  1. Mboxler would this be at the driver connects or at the crossover connects I am not electrical guy so if at the crossover does it have to be soldered ??? a photo showing install would be great Thanks
  2. The above show a significant drop at around 300htz. I just did a full blown REW and then a DIRAC test and in my room the biggest issue we had was the 300htz dip. What have other done to counter this dip or do you just live with it. My sound is great no issues, great sound stage, but like a typical user can it be better 1987 La Scala's, all new Crites drivers with A4500 cross over, old Velodyne UDL 15 sub located center between speakers, room 17x22 with high ceilings
  3. I put 1/2 inch mdf on my 1987 La Scala's. It totally eliminated the resonance, which gave the La Scala;s their "Live" sound . For me the resulting new sound was much more refined more similar to other high end speakers such as the newest La Scala's. I also changed the teeter and went to the Crites A4500 crossover. I have no regrets and really enjoy my modified La Scala's. I would recommend finding some new La Scala's and listen to them before you make any changes. No matter which way you go, the Basic La Scala design sound remains, it is merely which one you prefer. Good Luck and as always Enjoy the Music
  4. here is a link from the Crutchfield, scroll down about half way and it gets to new construction ideas https://www.crutchfield.com/learn/learningcenter/home/inwall_wiring.html here is a Monoprice link for bulk speaker wire for construction. https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=44334 In new construction you will need to make the decision of loose wires coming out of the wall or will you have a box like this https://www.monoprice.com/category/adapters,-switches,-&-splitters/wall-plates-&-keystones/audio-video-wall-plates-&-boxes Also do not forget to think about your network, hard wired or wifi in your room, highly recommend you run a hardwired to the room as you will need internet access for any streaming solution you use. If hardwired then it needs to be where your stereo equipment is located, if wifi choose the best place for a wifi node in your room. A small 8 port hub at you hardwired location will allow any device that needs internet access, Apple TV, Streamers, AVR's, home security cameras etc.Hardwired is better than wifi in all uses. Also remember your power needs how many things that will need power. Try and avoid the typical power strips. I have always use 4 plex power plugs and use an electrician for at least design if not installation. things that need power, Amp, Preamp, Apple TV, Network hub, AVR, home security equipment - always assume at least 2 more than planned Good Luck - a lot of things to think about. Best to sit down and think about all the things you might want to have then you will need both power and audio connections.
  5. I believe most "High End" cables are designed to solve a noise problem caused by outside electrical interference. If you do not have a noise problem and or can not hear a noise problem then new cables will not make a difference. Most logical source of electrical interference could be a near by TV of even a PC (Mac or Windows) even an old refrigerator, fan, or other electrical device can be sources which can cause a noise. Cables of any kind that can help in these conditions would have to be shielded, generally aluminum foil as part of their design and make up. Shielded cables are generally more expensive than no shielded cables. Another possible solution to this type of noise is braided cables, why I am not sure but it seems to work ???? If you are using very thin and old cables then you might get some benefit from Monoprice cables or Amazon basic cables. Hope this helps and Good Luck & Keep enjoying the Music
  6. I went to the Dark Side and modified perfectly good 1987 La Scala's, well they were butt ugly bar speakers with massive scars, different tweeters and a one torn woofer. But even under those conditions they still sounded great. The sound was very Live -but not refined Why change from original- I think the changes Klipsch has made over 40 years make sense and has refined the sound of the original PA Speakers. I added 1/2 inch MDF to all sides for more mass just like the new La Scalas' I went with all new drivers from Crites including their A4500 cross over - personal choice, many other options are available - if you choose a path make sure they work together. What I would do differently. One I would mount the tweeter on separate board and put it on top of the squaker area and at the back so drivers are in timing sync. I would also mount the squaker on front of the motor board not behind it as old La Scalal's did. I am also part of the crowd that uses a sub woofer with La Scala's. Place sub so its driver is in line with the back of the La Scala, why because the woofer fires backwards and the sound come from the back wall of the folded horn design. Once again driver syncing. System synergy is really important - results are definitely a sum of the parts. I enjoy my Dark Side La Scala's, sound stage is amazing, sound is amazing puts a smile on my face and gets a Wow from those a hear it for the first time. BTW I went with a low watt Decware Torrii Jr V2 as an amp with a MiniDSP SHD for everything else As long as you are enjoy the music who really cares
  7. First spend the time to locate your speakers in your room. given the weight of La Scalals a couple of $15.00 roller dollies will really help https://www.harborfreight.com/18-in-x-12-in-1000-lb-capacity-hardwood-dolly-58312.html also a simple electronic measure helps. Simple way to measure distances to back and side walls as well as you listening position. In addition you would be surprised that when you tilt you speakers how far off your eyes will get you. https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-GLM-20-Compact-Distance/dp/B01CG97GR2/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=electronic+measuring+devices&qid=1680620853&sr=8-3 Also some blue masking tape will allow you mark and try different locations. Also due to room differences your toe in may or may not be equal One your speakers are located, then the impact of DSP will be enhanced Hope this helps Enjoy The Music
  8. I re-surfaced my 1987 bar room L Scala's. First take out all the drivers it really helps especially with weight. Next go inside and put a bead of glue in all the corners where wood meets wood, this insures you end up with a truly sealed box. Also look at the wire from the crossover to the driver, mine was very light and I changed it to 10 gauge wire, not sure t makes any difference but I felt better afterwards Spend the time to strengthen that corner and fill all the other imperfection and then sand smooth. It will like surprise you how much veneer it will take to cover your speakers. First decide how you want the grain to flow. Will you also cover the bottom, what about the back. How do you want the front edges to look like when you done. As for new grills I used this https://www.parts-express.com/Speaker-Grill-Frame-Kit-260-346?quantity=1 easy to use. BTW after I was done with my La Scala's I left the grills off, its a personal preference thing so not required. Lastly since you mentioned that you tilted the speakers to get the best sound - get a couple of sturdy boxes and raise them off the floor. With my La Scala's the difference was small but I have kept them elevated Good Luck and Enjoy The Music
  9. Agree with "001" on raising your speakers, Why easy to do, cheap, as any cheap storage box will do for testing, and it it does nothing then take them off the boxes no harm no foul. I raised my La Scala's by 12 inches as a test in my room. In my case there was a minor difference and that difference was positive so I am keeping it that way. If someone's recommendations sounds odd to you because it is not considered the " norm" well maybe that persons room is not normal and that is why it worked for them. Remember your room has an impact of up to 50% of what you hear. Would I spend a ton of money to try someone's else's ideas, probably not, $15-25 I might give it a go Enjoy the journey, be flexible and in all cases Enjoy the Music
  10. Looking at all the responses, our Heritage speakers seem to be very flexible in reproducing enjoyable sounding music. Which kind of explains why I enjoyed my system when it was driven by a Crown 1500 XLI versus now being driven by a Decware Torii Jr V2 amp. I think this probably also applies to or very different Dac choices. Personally, I prefer new designs and Dacs over "Vintage equipment". Probably system integration and our listening rooms play a big part in our final choices. My La Scala's are my finale speaker choice, my Decware amp is looking like a final amp choice. Now what is in option is my Dac. I primarily listen to my own Flac music files ( 16/44.1 ) and to a lessor amount internet streaming music. Within these two areas there many options to look at and consider. I created 16/44.1 Flac files ( basic CD level ) as I want my money spent on a Dac to be utilized for up-scalling for better sound. Finding a pure Dac ( no other function ) to connect with a streamer is very limited , most options are those two functions combined. Oh well all part of the journey. Enjoying The Music
  11. something to try get two of the largest towels you have, hang them over your rack or maybe tape to back wall. Listen to some music that has good center channel and see if it is better. If it sounds better then you have a direction to go, if not it did not cost anything to try and find out Good Luck & Enjoy the Music
  12. DAC - MiniDSP SHD Amp - Decware Torii Jr V2 Speakers 1987 La Scala's wide and deep sound stage good base
  13. Have to agree with Got_Horns, my rounded ceiling make a a big difference in everything I hear. I can stand next to the TV and look back at my setting position and you would swear I had surround speakers some where. If you noticed I raised my La Scala's 12 inches off the floor and while it only made a slight difference I like it enough to keep them raised. I believe this is because my peak ceiling height is 14 feet Your speaker location and your room are very important in what you hear, start with your front left and right and get them so you hear the best base and center stage. Internet is full of how to's. In my room my La Scala's are toed in at different angles because there is no left wall as it opens into a large dinning room something that helps in locating your speakers is a simple laser light measuring device about $35.00 at most hardware stores. this really helps in measuring sidewall distances and in accurately point your speakers, using only your eyes and your perception is generally way off from my experience Hope this helps & Enjoy The Music
  14. 17 ft X 19 ft Ceiling is barrel shaped running along the 19 ft length with a max height of 14 ft. the barrel shape adds 4 ft to the 10 foot side walls. One 19 ft side opens up to a dinning room La Scala's are place against the 17 ft wall
  15. Just FYI about how much power any speaker needs
  16. To rip your DC's try Exact audio one of many good ones https://www.exactaudiocopy.de
  17. Here are couple of other options More $$$ but worth it if you have to go that way MiniDSP SHD if you want something to include a DAC, provides an tablet or smart phone interface via Volumio, also includes REW and Dirac $1,299, XLR & RCA out https://www.minidsp.com/products/streaming-hd-series/shd MiniDSP Studio utilizes an external DAC or a AVR Dac $949 https://www.minidsp.com/products/streaming-hd-series/shd-studio I use Audirvana Studio (Mac or Pc) based music server seen remotely via Tablet or smart phone same concept as Squeezbox, it can see network audio device and send the signal to it via network, if you Sony is connected ( hardwired is best ) to the network it should work https://audirvana.com 30 day free trail can handle DSD easily, interface is good for seeing albums and music , connects with commercial music streamers - worth a look
  18. Tony I agree that is the classic positioning related to the La Scala's. The one factor that is different for every person is the room that the speakers are placed in. In my case I have 10 foot walls and then another 4 feet of ½ pipe as a ceiling the entire 20 ft length of my room. I also have a pair of older KG4's which is where I first noticed the benefit of tilting the speakers back, in that room The La Scala's also benefited from a small amount of tilt . This tilting also rose the center stage sound which I also liked. It is what worked for me in my room, it may not be beneficial for most. but we all have to work with the room we have Bottom line it is all about enjoying the music
  19. Yes adding the butcher block makes the speakers much heavier. I solved this issue by putting carpet sliders under the 4 corners of the speaker. once again simple, cheap and easily undone if you do not like it. Please keep in mind when you make any change to the La Scala's you "should " try repositioning them even small adjustments can make a difference.. One problem with La Scala's is they can sound good just stuck in a room in any manner. But proper sounding of each speaker can enhance your enjoyment. Enjoy the Music
  20. Item #5 Freedom from cavities I used a 2 inch butcher block on the bottom of my La Scala's That did two things 1. raised the tweeter 2 inches 2. filled the voids With the void filled I was then able to tilt the boxes to get the tweeter where it needed to be. It works, it is cheap and reversible if you do not like it. BTW painted the butcher block flat black looks like right out of the factory You can buy a 24x48 piece of butcher block at home depot or lowes - just cut it in half, drill some pilot holes and screw it to the bottom
  21. I did what you are planing for the same reasons, onli I use ½ inch MDF then veneer, I even put MDF in the area containing the Squaker and tweeter, top of dog house. The results are a more refined sound, does nothing for base and I have found tilting the speakers up provides the best sound. Sound stage is slightly better and I have really enjoyed the difference FYI I also updated all three drivers and crossover using Crites products.
  22. I just completed mine, went with the 1/2 mdf on all sides including on the floor of the tweeter and squaker box area. Yes there is enough room. I also added 1/2 mdf to the bottom of the speaker. Be aware the Live Sound we all like from the La Scala's is changed as the cabinet no longer vibrates. But the new sound is much more refined, all the other characteristics of La Scala stay the same. I would imagine that if you had the latest version of La Scala's with 1 inch MDF and older La Scala's with 1/2 mdf added in the same room they would be very similar. the dog house is where you need to fine veneer talent. we used sand bags and other weights for the 24 hour glue time, it is a time consuming pain, BTW small hands help Behind the dog house is a open space I choose to paint it semi gloss black prior to the new veneer being applied made the process much easier and looks great. I also painted the back of the speaker semi gloss black no one generally see's this area. BTW the veneer process takes 3 sheets of 4X8 veneer my maple was $60.00 per sheet Hope this helps
  23. maple veneer was $60.00 per 4x* sheet and I used 3 sheets to re-veneer mine. The outsides are easy the inside areas around the dog house are a real pain. A good veneer job requires some form of pressure while the glue is setting up about 24 hours and that is very hard to do in the dog house area. look for a cabinet maker or furniture refinisher not cheap
