  1. I don't know what Klipsch does at the factory. However, usually some sort of product is used before the lacquer is applied. This brings out the character of the wood. For example, I used teak oil on the guitar before I applied a poly to seal it. You can play around on the bottom of the speakers and try different options and see what you like the most. I would go with what you like rather than what the original finish was. I think the finish on a lot of the oak speakers from that era is very dated.
  2. I like Matte finishes...it looks more natural. Wood is not supposed to be shiny in my world.
  3. My 2 cents: Sand them carefully. Sanding is the only way to get the water damage out on the top of the one speaker along with the several additional scratches. I use a decent orbital sander with light pressure. You don't need to do much, and be careful when you get near the edges, as you don't want to burn through the veneer. Perhaps start with 220 paper and finish with something in the upper 300's or 400. Then you can seal with whatever you like. I just did a Mahogany guitar and used teak oil and it looks beautiful. I have to run out the door to get to work.... these kids won't teach themselves! More on this later.
  4. Added some bracing with some scraps...
  5. Well, I didn't really want to do another 4.2 restoration, but one set became available locally with a blown tweeter and the guy just wanted to get rid of it. (He swears that once I replaced the tweeter it would be worth $400! hahaha, I guess he's getting his pricing off of eBay!) I'm a teacher and it's my spring break, so I thought I would try to breathe some new life into this one! The guy said it was in really nice condition. I'm really starting to see a huge gap between what I think is good condition and what the rest of society thinks is good condition. These were average at best with a lot of dings and scratches to the cabinets, including the corners, along with the famous water ring on the top of one of them. After I purchased them, I knew these weren't going to be showroom condition, but I figured I'll try and do them some justice. Today I sanded the cabinets. The veneer is no where near matching, so there goes the plan of staining them like I have done in the past. So, these will be a paint finish...boo! I also rounded the front edges and added some bracing with scrap wood I had. The tweeter diaphragm is on the way and should be here soon. I have to grab some paint the next time I'm out near a home depot.
  6. My brother is close to Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri. I can send them down with him if you want to pick them up from there. I know that would still be a long drive, but just throwing it out there.
  7. I'm glad it worked out for you! Ah... the good old Rane ME15. That's what I used as an EQ back in the 90's in my college days. It too was paired with Crowns, however, of a different nature; two Macrotech 2400's!
  8. Sold and Shipped to megalotz! Enjoy!
  9. No worries. I didn't end up buying them. I was messaging the guy and his last response was at 9:52 last night. Then at 10:15p.m. I said I'd buy them. No response until 7:00a.m telling me someone paid and picked them up. Seems fishy to me. Maybe I dodged a bullet on this one....the caulk, the broken English in the messages, etc. If another member bought these, I would like to know if they were in decent working condition.
  10. Thanks for the input. If I do end up picking these up, it will also be my motivation for finishing my kp-250II restoration!
  11. I have an opportunity to pick these up for $295. When I asked if the white stuff around all of the drivers was caulk, they said the original owner caulked them to seal it better. (seems odd to me, but okay!) There is some staining on the woofers.... I cant see them well enough to verify if they are actual OEM drivers... I would open them up before I hand over the cash. The cabinets need refinishing, and that's why I would be buying them. Do you think they are worth the asking price in this condition? Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!
  12. Weekend bump for this little guy!
  13. I will include a nice bottle of bourbon to go as well!
  14. Excellent condition. Both drivers are in perfect shape. The grill is clean and in egood shape with no rips or snags. This is only one speaker, however, there is another forum member selling two for $100+ shipping, so you might end up getting three for a good price. Asking $30 + shipping (Cheaper than the replacement woofer alone if you have one that is damaged. The woofer is the K-1138-OV 5.25") Location 60511 for local pickup Shipping: Actual cost of shipping plus packaging
  15. Sorry, local pick up only unless you want to arrange shipping were someone comes to my door, hands me cash and then takes the speakers.
  16. Hello all, Excellent condition! Adult owned and listened to in a pet and smoke free environment. All drivers are in perfect condition and function correctly. Speaker grills are in perfect condition with no rips, snags, etc. Cabinets are in excellent condition and show much less signs of use than typical speakers of this age. Audition at time of purchase to verify that everything functions perfectly. I am an audio enthusiast and I don't sell anything that I wouldn't feel comfortable buying again myself. (I also have the matching center channel of interested.) I didn't want to part with these, as I prefer the high end over my RF-7II's, but I'm, not a fan of the piano black...so, I'm keeping my RF-7II's and these are up for your consideration. Audition may include some tasty bourbons if you're interested! If you're interested in the matching center channel we can talk about a package deal.
