Had an acquaintance come by who is also a hobbyist. He desperately wanted to hear these. We listened to blues and jazz (at his request) and for jazz these things are wild. Gene Ammon’s “Hittin’ The Jug pulled that saxophone out into the room! But in our listening it occurred to me what it was that was breaking my head: the tweeter isn’t anywhere near as forward and in the mix between the 3 drivers, the mid reigns over all. Maybe it’s me being used to Focal’s assertive tweeter sound or maybe my expectation was that they ride an edge of brightness. Maybe it’s my system but the top end of relaxed but letting the mids run the show. The mids are forward for sure. I ordered some jumpers and will play around with raising them up to ear level.

I’ll give that a try. The mid bass region is so full with these. Gives everything a very full sound. i haven’t owned a 3 way in like 25+ years and owning “tweeter assertive” Focals the last 6 years have me looped as things don’t sound familiar. It’s a journey and and I’m not complaining.

Right. I read those weeks ago (I’m also a member there) so I’m aware. Like I said, it’s something I knew I would have to contend with. At any rate, my kiddo left for the day so it will be an all vinyl Saturday. I’ll put them through some exercises today for sure.

Yes I have a set of 12db that I was using. As stated in last night’s post, they left the background mostly silent but gave up some dynamics and some of the forward ness. I’m debating a 6db pair. I know it’s not a big deal, and I knew this might be something to contend with when I switched gears and went with high sensitivity speakers. So not complaining. thank you though 👍🏼

I’m running a Quicksilver Line Stage Preamp with 1980’s RCA black plates. My amp is high gain and I’m going to reach out to the builder to see if I can send it back and have him drop the input gain. Quicksilver Mid Monos would be great but there won’t be anymore major audio purchases this year. Plus the system does double duty as a 2 channel system for tv/movies so I’ve pretty much ruled out tubes for now as they’d be on 8 hours a day. later today I may play around with aiming and raising them upward more and see what happens.

I will try that. Your summation basically lines up with Z Reviews thoughts in that he took the bases off and put them on stands to get the mid at ear level. In a couple weeks I’ll try raising them up and see what mayhem ensues. One issue I am having, which I had a feeling I’d run into is noise floor. Tube hiss definitely audible At listening position. Not the speaker’s fault obviously. I was running 12db attenuators between preamp and amp with the Focals (92db) and so I’m pondering grabbing 6db and trying those to lower the noise (hopefully) without killing dynamics. Anyway, they played all night long (low volume) so they’ve got about 14 hours on them so far.

Heresys arrived this afternoon. Got home and unboxed And slid them into place with no toe and 10” from the top rear edge to the wall. Since then they’ve been moved a few times. More toe and now 15” from the inside rear corner to the wall - outside rear corner at 18”. Much better. Still playing with it as I run them in. Initial thoughts were that they weren’t as forward as I was expecting. But then I remembered the attenuators I had in line so I removed those. More dynamic now and a little more forward. More refined that expected. I was expecting something more pissed off I guess? Anyway, they sound good. Surprising bass. My sub has been off since this morning in anticipation and these do throw some bass. I started with some well recorded stuff: Dead Can Dance, Miles Davis, Chris Connelly, etc. Borrowed my daughter’s copy of the Gaga/Bennett duets and that was pretty amazing. Getting late here so I’m spinning some not well recorded reggae and it sounds as it should: rough where it’s rough and smooth where it’s smooth. I’m going to shuffle Apple Music all night to keep the drivers fluxing and tomorrow they will be subject to Trepaneringsritualen, Napalm Death, Cthonica (newest obsession) and whatever else I can throw at them. Blown away? No. Very good? Yes. In a few weeks I’ll rotate the Focals back in and see whats what.

The Final Cut. I’ve lived it for the most part.

Im hoping Darko gets a shot at these. He likes the Forte III which he bought. Unlike Andrew the haircut he preferred the L100 to the Forte. As Darko and I listen to most of the same music and share equal distaste for audiophile music I’d be curious to know his thoughts.

My issue is bass coming up from the floor to my upstairs neighbors. Not the room I sit in.

Another thought before I finally give up: I can place tube traps to the left of the left speaker but what about a hanging bass trap over each speaker? Or maybe a “superchunk” bass trap on top of each speaker to absorb bass headed through the ceiling?

No doubt (hence looking at Cornwalls) but also not blasting my upstairs neighbors into orbit is good too. I feel like I would have to handicap the speaker to work for me in my current place and I could be here another 8 years. Who knows.

As I’ve been living here 8 years (Wednesday) and could be here for many more to come I feel like Cornwall is a bad choice. I’d be, in essence, handicapping the speaker for what could be 10 more years. so I think I’ll stick with Heresy IV and then upgrade my sub to something better. This will allow me to then upgrade the final major piece and arrive at a destination. I’d much rather buy records then hardware.

After spending all morning looking at the Loki and viewing graphs for FR at SBAF it seems like it’s not going to work. I guess I thought it had the ability to adjust the Q and it doesn’t and the FR for any of the bands seems to be too broad to shelve off frequencies at and below 50-60HZ. So I less there’s another way (maybe a capacitor between speaker wire and terminal?) I might have to concede failure on this idea.

It’s an idea I’m kicking around. Part of me thinks it’s brilliant and part of me thinks to just go H4’s and upgrade my sub so I can move on to replacing my phono-stage (the final piece of the puzzle). Then let the future happen and figure out where to go from there.

I feel like this: would eliminate ALL my neighbors. Forever. But alas, not a classy move. Obviously I have time until ill be able to make a decision. I do have the money for Heresy IV’s now but due to all the uncertainty I’m waiting. Adulting sucks sometimes. I was going to add that I also was considering adding a Schiit Loki between the pre and power amp to roll off the lows. The sub I’m running is fed directly from the pre so it would still do its thing. Seems like kind of a waste but then when I can move to someplace without vertical neighbors I can let them loose.

So not to beat a sleeping horse, but I have another concern should I go Cornwall: my upstairs neighbor (who is an a$$h*le) and cares not how they blow me out with bass. But since I’m taking the high road, it seems to me that my current speakers (-6db at 50hz) aren’t going to rattle anything but up near my ceiling bass does pool up. With a 15” driver and response down in the 30’s there’s going to be exponentially more bass pooling up there. Yes? what then?

Which makes total sense. I weirdly forget about the Fortes. Definitely along with @USRNET there’s much Forte love. I’ll look deeper into it. All I have is time right now.

Was more or less curious. It’s funny as I have yet to even consider the Forte III. I think the reason is that they’ve been out a while and by all accounts the Heresy and Cornwall’s newest incarnations are very much a step up. If the Forte IV was coming I’d probably look into that. I have been reading the reviews though and even GR Research has nice things to say even though they offer an upgrade kit for it. Again, its not that I want to spend tons of money I just don’t want to regret not aiming higher. Heresys fit the room, would go plenty loud enough (I typically listen around 85db when I can, otherwise 70ish) snd allow me to run a sub near the listening seat. By all accounts will work well for me. A big step up from my current speakers and on budget. Winning all around. Add the sexy black finish with the silvery/grey grills and yeah, IM GETTING EXCITED.

In an unrelated note, I had to measure my living area but I realized my dims in the original post are incorrect. The short wall is 165” (over 13’) vs the 11’ I originally spec’d. And with this, my stand mounts are 13” (from rear of cabinet) from the front wall and the tweeters are 122” from my ears. The tweeters are 102” driver to driver. The left speaker is closest to a corner at 39” from box to wall. The right speaker has the least amount of sideways room due to my turntable being there at 47”. I could conceivably move the little table it’s on but no idea where. The TV bench the audio equipment sits on is 72” wide and 22” deep. Not sure if that makes any difference.

Absolutely. And my biggest thing is not to sit and listen all the while wondering if I should have waited and gone further up line. I want to have no regrets. as asked earlier, I don’t know why I don’t consider the Forte III. It too gets much praise. I think I read somewhere that it’s overall sound is a little different than the Heresy and Cornwall. I don’t know where I got that from and maybe it’s BS. But as with the Cornwall, I worry about that radiator crushing the neighbor on the other side of the wall. Some of the music I spin has relentless bass (Nordvagr, Scorn).
