can call the it that) and simple rising percussion, but doesn't matter a jot if you don't like the music as your not going to be familiar with it. Test music is what you enjoy its why i gave a list, a little it of everything so you/people might find something you/they enjoy. But i also i know sounds good. Anyhow, What i do find and i don't know anybody else finds this to be the case, is music that was mastered for LP sounds well crap in digital well not that sounds bad, Its too dam quite requiring to high of a volume increase. Taking the volume control into noisier parts of its rotation, 12 o'clock and beyound to get similar levels to digital. The music was from a time were it was designed to go through a phono stage with gain adjustments and i feel digital rips fail (most of the time) to take that into account. Id rather actually listen to those tracks on a black disc being played how they where mastered/inteneded to be played. And my next edition to my system will be a good turn table and phono stage with adjustable gain (just my rambles) but interested to know if anybody finds that to be the case or am i completely wrong!?
  7. The Revels and the klipsch are very different animals and i really enjoy/enjoyed both but they do sound somewhat similar and don't at the same time, neither or are better than one another they just do different things. As far as mini monitors go those Revels are in a league of the own and is really as good as its gets having to step up 2-3k more to get any substantial difference/or what one would call an upgrade and the differences are not 2 times the prices!. The Revels just required more good quality power and not just watts (and thats getting to be a very expensive game these days) to get them singing, and its more than the Sugden could provide and really wouldn't expect it too but in use it gave it really good shot. BUT the Heresy's really do something a lot different to Revels they render things somewhat different to one another, both bold and dynamic though. The Revels compress a lot more at high volume, the Heresy's just dont let up even with the single ended class A. But the bass on this mini montior was very impressive, to the point with some tracks you would ask where's the sub is, but they had there limits and really went no lower the Heresy do but being ported they pressurised the room far more . But as i said, i enjoyed both but i just wanted to come away from naim and the only other amplification that sounded good with the Revels (IMO) was mark levison (seeing as they where developed with that brand in mind, both harmon house brands) and thats money i just didn't want/couldn't spend. The klipsch and Sugden really is the best my money could buy and the sugden being the very valve like without the downsides valves gettings me 90% of the way there and thats a comprise i was willing to make. But im glad i did it taken nearly three months for the heresy to really open up and amp (considering how hot it gets) is still burning in. Hope you guys get to expericance sugden with the heritage line at some point it really is match made for each other.
  8. Yes indeed the little Qutest released last year to replace the 2qute i believe
  9. Hi, Thought i would introduce myself, as i'm new here and from England so a little different im guessing from average! A little history. I come from an all Naim setup (very english) with revel m106 speakers, long story short i had a few reliability issues which i wont go into as i dont want to bad mouth the brand as they did everything possible to help me out and wouldn't put anyone off owning the brand as it does sound stellar when all working correctly. Anyhow the experience left a somewhat bad taste in my mouth. So i was able to sell my gear and return the parts that weren't working for a full refund. Firstly i just swapped out the amp and dac with a class A Sugden a21 signature and Chord Qutest dac (again about as english as you can get) with the hope of keeping the wonderful revel m106's. Alas, Even though the 106's sounded great through the Sugden, chord combo it wasn't able to take command of the revels in the same way the Naim could! SO the hunt began for some new speakers! Luckily my dealer had just started stocking the heritage line so i went about demoing the Heresy 3 and Forte 3's and eventually settled on the Heresy's. The bass, is more than deep enough for my room. Really don't know what some of you gents and girls are talking about in regards to bass, in my system there full, fat and fast with no bloat what so ever! Yes you don't get that last octave but if your coming from standmounts and/or small floor standers then thats the bass your going to get again more important things as far as im concerned. And no i wont take them off the floor, tried it, sounded awful! They need all the boundaries and are clearly designed for it. As for the sound with the Sugden and chord in tow, the Heresy sound is clean and airy, not bright though! with none of the wall of sound people keep referring too yes its big and room filling but they're far more precise than that. They actually image incredibly well and up there with the Revels in the at regard (no mean feet). Detail isn't as strong as the Revels but i can still clearly follow everything in and around the track. With the amps 23 watts giving more than enough head room to make them sing, really sing. The amp delivers a fatigue free sound that one can listen to for hours. Bad and good recording sound great but you do know your listening to lesser recording when played. and perfectly mirrors the Heresy's sound while giving them bass heft needed. though the Sugden like the volume up a touch more than normal to get the sound come alive a little more. For those who wish to know what the dac sounds like! It's basically a chord hugo2 with none of the portability functions, amp, battery, cross feed and so on. And because of it, it sounds far better. The sound is light footed with an easy flowing nature, nothing "digital" about it. Its very organic, again its not bright but has plenty of detail on tap makes "death from above 1979" sound less compressed and easier follow than my naim dac. The bass hummmm, its the best ive heard at this price delivered with ease and starts and stops on a penny. Its simple honest hifi. I guess thats the word for this dac, Honest nothing, hidden if its there it played but never fatiguing it very finely judged. If you don't think dac's can make a difference then fine im not hear to say other wise, but if you want to listen to one, IMO its one of the best sounding dac's on the market, don't hesitate to demo one. Yes its expensive but i believe you get what you pay for. For those that may be wondering with this combo the dac needs to be set to its 1V setting, one! too allow for greater control of the volume control and two, the amps full power is reached far to early on the volume at around 9 o'cloc when set to 2V. As for Cables, im not a "believer", they either make a difference or not it's not a faith. I know for a fact they do, BUT! its tuning and thats all . Its not a drastic change and also its not always the most expensive cables that make a difference, sometimes its the £2 per meter 79 strand somtimes its the £30 a meter stuff they all make a difference good or bad some amps and compoents are completely indifferent. In my case for this system, Atlas hyper cables made massive difference over my linn k20 ( cheap as chips over here and was perfect for the naim) and QED interconnects . But im not hear to start a cable debate, as with all things in hi fi go and listen for yourself and make your own damn mind up. Don't hear a difference, great save your money and move on. Just don't be a sheep/lemming, same for dac's and amps. But the biggest thing i love about this system is the fact everything in this system is assembled by hand by great machinists and craftsmen and woman some very local some not so local (klipsch) and i love that! Attached a few picture below forgive the room its about to be re-modelled (decorated) and hope to show you that in the future. sorry for my bad grammar and spelling in advance, im a designer by trade and don't write much at all
  10. Not really sure what your trying achieve!? Free music? But Qobuz offer streaming and download. On a rolling contract for streaming that can be stopped anytime. And then download the tracks you really love. If not try sound cloud. Or the same could be done with Spotify. Listen to discovery playlist and the download cd/hi res files for keeping
  11. My first post! so i thought i would talk about music rather than gear! LOL anyhow I listen to a vast selection of music, for testing and showing off i use all sorts from modern to classic from electronic to rock. Some of my favourite tracks/albams for testing and show off are as follow. Recently discovered, Lilly Moore all her EPs so far hunter as a horse, the passenger Dermot Kennedy all his stuff Jeff Beck loud hailer, track 3 is a real fav Lucy Rose, work it out great vocals The Internet death ego Two feet, A 20 something f*@K Nothing but thieves, not made by design stand out track not made by design. If it puts the hair on the back of your neck up through the middle of the track you know you have a good system. Death from Above 1979, out rage is now, a little compressed but a right hoot. but will show of your systems speed and attack play loud!!! Natasha blume, all her EPs (not available on all streaming services) Welles red trees and white trash whole album is good but the stand for me is "Seventeen" Sigrid, everybody knows, just league album (and a lot of her other stuff is great also) The weeknd, my dear melancholy, call out my name. filthy month but great vocalist especially this track Bassette, bermuda For testing/showing off bass DJ shadow, Three Ralphs doesn't really get any deeper than that TBH Henry green slow, the has some amazing bass that if you system is setup right and i mean bang with land right behind you not just in front. Great spacial effects FK twigs The prodigy fat of the land, mindfields still haze, Down in the vespa A long list sorry! but well you know, i like too listen to it all and all i deem to be pretty well recorded, It's also slightly different list to what would normally be thrown around in most circles and there's something there for everybody (apart from classical, i find it had to find well recorded classical). So have fun, enjoy and hopefully you'll something new.
