It's one of those "it depends" answers.  How important is 2-channel to you and what are your sources?  If you are just streaming background music like you say, then your setup is probably great.  You are taking advantage of the Onkyo's internal DACs and room correction, and Klipsch speakers are relatively easy to drive.

The next step up would be an AVR with multi-channel pre-outs.  This tends to put you in a higher class of AVR, with better guts and processors, across all the major manufacturers' product lineups.  And you can add a multi-channel amp to offload the front/center channels for more oomph.

The next step up would be to add a 2-channel pre-amp with home-theater bypass.  If you had a turntable or specialized DAC, and you didn't want to send these signals thru an AVR, the HT bypass feature would allow you to share the same speakers and amp, but keep your 2-channel and HT audio separated.

I've actually thought about that. I'm going to have to find one that has outs for front L/R and Sub because I while my heresy's sound awesome, they sound much better with a sub. Any suggestions?

I’m wondering the EXACT SAME THING.

Have an Onkyo tx-nr676 running my new Cornwalls and my family room theater, which actually sounds really good.

But would say, a Marantz SR6015 sound better?

    What he said :)

  3. I have a question. I currently have an Onkyo TX NR646, Klipsch Heresy's front L/R a Klipsch RP500C (center) and Klipsch RP600M's for surrounds and an SVS PC-2000 Sub. I do 80% movies but listen to music when I'm on the treadmill (in the same room) and sometimes just for relaxation. The "all channel stereo" and 2 channel mode sounds good but I wonder would upgrading to a better receiver make that much of a difference for 2 channel music? The onkyo is 100wpc and the Marantz I'm looking at is 125wpc and more importantly has preouts if I wanted to add an amp. I know the prevailing opinion is to have a dedicated 2 channel and a dedicated HT system but how close can one really get to having the cake and eating it too with a HT receiver? I'll probably eventually upgrade and separate the two systems but for now, I will have to go this route. The home theater sounds great with the heresy's by the way..

GREAT DEAL - do you have pictures of the speakers , did you audition them , are they in good condition -

No, He's out of town but I plan on getting them when he gets back assuming he still has them. He claims everything works so we'll see.

I guess the only issue is with home theater there really isn't any traditional horizontal Klipsch center that goes well with Heresys.  The Reference series has several to choose from.

I tried an Academy which most would recommend.  Sold it after a few weeks with it.  Phantom sounds infinitely better to me.  Some day I'll run across a single Heresy.

Call me crazy but I'm using the RP500c now and it sounds fine to my ears for movies. For music I listen in stereo with the Sub. I've tried dolby surround for music but the center doesn't mix well in that format.

Both sound fantastic in their own way.

I have RF-63s, RB-75,s, Heresys and Heresy 2s and think they all sound great in their prospective rigs/rooms.  IMO, none sound "better" than the other.

    @JT-TX,

Move those Heresy 1s to a stereo rig and get the RF-7IIs for your HT system.

    Bill

Thats what I'm thinking but in truth if the RF7II's don't sound any better, why bother? I can have an awesome HT and one that plays music just as well. Either way. If I find a really good deal on RF7II (or III's if I'm really lucky), I'll grab them. . A dedicated music setup with the Heresy's, the SVS Sub and a tube amp with a streamer does sound like a good idea though. Of course, then I'll want the CW's :)

    Welcome to the forum JT,

I don´t own RF7´s, but i do Heresys, first generation too. As far as i´ve read here in the forums, You can´t really compare the two.

The 7´s are all Ooomph, more modern, a lot more bass and power to fill a room(my guess).

I use my Heresy´s for music only, the woofers are decent for music, but not enough for HT. In my opinion H1s would be a waste in HT.

I´m even considering buying a turntable again, just to enjoy th H´s.

But all that is just my opinion, my 2C´s.

    André

Thanks,..The bass in my 1st gen isn't really that bad and with the PC2000, it sounds great even for movies. Just didn't know if the RF's were worth the upgrade.

I had original RF-7s and vastly prefer my Heresys to them.

Thanks..good to know. I live out in the sticks so not really any place to go listen.

  8. I recently got a pair of Heresy 1's in pretty bad shape. I re-veneered them, put in new diaphragms in the tweeters, replaced a woofer and re-capped with sonicaps. All in all, paired with an SVS PC2000, they sound great! I had RP600m's for the front mains but when I got the heresy's, I put the Heresy's in the front and moved the RP600m's to the rear surrounds. I watch 80% movies and 20% music and right now powered with an Onkyo TX NR646 (100 wpc). I plan on eventuallty buying a marantz or Denon with more juice and MAYBE adding a small amp for the front stage (although it sounds great as-is). My question is to those who have owned both, would you consider the RF7II's and upgrade or remain with the Heresy's? Thanks.

In the I don't know if it matters category. I had used those white plastic screw down clips for capacitors for a while. Snug them down with cable ties tight enough to prevent movement. One day I went back to one that had been sitting around for a while and cut the tie. Looking at the capacitor I noticed dents pressed in the side from that clip. I don't know how fragile poly caps are so I stick them down with silicone now. Means I have to let them sit for some time  before continuing but I also don't have to worry that what have I done might damage the cap. On boards with that hot melt glue often there is enough there that you take your hot air gun and heat it up and your new capacitors will stick to it just fine. I don't clean off old hot melt anymore I reuse it.

It's definitely worth checking on in the future. Thanks for the heads up.

You just went down the rabbit hole.  You need to get a better matching center to the Heresy's then anything Reference.  A KG 2.2 or 2.5 would work as would a KV-2, KV-3 not ideal but better than reference.  An Academy would be a fabulous choice and obviously a third Heresy would be the coup de gras'.

The RP500C will have to work for a while since the wife has decided that I've spent too much on "damn speakers" already. It's mainly the dialogue from the center that I'm worried about anyway. I've been a firearms instructor for over 20 years and my hearing is shot. This all started when I saw a show about surround systems and the guy said, "for those with hearing issues, a good center channel is a must". The wife had been complaining that I listen to the TV too loud. A light bulb went off and I popped open amazon and grabbed the RP500C. It has worked wonders. I turned up the center and the wife was happy. Then of course, I had to get some matching mains (RP600M's)....then a good sub...so on, so on...dang rabbit hole.  I guess I'll be watching craigslist for better centers..

  11. I recently purchased a pair of RP600M's,  RP500C (center) and an SVS PC2000 for my front stage. I had some left over Def Tech Pro Cinema 800's for surrounds. I'm running them with an Onkyo TX NR646 and it sounds great to my ears. My conundrum is that I recently came across a pair of Heresy HBR's that badly needed fixing. Well, I decided to go the full route with them, replacing caps on the drivers, replacing diaphragms, re-Vaneering the cabs, etc. Now that I'm into them this deep, I want to keep them and make them my front stage. I guess this means either moving the RP600M's to the surround position (getting rid of the Def Techs) or just stacking them in the front with the Heresy's.I LOVE the heresy's sounds for Music but haven't tried them for HT. Has anyone done this before? I guess if I do it, I'll just set them up and run calibration again with them in place?

@JT-TX I built new E crossovers with autotransformer from Mr. Crites, Erse inductor and Jantzen caps from Parts Express. You can start with just the caps, odds are autotransformer and inductor are fine. Enjoy the music!

please post pictures as you go, thanks again for keeping Heritage going.

I just ordered Sonicaps and a pair of new rings for the squawkers from Crites yesterday. They should be here friday along with my (from amazon) new soldering iron, heat shrink tubes/sleeves and heat gun :) . I started staining today as well with Tung Oil. I think I'm going to do a 2nd application tomorrow, let it dry, sand it and apply a final layer Thursday or Friday. HOPEFULLY, this will be all that is needed.

@JT-TX welcome to the forum, great work on the cabinets. You’ve fixed the real issues now it’s up to you as to how much to do. If you are happy with sound when you reassemble them, then you can leave them. Or, replace the capacitors... easy on an E crossover. Most of all enjoy them and thanks for taking care of some heritage speakers.

Thanks. I think that's just what I'm going to do. It's nice that crites still has stuff to do so the repairs with.

  14. Guys,

Recently picked up a pair of 1980 pair of Heresy HBR's. The 40yr old veneers were peeling badly, the tweeters were no longer working and one sub was out. I ordered diaphragms from Bob Crites and fixed the tweeters as well as a replacement 12" sub. I took the cabinets to a cabinet maker down the road. I had him re-veneeer both and add tilted risers. I think he did an AWESOME job. Now I just have to pick a stain. Not sure what other upgrades (caps on the drivers or A-55G replacments for the horns). Everything works as-is so maybe I'll just stain, reassemble and enjoy.
