  1. Go to the Klipsch home page. On the left hand side (under the Klipsch logo) go to Classic Product then select Synergy. You'll be able to get the KSF-S5 specs there. I've got a set of S5's. They're the standard Klipsch WDST surround design (woofer in the center, with a horn on each angled side), which I assume is what you mean by "tripolar". They have 180 degree coverage horizontally, and seem to do a great job in my setup (with KSB-3.1 mains and KSC-C1 center). I can't answer how well they'll match your SF-2's, since I haven't heard that combo. They have been discontinued for about 3 years, so may be harder to find than the newer SS-1 surrounds. Good luck! Steve
  2. Here's a web site that has very comprehensive reviews of lots of "universal remotes", as well as user reviews of many models: http://www.remotecentral.com/ It doesn't look like they've done a detailed review of the RCA remote you're asking about, but there is a single user review: http://www.remotecentral.com/ureview/66.htm Hope you'll find this to be a helpful site. Steve
  3. I've been using Netflix since late '99. They're a good example of an Internet-based company that actually works well! We typically watch 10-12 movies a month (the basic "3 DVDs at a time" plam), so I guess that adds up to a couple hundred titles over that time. My only problems have been two scratched and unwatchable DVDs (they were replaced as soon as I reported the problem), and one title that was lost in the mail (again, not a problem once I reported it). New titles typically release on Tuesday (same as for most vendors). I've had good luck getting new releases if I can return a DVD so they receive it on Tuesday. If a movie is in high demand, there may be several weeks' delay if you can't get it on the first day. Netflix opened a Denver distribution center last year (along with about 15 others around the US, according to an intereview with their CEO on CNN a few days ago), so the typical 1-2 day turnaround for mail has help my "throughput" quite a bit. Another nice thing is the extensive collection of titles - most every DVD that's been produced. A huge selection compared to most video stores. Also, you can search on actors, producers, directors, etc., to find movies you may be interested in. You can also rate movies as you watch them, and their software will recommend other titles you may like based on your ratings. All in all - I'd highly recommend Netflix!
  4. The highest resolution HD signal is 1080i, with a frame size of 1920 x 1080 pixels. At this point, most if not all projectors are lower res, so the signal gets resampled to the projector's native resolution. The Crutchfield catalog has a tutorial about HDTV which you may find useful: http://www.crutchfield.com/infocenter/S-SjwrTQKEA6n/home/tv_hdtv.html
  5. Klipschlover, Congrats on scoring a pair of KLF-30's! Since you're now experienced at uBid, you might want to look into getting a matching KLF-C7 center speaker. They've been going (on uBid) for about $230 + about $50 s/h. Steve
  6. Ozone can be pretty nasty stuff, especially in closed spaces (such as most home theaters are probably in ...). The OSHA limit for prolonged human exposure is 0.1 parts per million. In addition to attacking mucous membranes (lungs, eyes, throat, etc.), it degrades many rubber and plastic products (such as wiring insulation and speaker surrounds). Not great stuff to have around your HT, let alone yourself! Here's a link detailing all the nasty effects: http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/ozonegen.html
  7. I've bought quite a few things from uBid over the years, including a set of KLF-20's and KLF-C7's. I've had generally good results. Just be careful not to get "caught up in the bidding frenzy" so you don't pay more than you want. It's best to keep an eye out for a newly opened auction, and just put in the minimum bid as soon as you can. Then, come back shortly before the auction closes and update your bid; later bids can be bumped if you have an "earlier first bid" time (read the rules for all the details). Be aware that your bid is PER SPEAKER, not per pair. Also, be sure to factor in the cost of shipping, which can be quite high (the weights listed are PER SPEAKER, so the total s/h for a set of KLF-30's is something like $230). Anyway, you can still get a good deal, especially considering the full 5-year Klipsch warranty will be in effect (unlike purchases, even of new Klipsch, from eBay and such). Good luck! Steve
  8. You might also consider getting some Legends -- they'd certainly provide the "punch" you mentioned. uBid has been offering KLF-30's (usually closing at about $300/ea) and KLF-C7's (usually closing around $220). With their inflated shipping, you'd be in for a bit more than $1K for your front speakers. If your budget includes surrounds and rear center, then these would be out of range. Anyway, if you're interested, here's the link: http://www.ubid.com/cat/get_cat_page.asp?CatID=1226
  9. The older RS-3 DOES have keyhole slots for wall mounting. You can download the RS-3 manual from the "Help Center" on this website. Don't know if this would have changed on the RS-3II's. On the KSF-S5 (as fini mentioned), one of the keyholes also has a threaded insert. This allows for hanging the speaker from the wall or ceiling using something like an OmniMount bracket. If this is possible on the RS-3II, you might consider that type of mount as well (makes it easy to tilt and aim the speakers ...)
  10. Ditto your comments. I think the confusion has been that some folks don't realize the plastic plugs in the center of the binding posts are removable. Apparently (according to several past posts on this BB), the plugs are there to prevent some European power plugs from being inserted into the binding posts. Once the plugs are popped out - voila - banana plugs can be used!
  11. This auction on uBid is for 48 new KLF-30's (black). The auction closes in about an hour, and right now I'd guess they'll go for about $250 ea. Ground shipping on a pair is about $235 additional, which IS a big ripoff. But still, getting a pair of new 30's with the full Klipsch warranty for about $750 total (no sales tax on uBid) strikes me as a pretty decent deal.... Here's the URL of the auction, if anyone wants to check it out: http://www.ubid.com/actn/opn/getpage.asp?AuctionId=7499630
  12. I don't actually have experience with the SS-1's, so can't say how they'll sound with your KSF speakers. It does seem, though, that the Holy Grail of HT speakers is to get a set that's timbre matched. I don't think the SS-1's are all that much smaller, either. So, I'd still give my vote to the S5's. They are available in a white finish (see eBay link below), which may help them blend better with your walls and ceiling. Would that help any with the spousal approval factor? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1362625004 This message has been edited by SteveLee on 07-01-2002 at 12:33 AM
  13. The KSF-S5's also use the WDST design (even though it's not mentioned on the spec sheets now available for discontinued Klipsch speakers). I've had a pair for about 2 years, and really appreciate the flexibility the WDST design allows for placement in my "difficult" room (doors and windows in the way of allowing a nice, symmetric speaker layout). The S5's also have a "threaded insert" in the back, making it easy to hang them from a wall or ceiling using brackets like OmniMounts. Since the S5's are voice-matched to your 10.5's, I think it'd be wise to go with them instead of the SS-1's. As long as the used set you're looking at is in good shape, I think there's no need to compromise in getting a truely matched set of speakers for your HT setup. In case you're interested, there are currently a couple pair of S5's listed on eBay (so you can compare to the deal you've already looked into): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1362063398 Good luck! Steve
  14. For those of you interested in making a "HornEd converted Legend center speaker", there's a single KLF-30 listed on eBay. Looks like it's fully functional, in good condition, and with the black finish. Right now, the bid is at $31, and the auction ends early morning on 1 July. Just thought I'd pass it along: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1363167978
  15. OK - now you've got me started! I work with space images all the time, so have quite a few favorite sites you all may find interesting .... There are some great 1 meter/pixel Ikonos satellite images of various Earth locations in the SpaceImaging gallery: http://www.spaceimaging.com/level1/index38.htm For $10, you can buy hi-res digital snapshots of many locations (follow the "Browse and Buy" link). There are lots of beautiful hi-res images from the Hubble Space Telescope available for free download here: http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/Pictures.html Follow the "Pictures Organized by Subject" link, and then "Solar System" -- I was involved in taking many of the Mars images released there :-) Speaking of Mars, there are frequent releases of the new images from the Mars Odyssey and Mars Global Surveyor missions: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/odyssey/ http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/mgs/index.html For a great collection of images from any of the planets, try NASA's Planetary Photojournal: http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/ Just click on the planet, then you can search on the planet, moons, and various spacecraft. Many of these images (especially the Mars ones) can be many tens to a few hundred MB in size. For lots of hi-res images of the Shuttle or ISS, check out the gallery on the NASA Human Spaceflight site: http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/ Follow the Realtime Data" link to "Sighting Opportunities", and you can check out when the ISS or shuttle are visible inb your area: http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/SSapplications/Post/SightingData/sighting_index.html If everyone on this BB makes a a real effort to download all of these images, I expect we can bring the Internet to its knees!! Enjoy! Steve
  16. I agree - the AVIA test disc is a good one. It's a great resource for setting up both the audio and video components in your HT.
  17. For anyone still looking for Legends, KLF-30's and KLF-C7's have been showing up on uBid for the past few days: http://www.ubid.com/cat/get_cat_page.asp?CatID=1226 The auctions seem to be closing at reasonable prices, but watch out for the shipping charges!
  18. Call 1-800-KLIPSCH and ask for Tech Support. They should be able to get you a set of replacement parts.
  19. I have a pair of black KSF-S5's. For what it's worth, they have perforated metal speaker grills -- not cloth. I can't answer how easy it will be to paint them, but I expect it's easier to spray the metal grills than it would be to change out cloth ... Also, I think I've seen pictures of the white S5's, and the portion that's "under the grill" (the 2 horns and woofer cone and surrounding MDF) is black; it is the grills and exterior "frame" that are white. So, it may not be all that hard to paint the parts that actually show. Good luck!
  20. http://www.fightdivx.com/This site regularly updates deals, coupon specials, pre-order schedules, etc. -- for DVD's and electronics. Info. is included for most major distributors.
  21. I used a copy of the AVIA Guide to Home Theater DVD to set up my system. They seem to strongly recommend using the analog RS SPL meter.
  22. Yes, the plugs do come out so you can use banana connectors. Try gently prying them out with a small screwdriver (like the type you'd use to tighten screws on eyeglasses) or perhaps a nail file. The trick is to "get under" the edge of the plug, then it'll pop out easily ... Good luck! Steve
  23. I just scored a Klipsch LF-10 on uBid for $369, which seems to be a good deal (assuming no defects ...). I currently have a KSW-12, and am wondering if it'll make any sense to run the LF-10 with my front and LFE channels and use the KSW-12 with the rear channels. Seems like lots of folks are using multiple subs, so I'm wondering if this combo (two subs with very different output and frequency range) makes any sense? I'll appreciate hearing your thoughts ... Steve ----------------- Front L/R: KLF-20 Front/Rear Center: KLF-C7 Rear Surround: KSF-S5 (for now) Subs: KSW-12, LF-10
  24. For those still looking for Legends, it looks like uBid has started offering KLF-10's, KLF-20's, and KLF-C7's again. Just a heads up .... http://www.ubid.com/cat/get_cat_page.asp?CatID=1226 This message has been edited by SteveLee on 12-20-2001 at 11:06 AM
  25. I think there was also an issue with availability of "software". In the early days of video sales and rentals, there were far more titles available in VHS than Beta. So, VHS was the leader out of the gate, and eventually became the "standard". By the way, Beta is still used in the broadcast industry for standard definition NTSC TV. That is, much of the video shot for broadcast is recorded on Beta. I suppose that will give way to HD recording once analog TV broadcasts are phased out ....
