  1. I hear what you're saying about the Klipsch magic. Whatever mods I end up with, I'll make sure that I have everything to put the Klipschorns back to stock if necessary. There is something very cool about the heritage line straight from PWK's brain... P.S. I'm still hoping for the 300hz exponential from Dr. Edgar.
  2. TBrennan, Thanks for the advice. I'm there. I've just gotten a pair of JBL 2482's that need some TLC ( and a horn ). Bill.
  3. I received a response from Bruce Edgar. All it said was that his current design is "too big for Khorn. I need to know your height requirements." I replied that I have no height requirements, as the new horn will sit on top of the bass horn with the current mid/tweet enclosure removed. I haven't heard anything since. A busy man, no doubt. I'm in the process of getting some JBL 2482's for this application. I've also asked him about his other products (salad bowls), but no response. Does anyone have any new information, or a price for 300hz Salad Bowls? Thanks, Bill.
  4. Tubelion, "Work" is a relative term. This horn is designed with certain parameters in mind (both physical and acoustical) and the driver that meets those design prameters best will have the best success. I'm no expert, but I've learned to spot them. Bruce Edgar is one. There are others in this forum, as well. There have been a few midrange upgrade projects documented on this forum. It's great reading. Later, BillyRyan.
  5. Tubelion, I'm pretty sure an adaptor would be needed. He's designing this around the JBL driver which has a 2 inch throat and 4 bolt mounting. I'm looking into adaptors for the short term. I'll let you know what I find. BillyRyan
  6. I've e-mailed Mr. Edgar with the following questions... - Will it be fully useable down to 300hz with a JBL 2482? - Is it much different in size compared to the Klipsch K400? - Is it a "shell" or stand alone horn? What is the material? - How'd the testing go, and are you taking orders yet?
  7. Tubelion, Just to add more logs to the fire, the horn we have been discussing is of another variety: exponential. TBrennan: Does this apply to exponential, as well as tractrix?
  8. Tubelion, Why 300hz? What that means is that the horn lens will provide "horn loading" for the driver down to 300hz. The driver will have it's own frequency ratings, as well. I'm interested in a JBL 2482 compression driver that will also go down to 300hz and will mate to this new horn. The Klipsch driver is rated down to 400hz and would need adaptors to fit the new horn. (I'm also betting the overall size of the new horn is different, too) So some modifications would be necessary. If a new driver is used, crossover work is something to look into. I'd like to get as much midrange as possible through the compression driver because I like the way compression drivers sound. I'd also like to get more high frequencies (300 - 400hz) off of the 15inch woofer that is inside the Klipsch bass horn. I think the compression driver will do a better job with these frequencies than the 15inch woofer. I also feel that the Klipsch mid driver is excellent until about 95db, then I want more. I always want more. These are just my opinions and my goals for my version of this wonderful hobby. There are as many opinions and goals as there are audiophiles on this forum. That's what makes it fun. Happy listneing, BillyRyan
  9. Tubelion, Mr. Edgar is testing the first prototypes of the 300hz exponential horn at this time. He quoted the price of $150 each. Sounds pretty good to me. I will probably go this route, if for no other reason than the trusted source. I'd probably "adapt" the Klipsch driver at first, while shopping for some JBL 2482's. In the meantime, I'm moving from AK-2 crossovers to 1st order butterworth. Hovland cap and Solen inductor. Happy listening, BillyRyan.
  10. Bruce Edgar says that he'll be testing the prototype of his 300hz exponential horn this weekend. Preliminary price quoted at $150 each.
  11. Mike, Thanks for the info on Mr. Edgar's new rectangular horn. I'm thinkin' that's a good upgrade path. I like the idea of a larger compression driver (300hz)instead of an Oris. I will e-mail Mr. Edgar and inquire as to price and availability. Thanks, BillyRyan.
  12. T - Thanks for the good feedback on the woodhorns. I agree with you about Constant Directivity horns; too "PA" for me. I'd really like to see what Dr. Bruce would put in this niche!!! Has anyone talked to him recently about this prospect? I need to hear an Oris horn used as a midrange from about 300 to 5K or so with the Klipsch bass horn and a really fine tweet. I would also like to hear a larger compression driver and horn. If I'm not mistaken, that's what you ended up doing? Thanks again, Billy.
  13. Bill Martinelli at woodhorn.com has a 400hz horn that will mate to the Klipsch driver.
  14. How did they sound, compared to the K400?
  15. I e-mailed Klipsch for price and infomation about the new material used in the K401. Perhaps someone with an extra hundred bucks can do a comparison. Here's the reply: Your Horn part number is 130017 K-401 Horn at a cost of $49.91 each and are available for purchase. I'm not sure if this is the current material or not! You might want to contact our technical dept. at 800-554-7724 option 2 and one of the guys will be able to tell you more about the horn! If you would like to order the horn contact us at 800-554-7724 option 3 for parts and either Russ or myself will place the order for you.
  16. This new K401 sounds interesting. Has anyone done a K400/K401 comparison? Yet another tweak option for the pursuit of perfect midrange...
  17. I'm considering an Oris horn as a midrange. I just want to fatten up the mid frequencies. I'm also very interested in a JBL 2482 or Altec 290 crossed over at 300hz. I'm also looking into an array of 5 inch drivers and tractrix (bowls and rectangles) horns. I must admit, a big compression driver that can go down to 300hz seems to be leading the list. Whatever I end up doing, I'll keep the Klipschorn top stock so I can put it back on. Maybe I'll end up building all of them, cuz I've really got the modification bug bad. That's what hobbies (obsessions) are all about, I guess. Bye the way, I've just bi-amped my Klipschorns with AES 300b running the mid/tweet and a KTA 30/30 300b push-pull on the bass horn. This give me a 4 way hybrid system (3way active Marchand with passive between mid/tweet) with my 18" subs crossed at 60hz. I guess I've created a low end that needs a stronger hi end... I have no one to blame but myself.
  18. Has anyone had any experience with the Oris horns? I've seen them on top of LaScala's and Klipschorns.
  19. Thanks to all for the input. I see that Bill Martinelli (bmar) at woodhorn.com has a new wooden horn that will go down to 400hz. Check out his web site. Thanks again, Bill.
  20. Thanks for the info! The Altec is something I will look into. I agree the TAD's are a bit spendy, but, this is an obsession so it doesn't have to make sense, eh? Bill.
  21. Yes, I'll keep a tweeter. Either the Klipsch or something else. It would depend on the frequencies that the mid could cover. I agree that the challenge is to find a compression driver that will go that low. Woodhorn.com (bmar) is working on a wooden horn that can go to 400hz and use the Klipsch driver. I would like to experiment with larger drivers, as well. Perhaps a compromise of 450hz would sound o.k. with the Klipsch bass horn rated for 400hz and a JBL or Altec compression rated at 500hz? (24db slope) The only compression drivers I've seen that go down to 400hz are Selenium, ALE. Are there any others that come to mind? I'm also very interested in a rectangular tractix horn. Has anyone ever tried a rectangular tractrix (ala Edgar) horn in a Klipschorn or LaScala?
  22. Has anyone had any experience with using any other midrange compression drivers down to 400hz; OR replacing the mid with a different type of horn? (I've noticed the Altec mods; what is their freq rating) There seem to be very few compression drivers that are rated that low in frequency. I'm toying with the idea of playing with the mids in my klipschorns. I'm wondering about: larger compression drivers, salad bowls with compression drivers, and rectangular tractrix with a cone driver. The mids will have a 24db active crossover at 400hz driven with a 300b SET. I plan on using a passive crossover between the squawker and tweeter. Thanks for any experience or input you may have. Bill.
  23. I built the false corners from the "Dope from Hope" article. I used 3/4 mdf on one side and 1/2 on the other with 2X4 framing in between. I then filled the interior with sand. Very solid. I had pretty good corners to begin with, my main goal was to move the sweet spot farther back into the room. This worked very well.
  24. I recently added sub's to my Klipschorn's and was concerned with the subs keeping up. I looked into dual SVS Ultra's (SVS recommendation) but I ended up with twin North Creek Leviathan 18" woofers in parallel. They are driven by a Mackie 1400 bridged mono at 1200 watts. Works very well at any volume. Check 'em out at northcreekmusic.com.
  25. Does anyone know if the Klipsch T5A transformer in AK-2 crossover provide access to all of the taps like the Universal 3619 that ALK uses? Are the wires present? ------------------ 2 channel: 1989 AK-2 Klipschorns AES AE-3 DJH tube preamp AES SE-1 SIG SET tube amp Denon 615 CDP Pair Northcreek 18" subs Mackie 1400i power amp HTS: Vidikron Kronos CRT Faroudja 2200 Scaler Denon 5800 receiver Denon DVD-1000 RCA DTC100 HD receiver Sonance in wall Velodyne HGS10 sub X-Box This message has been edited by BillyRyan on 09-26-2002 at 03:49 PM
