  1. These are original Forte 1s with the exception of the risers which have been painted textured black satin They are in excellent condition with none of the usual active or passive woofer push in damage. As far as I can tell, no modifications have ever been made to them except the riser painting. Since they are probably 80s vintage (tags on back are hard to read). I have no boxes and really really don't want to ship. Located just north of Boston near Portsmouth, NH Pricing: $945
  2. Somebody got a great buy. I redid a set of BG-4s and the materials cost me $200+. Well done!
  3. Thanks everyone for the discussion. Sounds like I'll need to put some miles in to listen to the newer lines. Just to explain why I'm interested in size.... I basically have three systems and swap speakers/amps/etc. to chase the impact of different combinations and tune the room. It's one of my things, the experimenting side of this hobby. Hence my interest in mobility. BTW, I've thought about Klipsch "pro" boxes but not for now. The non-Klipsch gear I have is pretty light - small Maggies, Thiels, SVS subs &, of course, the RP600Ms. Except for my big Bryston amp, everything is very mobile...well except for my vinyl collection but they can move one at a time. :8) BTW, I do have a pair of upgraded BG4s that are on casters (for sale soon) but their sound is quite up to Forte boldness. So I'm both tuning the room and chasing the noise I l9ke. Until I have time to find and visit a dealer (recommendations anyone?) in the NH coastal area, I plan to double down on tuning the room and perhaps the RP600s digitally. Just got a miniSDP SHD with Dirac SW and it did calm their famous 2k peak. Maybe tuning them in conjunction with the subs will add some sauce to the soup. Thanks again all. Dan
  4. Thanks! I'll see if I can find a dealer and check them out.
  5. I had a lovely pair of Forte 1s that I sold because they were too big for my room and my back. I miss them. They were modified with Crites components, they replaced a set of KG-4s that were similarly upgraded. I originally got on the Klipsch train because I wanted to try SET amplification. Now I have a Decware SE84UFO which I love. So, is there anything you wizards would recommend in the current Reference line that could give me a taste of the Fortes without the Heritage tonnage? Don't want to start a religious war over original vs new. However, some of you guys really know the Klipsch product lines and there's not many places up here (NH) to go listen. Thank in advance! Dan P.S. I do have a pair of rescued RP-600Ms, unmodified, but they are kinda anemic compared to the Fortes and not all that efficient.
  6. I wish I'd paid attention to all your comments. Might have saved me some discussion with the buyer! They sold locally and quickly. Sorry I didn't remember to come back an edit the post. I do miss them.
  7. Yep, that's what the buyer said to me. The Fortes I sold had the Crits upgrades and I do miss their full, rich sound.
  8. These were pulled from a gorgeous pair of Forte I that I sold. The speakers sounded absolutely wonderful but were way too big for my room and back. So I'm living with a pair of KG-4 and rp-600m but missing them. Anyway, the buyer said they weren't original so I gave him back some cash and he bought replacements and gave them back to me. They sounded great and look fine except for the backs of the magnets which are scraped. I'd like $125 for both - you cover shipping (6.5# each) from 03862. Weigh about 8.5# each so figure that in your shipping cost (I'm zip 03862).
  9. I have no idea if they are k-28s. How would I find that out?
  10. Second owner. I purchased them from the original owner in early 2021. They had been in his climate controlled warehouse for some time. He documented the serial number on one (#8656832 - the tag was loose) and that they were bought together. The tag(s) are gone to tag heaven. Crites titanium tweeter diaphragms were installled. Originals will be included. The Crites cross overs for that time (2013) were also installed. Bobby Crites (RIP) personally did not recommend the midrange diaphragms at the time and told the original ower that. Walnut finish which was just reoiled (see photos). Cabinets and dust cover fabrics in excellent shape. Some abrasion on passive radiator dust caps but no harm no foul. Sound great but I have three sets of Klipsch speakers and these are just too much for my tiny listening space. These are currently set up and I'd be happy to demo - N. Hampton, NH (03862). I've run these with a 2 watt Decware tube amp and a 400 watt Bryston 4B SST. Both sounded great. If you want them shipped, you will need to manage that because it's above my pay grade. I have them listed at $1350 on FB, CL and USAUDIOMART. Will put them on eB*y eventually...yuck. Since there's a size limit on what I can post (one setup and one when I was oiling them), here's a link to reasonably large images: https://www.danderby.com/forte I'm email@danderby.com if you want to contact me directly. Thanks, Dan

  12. If anyone notices, one cabinet has a black space where the one original QA label left was. I carefully left it on (covered) when refinishing and then it disappeared. If anyone interested in the speakers would like that section painted over to match the rest of the back, I can do that.
  13. Agree! I love them but the Fortes are a smidgen more complete, sound wise. I enjoy updating them (and the RP-600Ms) to something of this century. My wife's an interior designer, so the ole styles are too large and too ugly. Getting the RP-600Ms into the living room was a life changer. :8)
  14. Not sure if these are better but the link above (https://www.danderby.com/p390908888) is all I have on line at the moment. Be happy to shoot more in a couple days. Maybe something really close?
  15. Thanks. Under water here so hope to update pricing over the weekend. FYI, these were replaced by Fortes. Also did a refurb on a set of RP-600Ms that someone had beaten with a chain. Wife actually let me put them in living room!
  16. Thanks for asking! Sorry for the delay, been over subscribe here! I just listed it on Audiomart for 755. Not really sure if that's low or high. :8) Dan
  17. Klipsch KG-4 Tweeters (K-74-K) upgraded with titanium diaphragms from Crits Speakers. Cross-overs upgraded with new caps and polyswitches, also from Crits. Cabinets were totally refinished with multiple coast of textured paint & then finished with matte top coat. Base platforms refinished in satin black. Interior foam replaced with new foam (old foam can be included). Fabric on speaker grills (magnetic attached) is like new. Rear passive radiators dust covers have (typical) dimples. No audio impact. They sound exquisite - driven by a good system. Can be shipped at cost (FedEx boxing and shipping). Likely take two boxes. LIkely to be expensive. Currently located at New Hampshire seacoast area (north of Boston). Set of detailed pictures at: https://www.danderby.com/p390908888 Would be happy to send link to restoration photos. Message me.
  18. Love the part about "all those you care about"...😄
  19. Interesting that you should ask, I'm just now trying to establish that. At first blush, the LS50s take more power (i.e. play louder) to open up. Played quietly, they are pretty lacking, particularly in things like detail and sound stage. On the other hand, the KG4s play really precisely and with lots of detail quietly. A real advantage for us since I'm a stay up late guy and my wife is not. OTOH, my (again early) impression is that the LS50s have a richer mid range and really complement well done smooth studio recordings. The KG4s, however, are really marvelous for live stuff. Lots of snap and slap...a real sense of being there. I"m running a Bryston 4B SST for amplification - 400 wpc into 4 ohms. Just got a new preamp that can run tubes or solid state so lots experimenting to do.
  20. Paint still drying but I'm much pleased with the exterior refinish on these. Original veneer was cracking off and kinda ugly even though it look ok in a photo. This is a pebble grain gun metal like color. Turns out that, completely by accident, the front panel color I picked almost exactly matches the drivers. Debating about leaving the grills off normally but the speakers are a bit overwhelming in my zen like listening room. Was surprised to discover that they sounded much better closer to the wall than I've typically kept my LS50s. In any case, I have a question for anyone: While I love the crispness of their sound and great presence on live performances but the lower mid-range these seems a bit thin. Can that be adjusted with mods? i.e. changes in cross over, more interior padding, weights on rear passive, anything? I have a sub (SVS SB1000) so the bottom end works fine. Thanks, Dan
  21. Put one on each side. Should be slightly longer than the height?
  22. That's really inspiring! My room's a bit smaller but those LSs would probably fit fine. What amp is that? Experimenting with flea power tubes was one of the itches that set me on this Klipsch path.
  23. Well, I've started the hot rod phase. Damn, these things come apart so logically. I can recognize most of the parts. :😎
  24. billybob Thanks for the offer. I'm on the New Hampshire coast about 45 minutes from Boston. Funny, i was going to start refinishing the KG 4s this weekend but that's not gonna happen. I've discovered they play really nice quietly. Opens up all sort of opportunities after dinner. Feel like I'm being happily sucked into a new listening dimension. Really looking forward to driving with tube pre, which should arrive any day now. Going forward my challenge is to find a way to listen to the other vintage models that have been recommended. Dan
  25. Thanks everyone! Really helpful perspectives. Would this be a good summary of the food chain starting with my KG 4s - in terms of you've suggested? KG 4 => Heresy => Quartet => Forte => Chorus => Cornwall => La Scala ???? My listening room is 13x21x7.5 but the listening position is constrained to 12' from front wall by a trivial need to hold up the floor above (i.e. load bearing beam). Walls are hand laid field stones, very irregular and ceiling is open beams with sprayed on insulation. I did some surfing last night and there seems to be support for the Quartet/Forte/Chorus area most of you recommended. They also have a form factor that appeals to me. Given that I live in New Hampshire, there's not a lot of opportunity to test drive models and I don't like to "kick tires" for the ones on sell & waste peoples' time. So for now, my plan would be: - LIve with my KG4s for my tube experiment and mess with them upgrading/restoring/hot rodding (love that kinda thing). They were cheaper than most of my interconnects. - Keep an eye out for the Quartet/Forte/Chorus types as I go. Suspect any of them will be a great next step. Making this jump would depend on how liveable the KG4s turn out to be and what kind of buy I can get. Beat up cabinets with solid drivers and cross overs would be perfect for me. I'd like to stay in the legacy area and not consider new ones . . . it's part of the charm and bragging rights. - Find some way hear La Scalas so I completely mess up my audio aspirations. Again, thanks for your insights! Dan
