  1. If the center channel is the same as my X-202, you run an interconnect from the Fisher to a mono amp, that amp feeds the speaker. I tried it for a while and did not care for it. Brett Cornwell
  2. Craig, A guy on Audiogon has a set of 4 Mk 3's he wants $1695 for. Have you looked at those? What would be a reasonable price? If they can be had for a decent price, I'd split them with someone. He's at 30 days on the auction and might be ready to deal. There is another set that needs switched back to tube rectification for $550. Brett Cornwell
  3. I've been searching for a tuner that can do a great job with a jazz station 80 miles out. I have a Radio Shack roof antenna aimed the right way. The signal from this station tends to get very noisy at times so quieting is very important. Recent results Accuphase T-100 Stock, great sound, not that quiet, even with MPX filter and high mute engaged. Kenwood KT-8300 Stock, sound very nearly as good as the Acccuphase, quieter. This is my favorite analog so far, I may go for the APS rebuild package on this one. Pioneer TX-9500II Stock, good sound not on the level of the previous tuners, fairly quiet but not the best. Kenwood KT-7500 Modded by APS, pretty quiet, decent sound, I think I sold this to mdeneen. Sansui TU-717 Very nice sound and pretty quiet, another modification candidate. I do want to mention a couple of digitals. I have a Sumo Charlie that sounds wonderful, is very quiet, but not very sensitive. It will kick out all together when signal drops but does not get noisy. Finally, the surprise of my search, a Yamaha TX-540. I bought it by accident thinking it was a TX-950. Very, very sensitive, dead quiet and pretty good sound. Somehow it does all that without even having a coax antenna connector. I'm floored everytime I hook it up. Think I'll get another and send it off for mods. Highly recommended. Brett Cornwell
  4. My favorite Diana Krall is "When I Look in Your Eyes." I'd also like to add Carol Sloane to the "worth a listen" list. Brett Cornwell
  5. Craig, I tried the experiment, one notch up on treble, one down on base. I did not notice much difference. Went two notches each way and it seemed to flatten out the mids and highs without adding anything, think I'll leave the tone controls on neutral, but thanks for the idea. Brett
  6. My rebuilt Fisher X-202 came back from Craig a week ago. I put it in my main system, replacing an HF-81. The sound is wonderful through my Fortes. The Fisher has a lot more bass and punch than the Eico with almost as much resolution. LP's are really sweet with two Amperex Bugle Boys in the phono preamp. This is the third vintage amp I've had rebuilt. The Eico and a Fisher 400 receiver are the others. In each case what I thought was a good amp turned into a great amp with new parts. I encourage anyone with a stock 1950's or 60's tube amp to go for a rebuild, you have a treat in store. Thanks to Craig for the great work and for his patience with the electronically challenged. Brett Cornwell
  7. I've used an Eico HF81 and a Fisher 400 receiver with original Fortes and like the Fisher best. You can get a decent original 400 on Ebay for under $200. Another $200 in upgrades will give you an integrated amp with a tube tuner built in. Plug your CD in the AUX inputs and away you go.
  8. I have an X-202, it uses 7189 outputs, I think the 202B uses 7591's. My X-202 needs some work, Craig, are you up for it? Brett
  9. I have a Fisher X-202. Using the center channel requires the addition of a mono amplifier. The X-202 is a great amp, uses 7189 outputs. I think the 202B is 7591's.
  10. I'm retubing an Eico HF-81 and am researching 12AX7's. There is an interesting, lengthy, 12AX7 review in "Joe's Tube Lore" on Audioasylum. The author concludes that almost all 12AX7's "suck" (his word, not mine) and that many 5751's, like the RCA's mentioned earlier, are superior audio tubes. I have a Fisher 800C, a 400 and an X202 that are loaded with Telefunkens. I think they are wonderful but I may give the 5751's a shot in the Eico. Brett
  11. He said the "first $300" gets them. I figure that means the first person standing at the door with $300 cash in hand. Brett
  12. If you want a faster deal, I'll come pick them up this evening. I'm 50 miles North in Bowling Green. Let me know. Brett
  13. I have a Fisher 400 and a Fisher X-202. I love them both. Recently, I got a Decware Zen 84C amp. It produces about 4 watts using a 6DJ8 driver and two Svetlana SV83 output tubes. It is amazing. It creates a whole new level of audio experience. It needs efficient speakers. When I got it I had Kg-4's, I upgraded to Fortes just to maximize the amp. New, the 84C is $500 from the Decware website. There are used ones on Audiogon at $350 or so. You can retube one with stock tubes for $20 or go off the deep end, like I have, with every known permutation of 6DJ8 tube for different colorations. It's the best audio money I've ever spent. The Fishers are wonderful collectors items. The Zen is wonderful audio.
