  1. B&W Signature 800's...because I just bought a pair. "Conclusion The B&W Signature 800 is a great speaker—perhaps the best I've ever heard at home..." http://www.stereophile.com/floorloudspeakers/600/ At CES 2008 the Wilson WP8's were outstanding, but with about $100,000 of front end gear and they are almost $30,000 a pair. The Revel Saloon's, at about the $18,000 price were a definite standout, even among much more expensive speakers. My B&W N801's get my vote too. They have the qualities that everyone raves about in the Tecktons, but can go loud and dynamic without breaking up. It took a lot of equipment changes to get them to this point.
  2. Do you have a drawing or an equation (or both)?
  3. Musicians friend has the SL 1210 MK2 (1200 in black) for sale for $399 shipped plus another $35 off until March 4th (storewide instant rebate). I just ordered one last Thursday.
  4. What would it take: Bryston, Classe, Levinson, McIntosh, Krell, Pass. I lent my Musical Fidelity and Bryston gear to al all tube friend. His tubes are brighter (per him). I borrowed his Jolida JD1000 tube integrated. It sounds great, but the SS sounded better. On poorly recorded material the tubes do better but the detail is missing. Its all preference. I do agree that the Panasonic has faults in soundstaging compared to high end components, but its 200 bucks. What do you expect?
  5. Nice job but take the Dayton's out. You generally want to bypass cheap caps with better ones, not the other way around. I just rebuilt a pair of crossovers in some 20 year old B&W's and the factory installed caps were close to the values in the schematic, but not that close. the 1.8's should be fine. If you want some high quality caps that are relatively inexpensive, try Clarity Caps. Research them on Tony Gee's site.
  6. Yea, don't buy stuff if there are a bunch of them for sale. Must be defective...
  7. I have been out of this for a while but lately have been thinkign about putting together my K Horns. What is the K402/K69? I have seen pictures of the huge horn on top of the Jubilee. What is the expasion of the horn (Tractix - looks too big) and frequency rage? Same for the K69 driver?
  8. I was at a friend's house last weekend and he had an Adcom amp running his B&W Matrix 801's while his VTL's are in the shop. Bright, bright, bright and edgy, and this was with a VTL tube preamp. We replaced it with my Musical Fidelity preamp and Bryston 7B ST's monoblocks and it still sounded harsh, until they warmed up... then a whole different ball game. It all depends on what you are using. Tubes work great with Klipsch, so do digital amps and many SS units (QSC comes to mind).
  9. Cotton, I have a loaner Jolida JD 1000 amp driving a small pair of B&W's right now. Nice amp. It is owned by a friend and I have the option to buy it later if I choose when I build my K Horn project (that has been on the shelf for two years...). If it all works well I may keep this as a tube system. The JD 1000 is the older model that has the flat front and no remote. Does Jolida sell (or can you obtain) the remote and volume control / input selector from a JD 1000 RC so that I can make this amp a remote control model? Even better, how about the chasis from a new JD 1000 RC. That is one beautiful unit and I would not mind swapping the guts.
  10. Thansk Dean, this is the info that I need. I'l lspend a few extra bucks to make it easier to work with. The Cardas is actually less expensive than the WTB. WTB is $50 for 1/2 lb, the Cardas is $70 for a full lb. I need to replace a blown tweeter in my friend's B&W Matrix 801 (luckily the part is only $40 - the current diamond one is $1200). I called their engineers and they told me that they just use "plain old solder." Are we all just being too anal?
  11. Which silver solder do you guys use? The WTB is about $50 per 1/2 lb and the Dayton is $30. Though it looks like you may get what you pay for. The WTB melts at 356 degrees and the Dayton melts at 423 degrees. I just want to know if the WTB is teh way to go? http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?webpage_id=3&SO=2&CATID=38&ObjectGroup_ID=361 Thanks.
  12. You mentioned the tractrix horn, why not just build one that goes down to 350 hz? They are relatively compact.
  13. I kno wthat klipsch is located in Hope. Can anyone here direct me to a company that can crate and ship two large heavy objects that are fragile (26" x 18" x 47" high - 275 lb each)?
  14. That was really interesting. How much are those tubes? With that much labor they must be a fortune. I really like the guy wearing a blazer as he runs the mill. Very French.
  15. Ok, so if one wanted to build a Tractrix horn to use with a K Horn bass bin and a JBL 2470 driver, what should one do? I will be using JBL 2404 tweeters. I have the spreadsheet off of the Volvotreeter website, but need to know if the equation needs to be modified. Next question, what height to width ratio is preferred? I do not need to fit the horns into anything so I can use whatever specs work best.
  16. I'd say that they are worth the $3,000 if he thows in the little statues, air freshener and Ipod with docking station...
  17. Don't wait any longer to check out the DVD. The Neil Young LIve at Massey Hall 1971 CD sounds pretty good, but the DVD that came with it is stunningly good! If all the bandwidth isn't wasted on large amounts of video content, there's room for really excellent sound. Maybe JT's DVD is one of those cases. The recording of the actual instruments sounds good, its just that the mastering is terrible. A big smear of everything between the speakers. I'll check out the DVD when I get a chance.
  18. My wife and I went to see James Taylor's One Man Band show a few months back and really enjoyed it. Highly recommended show. I was at Starbucks yesterday and picked up the CD and could not wait to hear it. His voice and the instruments are all first rate, but the mastering is just terrible. All of the instruments and his voice are "stacked" in the middle of the soundstage. I'd swear this is in mono. No separation at all and really tough to listen to when you are used to a great soundstage. The package came with a DVD but I do not have any high hopes for it.
  19. A3 CD Player http://buy.audiogon.com/cgia/cls.pl?dgtlplay&1204141131 I have their A308CR CD player. Way better than the AH! 4000 tubed player that is replaced (upsampled, every option, Amperex PQ white label tubes). Or, sell your preamp and get one of these: http://buy.audiogon.com/cgia/cls.pl?preatran&1205109201 I have one in my office. Outstanding preamp, CD and DAC in one box.
  20. From what I am reading, if you like your fully horn loaded speakers, you will probably like the P39's. The reviewers are saying that they are very dynamic and powerful, like the older horn designs. Come on everyone, drop the Jubilee vs P39 debate and all Klipsch-o-philes unite against other brands. It has to happen eventually anyway. The debate will turn to dynamics vs the british sound.
  21. Uh, look at this: http://neighborhoods.ebay.com/audiophiles I don't know if they did their research...
  22. Zbullett, I sent you an email about your project. Chris
