  1. Well, just when I thought my problem was too complicated and unsolvable, my klipsch system went ahead and corrected itself without warning. Now all my speakers work 100%. Kinda weird if you ask me! Mitch
  2. I've had my v.2-400's for 4 years, and this is the first problem I've had with them... Yesterday I noticed my front right speaker was almost completely out (by putting my ear up to the speaker at loud volume, I could faintly hear music.) So I swapped my front right and rear right speakers to see if it was the actual speaker that was damaged...nope, it seemed that whichever speaker was plugged into the front right position would only play very low volumes. Ok, well could it be the wire? I took the wire that I normally use for my front RIGHT speaker and swapped it on the back of the amp to the front LEFT channel. In turn I switched the original front LEFT wire to the front RIGHT channel. After that fact, I noticed that it was now the speaker in the front LEFT position (plugged into the front right channel) that was having the problem. Ok, so its not the speaker thats damaged, and its not the wire thats damaged. Whatever I plug into the front RIGHT channel on the back of the amp has problems. What does this mean? I have tried wiggling the wires to make sure the connection is solid...to no avail. Can the connection on the back of the amp go bad all of the sudden? What should I do?? Confused klipsch owner, Mitch
  3. Hehe, I just got an email "someone has replied to your topic" This was ages ago! Oh well, in conclusion, it turns out that the controller card I had did not like my motherboard one bit, so I just said screw it. I never use the zip anyways because my burner can do the job much better. I would also like to add that I am STILL using the same set of v2-400 speakers I bought back in '99, and they still ROCK! Screw diamonds...a speaker means forever. Take it easy guys. -Mitch

    RAM question...

So yeah, I am thinking of upgrading my mobo. I am looking at the ABIT kg7-raid. It's a great board, with 4 dimm slots, but its only flaw is that if you wish to use all 4 dimm slots, you must purchase 'registered' ram, vs unbuffered. Does anyone know how much of a difference there is between registered and unbuffered, in terms of speed, reliability, etc?
  5. Do you have another video card lying around that you could pop in? That would be the easiest way to troubleshoot in my opinion. If that turns out ok, and you had another sound card lying around, you could pop that in. I have no experience with PowerDVD 4.0. I am running 3.0 and it works fine. Good luck.
  6. I am specifically looking at the Canon Powershot s300...the cheapest I can find it right now is around $375. It sounds like the microdrive would be a good option, I just haven't researched enough to know which camera's accept it. I may just end up going with 128 megs of brand name memory, whether it be Crucial or Kingston. If there are any other digital cameras in that price range that you think I should consider, please let me know. Thanks for the help guys.
  7. I am thinking about buying a digital camera, and the one I am looking at accepts Compact Flash Type I memory. I have always gone with Crucial Technologies (division of Micron) when buying ram for my computer, and was wondering if this would be a good place to get Compact Flash memory as well. Any good brand names out there that I should consider for this camera?
  8. Ok, I understand now. I had been told previously that the KSW line of subs was not self-powered.
  9. I am a bit confused about getting enough power to the sub in a general home audio system. Let me use the quintet microsystem to explore my question. The satellites can handle 100 watts each, while the sub handles 225. Well...lets say I go out and buy a quality home theater reciever, say 100 watts x 5. Well, this wattage would match up with the sattelites perfectly, but it seems to me that the sub could not display its full potential with only 100 watts. In a scenario like this, do you buy a separate amp for your sub...or are there recievers out there that are 100 watts x 4, plus 225 x 1?
  10. Yeah, I understand that I may only need a 2 speaker setup for strictly music purposes, but I would like to have a surround feel to the room. Lets just say I go with 2 pair of SB-1's. What would be the best way to mount these in ceiling corners?
  11. I am looking to install a hi-fi speaker system in my living room. I wouldn't go anywhere but klipsch for this solution, so I am currently looking at the Quintets, and the system 6...and possibly even the promdia 5.1's. I am not looking for a system to fit with a home entertainment system. I have no TV, dvd player, etc. Just a nice cd player. From what I have heard, the system 6 is most likely what I need to fill a living room properly with abundant sound. But I am curious about the speakers in the system 6. There seems to be speakers designated for fronts, and rears. Well, I don't need these, because I won't be watching movies. I simply want equal sound from all speakers. If I had the system 6 divided into the 4 ceiling corners of the room, would the "rear" speakers sound different than the "front" speakers while simply playing a cd? The rears seemed to have a different shape, vs the quintets which appear identical. Also, in the specifications of this website, it lists, under the sub, AMPLIFIER: Class A/B discrete MOSFET outputs AMPLIFIER POWER: 225 watts dynamic power for both the quintets and the system 6. Does this imply that there is a built in amplifier on the sub for these systems? If not, I would need to purchase a reviever, where as with the promedia 5.1's, there is already a nice, 500 watt rms amp. So I am stuck between these 3 systems. Help is greatfully appreciated.
  12. Sounds good. I have looked at that Antec 400W...I am also looking at a Sparkle 400W. Which do you think I should choose?
  13. Well, do you really think I need that many watts? 431 is pretty high, especially 650.
  14. I was thinking about upgrading to an AMD 1.4ghz/266 processor, and I was wondering if I need a power supply that is rated at more than 300W. Right now, I am running a P3 700mhz, on a 300W power supply. I have found 350 and 400W power supplies on the internet. So I guess my first question is...do I need something of that caliber, and secondly, what brand should i get, or what certifications am i looking for?
  15. Well, thanks guys for all the helpful posts. I finally ended up getting a Radeon 64mb ddr vivo. Agreed that the 32meg version is the best value, but I guess I feel a little better with the extra ram under my belt. As for the matrox g450, I was looking for a tad bit more performance in 3d, and the radeon was just that. I plan on doing alot of work in photoshop, premiere, and after affects, and I believe this card will work great, especially with its vivo. A great buy all in all.
  16. Yeah, the thing is, I have a dvd player master IDE 2, and a burner slave IDE 2. Only other way I could think of getting more interfaces is with a controller card, or buying a new mobo.
  17. Well, I have an idea. Maybe if i was to run my hard drive off of an ultra ata/66 controller card I have, while running the zip drive off of IDE 1 on my motherboard's channel. Maybe that would provide sufficient separation of devices to allow my hard drive to run at ata/66, while my zip does whatever the heck it needs to do on a separate channel. Hopefully this will work.
  18. So I just bought an internal zip drive and plan on installing it as a slave on IDE 1 to my master hard drive on IDE 1. My hard drive is running ultra ata/66 right now. MY question is, will installing the zip drive on the same IDE interface limit my hard drive's speed capabilities? I have read that if you were to install a hard drive running ultra ata/33 onto the same ide interface as a hard drive running ata/66, then both hard drives would be limited to ata/33....only as fast as the slowest component. Will this same effect happen in my setup?
  19. Thanks for the input guys. I'll try the rom update.
  20. Allright, I did everything i possibly could think of to figure out whats going on, but to no avail. Here is what I did: First, I took out my cdrw drive, and set the dvd drive as master on ide 2, while my hard drive was master on ide 1. The hard drive detected in bios, the dvd drive didn't. Second, I took the dvd drive out, and put my cdrw drive in as master on ide 2, with my hard drive as master on ide 1. Once again, the hard drive detected fine in bios, cdrw did not. Ok, so then I took out both my cd rom drives. I then installed my dvd drive as slave on ide 1, with the hard drive as master on ide 1. Same thing...hard drive detected, cd rom drive didnt. Next, I took out both cd rom drives. I then added a second hard drive as slave on ide 1, with my normal hard drive as master on ide 1. BOTH hard drives detected fine in bios. So i was thinking my ide 2 interface was shot. Well, I then hooked up one hard drive as master on ide 2, with the other hard drive as master on ide 1. BOTH hard drives detected fine in bios. I then tried every single jumper option possible, repeating the process above using cable select, master/slave, and every combo in between. Still no cd rom detection in bios. So in conclusion, I have no idea what to do. You should know that the above process was tried with my motherboard's stock bios, and then tried once again with the latest bios version. What could possibly be wrong? My cd rom drives used to detect fine in bios before I got my current dvd drive. I did not change my cdrw drive, but now it doesnt detect either. PLEASE help me if you have any idea what i should do. Thanks!
  21. You might want to also consider the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. Personally, for the money, I beleive this is your best option. It clearly has superior sound quality to the sb live, and though it lacks all the advanced ins and outs, it still can run 6 speakers, has s/pdif input and output, and has a some cool features in the control panel. I got mine for 70 bucks. Thats fine if you want to pay more for the accesories like the external drive and all the advanced features, but just consider what you are actually going to be doing with this card. I was first considering the sb live platinum 5.1, but I thought about it...I dont need dd decoding on board, i dont need midi ins and outs and the other stuff, and the remote has pretty limited use. I saved myself 100 bucks and got a higher quality sound card.
  22. I have a Western Digital 18 gig on IDE 1 master. Then I have a Pioneer 16x 116 dvdrom/cd rom drive on ide2 master, and an Acer 6x4x32 on ide2 slave. I am thinking it has something to do with the pioneer drive, because before i installed it, both my old cdrom drive and my acer cdrw drive were detecting in bios. The first time I installed my decoding program (powerdvd 3.0) it asked me if i wanted to enable dma mode on the drives. I think i only enabled it for the pioneer drive. Should I set it up for both? Like you said, the dvd drive seems to handle it well, but i dont know about my burner. Regardless, it doesnt seem like dma mode would have anything to do with detection in bios. Do you think i should try to flash my bios with a newer version? I have an abit bx6-2.
  23. Sinse we are on the subject, I just had a question about PowerDVD and the decoding. If I want dolby digital 5.1, downmixed to 4.1 with the phantom center channel, do I select "4 speaker" as the audio output selection? This is what I usually select, but when I do, It grays the option to select "ac-3" under the audio mode. Does 4 speaker mode coincide with dolby digital decoding, or am I just missing something?
  24. Well, I recently formatted my computer, and just got everything up and running. But I am having a hard time remebering what to do about my cd rom drives. I have a normal dvd/cd rom drive, and a cdrw drive. I have them set as master/slave respectively on IDE 2. When I go into "IDE hard disk detection" in bios, should these two drives show up? My hard drive shows up fine as the IDE 1 master, but I cant remeber if bios will detect the cdrom drives as actual "hard disks". The main reason I am asking this is because both my cd rom drives show up in my system control panel, but I have been unable to burn cds. I get errors like "unable to identify d:" Should these drives be auto detecting in bios?
  25. Well, I too am building a new system, and have always stuck to the thought of getting the FASTEST video card on the market. However, my interest in gaming has taken a fall, and I am getting more into the quality aspect of video cards. I am looking for an extremly high quality video card that is top notch in 2d performance, but can still hold its own for the occasional gaming session. I am sure the Geforce cards have great image quality, but there must be a card out there that was built more oriented for 2d display, and still remaining strong in 3d acceleration. I just got a dvd player, and want the best quality i can get for dvd playback too. Anyone have any ideas?
