The last time I moved, all of my tools and supplies were unavailable to me for a long time. I found a pair of HIP's for cheap and couldn't wait to recap them. All I could do was borrow a soldering iron and a pair of finger nail clippers for wire cutters and a really dull pair of wire strippers. I ordred the caps from Bob.

Didn't even have a work bench or table to work on. Just the livingroom floor.

Here's the result.....the mess that it is......but it works.

If you follow Bob's directions, you should have no trouble replacing the diaphragms. They will made a bigger sound improvement than the crossovers. I've been happy with my titanium diaphragms. Don't let the initial increase in brightness discourage you, they settle in after several hours and you will be rewarded with a bigger soundstage, crisper highs, and a cleaner midrange.

Thanks.  I took one apart yesterday and thought "that's it?"  Can't wait.

  3. Okay, back on topic.  While I have to remove the tweeters and mids to remove the crossovers, I might as well change out the tweeter diaphragms.  Has anyone done this and how easy is it even for a klutz like me?  The instruction I received from Crites seem pretty straightforward.  Thanks.

Yep, internal audit manager/director for the last 25 years of my career. 33 countries, 5 continents.  I'm to the point in my life where I'm comfortable letting the pros do it.  I still cut my own grass and take care of my vehicles, though. A friend of mine is a retired electrical engineer.  His retirement job is repairing guitar amplifiers for local musicians.  I could probably get him to teach me how to solder.

BTW, during those 25 years I did work in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia.  I was in Edmonton on 9/11/01. Freaked my kids out.  They were all calling and asking "where's daddy?"

We can all recap the crossovers.  But Bob actually tests them afterwords and makes sure they are a matched pair and spot on.  That's what is worth the money.  You want matched pairs of drivers and crossovers.

Thank you.  Hadn't thought of it that way.

    @AuditMan a couple of points;

    1) You can learn to solder and do the DIY thing.  I've learned (I'm 65 so it ain't no age thing!), mostly by becoming interested due to this forum and watching YouTube.  Now, I'm not saying my soldering is as nice as @Deang and other pros, but it's semi-ept functionally.  Why learn?  Because you can then control what you put into your systems, and have fun!  My only regret is that I didn't start sooner.

    2) By your moniker and story of being away for weeks, I take that you are retired auditor.  Likewise.  Control + Accountability = DIY.  Go for it!  Mr. Crites will provide excellent service and results though, and better soldering than me.  Yes, I was away for weeks at a time too, dang hydrocarbon measurement auditing all over Canada and major projects audits in US.

If they take you out they'll most definitely see you out!  I know this because momma likes to watch "who-done-it" shows (I accuse her of shopping for ideas - but only in jest - nearly 12 years together and the closest we've come to even arguing was the time I rearranged the living room while she was gone [it stayed that way!]).  One thing I've learned is that while it's a crime to lie to the cops while they're investigating, they do it as a matter of course!  How's that right???

A close friend's Mom used to say, when she bought something in her later years, "Well, this one will take me out."  So, it's sort of a thing in our group of friends.  Great story about the furniture.  I used to travel a lot for work.  I'd be gone for weeks at a time.  My wife was constantly moving things around.  I'd come home and trip over stuff in the dark.

  8. Let me clarify my question. I know I could do the rebuild cheaper if I did it myself.  It's like calling a plumber, I could do it myself but I'd probably screw it up and end up with crossovers that I'd have to replace.  What I'm asking is - will doing the rebuilds make the speakers sound better? I know it's subject to a lot of variables.  I'm asking for people who may have done this to give me their opinions.  Thanks

  9. This is from their website.

That rebuild would include replacing the capacitors with high quality Sonicaps, or other high quality Polypropylene capacitors.  That would include all the caps that are in the signal path.  For the crossovers that have woofer roll off caps, we use non-polarized electrolytics for that woofer roll off.  After the rebuild, we test the rebuilt crossovers on a spectrum analyzer to insure that the crossover is back in factory spec.

Im with you, I really didn't like much from Gilmour  (what he wrote) tell After Waters left. The two Albums they did without Waters Are really good albums that I like a lot. Signs of life/Learning to fly is one of the great pink floyd songs imo. Is it as good as the best floyd stuff NO... But He really imo did a heck of a job moving into that role that he hadn't been in sense the late 60 early 70s.

Don't get me wrong im not forgetting about the amazing solos he wrote and played on the great floyd stuff. I would have never pitted a VS with anyone against Roger Waters If they weren't imo Epic Legendary level (as in arguably the greatest).

And as a amateur guitarist as well (I realize your post was piggy backing/responding from some of what I posted). His Guitar work is universe creation level EPIC. I cant even begin to rap my head around how good he really is in his solo creations.

But Waters was the MAN! Dude was just the ....man! His work transcended music into something beyond everyone else's 2ch stereo good time music. It became a living liquid creation.

Obviously this is very very bias opinion.

I think they fed off each other (in a good way).  Waters wrote the music and Gilmore did more than fill in the guitar parts, he made the songs what they are.  Without Waters there would have been no vehicle for Gilmore.  BUT, without Gilmore, the vehicles would have been less full.  Critics have bashed the post-Waters Floyd work and I can't see why.  Both albums are IMO better than the Final Cut, which to me sounded more like outtakes from other albums.  I read that one critic actually said and I'm NOT quoting, the songs on the two post-Waters albums were nothing more than a few lyrics so David could do solos.  Well, duh, isn't that what rock music is?  Okay, I know it is more than that but still...

He's building a '32 Ford, from the ground up. A company in Ohio has the original dies for the body parts. They machined everything so they can make new parts that will fit perfectly on an original frame, and fit more perfectly that the original parts did.

He has about $100k into in parts so far, and it has been a seven year project since he was doing it for himself. It does have a Chevy engine in it though... the resale value is higher than if it has a Ford engine in it.

This is another one of his cars.  I have pics of more of his cars but I have to fiddle with the format to decrease size.  He's in his 80's and still building them in his shop in his back yard..This is about 15 years or so ago.

  12. Marvel and glens,  Thanks for your advice.  Although, the frequency response does not appear to be hindered in any way, in fact, it appears to have been enhanced.  They sound better than they did in the study and much better than they did from where I bought them.  Where I bought them, the guy had them on the floor.  I just listened to Jackson Browne's "The Fuse" and it sounded flawless.  The drummers high-hat was a clear as could be.  Clearer than with any speakers I've ever owned, and there have been a few.  Glens, I did shoot down further cabinet work,  but once I showed an example from Pinterest to my wife, I had buy-in.  Well, excuse me, I have music to listen to.  Thanks again.

  13. I acquired last week a pair of Heresy II's manufactured in 1986.  I've read that an upgrade would be to change out the capacitors. Does anyone know if this model year has the old "oil can" capacitors?  If so, and I should replace them, how do I get to them as the back of the speakers are sealed?  It seems the easiest route would be to go through the woofer hole.  If so, how do I remove the woofer?  Any help is appreciated.
