  1. Haven't heard JEMs, Tecate, save the recent LaScala AL5 demo, and believe the caps are holding the speaker back considerably, Chief Bonehead's preferences notwithstanding. If you really want to step out into the wild side, try expensive paper in oil caps, or the very inexpensive Russian MBGO-2 paper in oil caps. You really owe it to yourself to see what all the fuss is about....
  2. Thank you very much for taking the time to measure, plot, and share, very much appreciated. So, I see 1W at 1.25% THD, 5.5W at 5% for a fair amount of headroom, and a very nice looking frequency response extending both low and high. Really want to try a similar EL34 SE amp in my system and compare to my reference amps.

Simple dust remover for me, not so sure about all those other stylus Stylast claims....
  4. It's never a big deal until it is. Like most every other new idea or mod I've stumbled across, was very skeptical at first, then begrudingly gave it a try to see what all the fuss was about, then regretted not trying earlier. Following is a short list of things I've had to modify my thinking about: Tube amps, Analog always, MP3s, dynamic range expanders, caps, caps, and more caps, crossover changes, variable L-pads, power line conditioning, and every single wire in my system, including power cords for my amps. Your mileage may vary....

I've used Holy water absconded from my local Catholic church.
  6. Hard to believe there is no dealer close to you in South Jersey or a pair of any used Heritage horn loaded speakers one could demo. It would be very tough to ante up for a pair of LaScala AL5 without a demo, but then again their finer points will be hard to assess in a short demo. I demoed a pair of LaScala AL5 a few weeks ago and was very impressed, they did not sound anything like the LaScalas I bought new in 1981 and played for 35 years.
  7. With speakers like this, it is all about the location, San Fran in this instance. Also, the drivers were all updated in subsequent variations of the Heresy Industrial, although some favor the K55V, and those K22 woofers look to be more impressive than the later stamped frames.
  8. Well as long as she did not give you the finger indicating you're number 1....
  9. When I was following the dirt bike magazines, ad copy became indistinguishable from the dirt bike test "reports".
  10. More like did you check the ads, ad revenue has to be the main driver of the so-called audio press.
  11. Yeah, but Krell ! 100W Class A.... For me, Class A amps have a boring no sound sound.
  12. Still feeling my way around the various output transformers, which seem to be the most critical part in any transformer coupled amp. My Fisher 500C had very hefty output transformers to support 30 wpc. Should output transformers be larger ? Smaller may be better ? Goldilocks ? Do smaller OPTs favor the high end and run warmer ?
  13. Side note: Recently demoed the LaScala AL5 and Cornwall IV at my local dealer (odd there is a Klipsch dealer 3 miles from my house, but I live close to everything....) On the way out had a quick look at the Focal Grande system ($250 K), it had it's own room to itself. Had to resist the urge to poke one of the many drivers out in the open collecting dust.
  14. Yeah, but are these $250 K to $1 M systems really real world ? Do any but the 1% have any hope of owning this stuff other than a chance one time listen ? Is that what this hobby is all about ? Fully realize everyone has a different approach to the quest, but why even look down that road ?
  15. ^^^ What he said.^^^ Getting familiar with the Klipsch sound over the years, realized my LaScala had absolutely no low bass, and very loud forward midrange. Not what I was hoping for when I bought into the lively dynamic promise of super efficient horn loaded speakers. After researching and attempting mods on my Heresy crossover, have come to realize a correction of the overly hot midrange goes a long way towards taming the sound. I believe Fletcher Munson would approve....
  16. Thanks Curious George, I was eyeing that very EL34 SE amp for $350, then I found some 20W OTL amps. But I still have interest in this amp....
  17. Apparently Claude is shopping for new amps, have you checked the Little Sweetie ?
  18. Yes, but they usually have some sort of indicator discontinued. The P39 just seemed to have a link to find a dealer.
  19. OK, so upon hearing this for the first time, wondered why it sounded so familiar: Apparently a couple of members of the Turtles were among Zappa's band at the time. And although we have jumped way far ahead to the climax of this album, live performance, it would behoove all to become familiar with this entire album, especially for the legendary Mud Shark episode very well retold here.

Oh, well it used to be wet one edge of Discwasher brush with large plastic wood handle grip, three times around the record spinning, and then a quick dab of stylus tip with Audio Technica AT607 stylus cleaner in small pyramid shaped amber bottle. Only then was Iron Man allowed to wreak his vengence.

Does music playback first thing in the morning and upon fall of darkness count ?
  22. Um, subwoofers are L and R ? Perhaps Claude could elaborate more on proper placement of subs ?
  23. Interesting, and neither the Target nor Mathmos come with needed wire upgrades: $9 dimmer, $4 electrical box for dimmer, $12 extension cord. Another $25 towards my $25 original purchase.
  24. It's always about the location with these speakers....
