  1. I have no experience or comment on either piece of equipment. Never heard the Crowns and briefly heard the 901's, nothing critical.
  2. Bill and Kevin each gave it one star. At least give it a 5 star rating.
  3. You have quite a treasure there. Do some listening and get used to them. You should eventually rebuild the crossovers (just replace the capacitors) and refinish the speakers. The original tweeters are Electrovoice K77's. If yours were switched out, I have a pair of K77's that I will sell for $50 plus shiping if you are interested. Check around, this is a really low price for these tweeters. Please post some photos of the speakers, drivers and crossovers.
  4. WOW. Hard to pass that up. Does he have plans to use them? Quite a story if they are keepers.
  5. Only 4 responses. I figured that this would be the longest thread ever. It used ot be SS v Valves or SET vs high power. Then Deaf Jeff and Lisa, now its Crown and our old favorite, Bose.
  6. No offense to anyone here. I was very happy with my AH player for a few years. It had evey tweek and upgrade and a pair of very rare 1962 Amperex PQ white labels. The Musical Fidelity A308CR CD player was a big jump up in performance for only about $300 more than the AH (both used). More separation and detail. I sat there one day and though that my system had taken a big jump up, it was that I had put in the A308 one month earlier. There is one for $1100 and one for $1395 right now. If you don't like the A308 you can sell it for more than you paid in the fall when prices rise. There are also a few Musical fidelity 3.5 CD players for about $700 that should outperform the AH player. They are also built like a tank and the AH has a flimsy chassis. I would also guess that the Rega's that Mark recommends are also quite good. The $1000 to $1250 price range used on Audiogon gets into some nice territory (about $2500 to $3000 new).
  7. $3,000 is a lot for a CD player. Are you looking for a Macintosh to match? Many Mac owners like to have all Mac Equipment. I really like Musical Fidelity. I have this one and it is outstanding (much better than my old loaded AH! Tube player). Another forum member had one and loved it too: http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?dgtlplay&1212700833 I seem to remember the seller having it listed for $1000 not too long ago. This is a great player, especially for the price. If you want to spend more, look at the TriVista or NuVista. Each is below your max price point. I have read that Meridian's are outstanding. I have no experience with them. Check out Audiogon. Esoteric makes some really nice units. A friend of mine had this one: http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?dgtlplay&1210114242 He paid $4000 for it a few years ago. It upsamples like crazy and has several selection modes modes. It is a multi lplayer that supports most formats but is outstanding on CD's. Also check out Sony.
  8. Wardsweb, WOW. A rack of SAE equipment and 901's. I feel like it is 1985. That is a cool picture. As far as buying 901's to prove to others that Klipsch is superior, who cares? Let them buy 901's. They can have "the best" for $1395 and never have to upgrade.
  9. Didn't Klipsch just use whatever they could get a good deal on in bulk?
  10. I was thinking liquidate and buy one pair of Jub's and one pair of P39's. The Jubs go in the corner so the P39's can go in the room's neutral zone. Great music available and those beautiful floors can be seen.
  11. Thanks for all the notes guys. I've been advised that although I love the 681EEE (used to back cue for cassette recording- I know I know), that it's elastomeric bits are pretty much dust by now and I should get new cart. Get a new cart if your is worn. I have heard a huge difference in surface noise between carts.
  12. I have the parts for a very similar setup. The only difference is a 2470 midrange driver and electronic crossover. How do you like the 2482's?
  13. The Tractrix did help? I never tried the Tractrix horns and my complaint was always that the K Horns had a flat soundstage and a hole in the middle. I am going to have to build a pair of these and try them out.
  14. We all should stop. You passed the point where you should stop a long time ago (and so did most of us here). If you really enjoy spinning vinyl right now there is no need to go further. Are you at this point: you don't get too excited about something new because you are currently satisfied but its fun to get new equipmnet. I was all ready to stop not too long ago and then someone wanted to buy my speakers to finish out his home theater. Now I have speakers that I though I would never buy on the way to me. Its madness. This thread reads like Question: "I'm thinking of giving up crack. Should I give up crack? I think that I am happy and don't need any more crack." Answer: "Have you ever tried this kind of crack? You'll love it!!" I am just as guilty. Anyway, if you are happy, start saving your discretionary money for a while and buy CD's and LP's to satisfy your spending needs (it is fun to buy stuff). At the end of it you may buy some really expensive audio or maybe something else. We bought dirt bikes last year - tons of fun, I always wanted one when I was a kid and the parent said no.
  15. I don't think that Beer and Camaros and Whiskey and Ferrari's are good combinations.
  16. I found K Horns to be very two dimensional btu I only used the K400 horn. I am curious about the midrange horn that you are using. Have you compared it to a Tractrix horn? If it sounds good it is quite a bargain at $35 each.
  17. There are a bunch of older threads where many would not uses fuses because they didn't want to add anyhting to the circuit. I always use them.
  18. Mark, I'm sure that I am not the first to post this, but nice new avatar and system profile.
  19. It looks like yopu have everything that you need. Many say that the A's and the AA's are the best sounding factory crossovers. You can convert the AA to an A very easily. I can't find the schematic right now, but it is easy and if I remember correctly, just involves removing the tweeter protection. When I have built A's, I added a fuse to the tweeter circuit. Go to ALK's site and use the same value that he specifies for his ALK universals. I have blown fuses before and have blown tweeters that were not fused. Trust me, add fuses. I just did a repair on a friend's tweeters that blew a tweeter from feedback. You never know when it is going to happen. There is also a notch filter for the A's that is easy to add that takes care of a hump at 9khz (either from the driver or the horn, its been a while). I don't have the schematics handy, but a search should find it.
  20. How did you find this on Amazon? I can't seem to find this section without using this link.
  21. Not at all. These are both recordings from live accoustic shows. Its only Jacson Browne, an accoustic guitar and a piano. No band. The recording is very good for a live show. These are nice CD's where you just put them in, hit PLAY, and sit back and enjoy. Well worth it in my opinion.
  22. These are both really good CD's. Just Jackson with a piano or his guitar. Very well recorded and his voice is just great. If you like unplugged or accoustic get these. I really like his music.
