  1. I'm not down on them at all....I have a set of series VI that sound great in my home office. My home office is 9X11 in size with a large roll top desk and a small equipment rack in them. The only speakers that sound any good in the office is the 901's. Mainly because I can sit them on each side of the top of my roll top desk and let the top half of the room seet the sound stage. For large ventues, I would go with 802's elevated about 8ft off the floor along with some bass bins. Uh, yea... It was a joke. B&W makes Nautilus 801's, not Bose.
  2. I have a pair of their Nautilus 801's in my main system. They are great speakers. Why are you guys so down on these?
  3. That's why I posted the DV50. A friend has one. They can be had for $2250 or so. I have a Philips 963 SA with the blackgate mod that has been sitting for a year. Box, manual, etc I can be convinced to part with it. A great player.
  4. ajsons, You had asked about access to the driver. Build the enclosure so that the bass bin slides in to it. I.e. it should have a top and a bottom. Build teh grills so that they are removable (of course). Then the bass bin should just slide in to the structure. Attach the bass bin to the horn with L brackets on the top and bottom. This is how I made my old false corners and it worked very well. It will take a little work to remove the woofer, but how often to you need to do that anyway? My hard drive crashed and I think that I lost my AutoCAD file of the flare. I had designed it so that it had a constant flare rate through the bend. Do you happen to have the old drawing? I'd really like to see this finished. I've been sidetracked for a while. This should have a beautiful look. It shoudl look just like teh picture of PWK next to the Jub with the wood horn on the top. In going through this thread, I see that you expect a higher response on the top end. What response to you expect? I have a pair of JBL 2470's that should work fine with the stock K Horn bin, but it would be nice to cross it over higher. This should be interesting to see through to completion.
  5. Check out the rest of the snake oil this bozo is selling.
  6. Oscar, I have a friend who is looking at a TriVista DAC for his music server. HAve you compared it to any other DAC's? He really liked my Benchmark DAC1. The Musical Fidelity A3.24 is a real bargain. It was Stereophile Class A (for what that is worth). My friend is a tube guy and that is why he was interested in the Tri Vista. Mike, I just received a CD Pre 24 yesterday for my office system. It is a true high end unit. The sound is so good and a hugh improvement over the receiver that I was using. I have it hooked to my computer using a $30 Behringer UBS interface and stream Jango and Pandora interent radio to it. It really makes teh work day much better. http://www.zzounds.com/item--BEHUCA202
  7. Armando, I still have the K Horn bass bin clones, JBL 2470 midrange driver, JBL Baby cheek tweeters and Yamaha D2040 professional active crossover. It is all in storage (and for sale if anyone is interested). Are you looking for a thread that was posted?
  8. Its interesting to see the match to Teac. I have two of them in storage. Have you had any experience with the Panasonic SA XR digital receivers? I bought two of them and have been usign them regularly.
  9. The title says it all. I have Musical Fidelity in my main system and now in my office system. I couldn't be happy enough with it. Just wondering if anyone else is using their stuff. I never hear much about their equipment around here. I would think that something like their A3 or A300 series (arounf 2000 to 2002 vintage) integrated amos would drive horns very well for a decent price.
  10. If this is not the intent of your question, I'm sorry. A speaker does not have "wattage." A speaker is rated to handle a certain amount of power. However, it is easier to ruin a speaker by using a less powerful amp than a more powerful one. This is because you want undistorted power going to a speaker. The $30 Sony's are worth just that. If you are going low buck, buy something that was more when new. Ie. a $300 pair of speakers for $75 used is much better than a $75 pair of new speakers (generally).
  11. Thanks Bob. Does the top of the receiver on the left side of the vent get warm when it is in use? This is just above the heat sink that i sinside of the receiver.
  12. I love Musical Fidelity gear. I have one of their preamps and a cd player. I also have a CD Pre on the way for my office. Have you checked out AudioGon? Their used stuff is not that expensive (at least compared to new).
  13. I have a Panasonic Sa XR55 receiver. When in standby mode, the power supply makes a buzzing sound. Is this normal? I also have an SA XR25 and I don't remember its power supply buzzing. The XR55 also gets a little warm while running it (just above the heat sink). I am driving a pair of 6 ohm speakers at moderat elevels. Any advice is apperciated.
  14. For small speakers I use a pair of ERA design 5's for my office. They are great little speakers, image like crazy and have such a sweet midrange. http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrmoni&1201979806 http://www.upscaleaudio.com/updates/era.htm I listen for about 8 hours a day and big speakers will not fit on my desk. I was going to buy B&W N805's, but they would not fit on my desk and these were significantly less expensive (and don't look out of proportion on my desk).
  15. Craig, Are you still running a Margules ADE on your computer server? You mentioned this unit a few years ago. I am thinking of selling mine and was wondering if you can share your experience with it. Thanks, Chris
  16. I don't mind the $10 per month for XM, but I keep hearing that the sound quality isn't that good. I am at a desk all day and have music on the entire time. The local channels are OK, but teh commercials are annoying. I was readign that XM also has commericals. Is this true? The HD radio option appears ot be the Sangean with digital out. As far as satellite, I want somehting that I can use in my car (mosy likely with an FM modulator) and use in my office system. The office system will require a digital output.
  17. I am interested in HD radio. I was looking at the attached tuner (with digital out): http://cgi.ebay.com/SANGEAN-HDT-1X-AM-FM-Tuner-w-HD-radio-NIB_W0QQitemZ140164616096QQihZ004QQcategoryZ3282QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem Here is a listing of the HD broadcasts here in Las Vegas: http://www.december.com/places/lv/radiodialhd.html I realize that this is not going to be audiophile quality, but is it decent? I listen to the radio all day at work and would like to upgrade a little.
  18. The third wire is labeled as a ground. The owners manaul shows a 3 wire antenna.
  19. Mallette, The Panasonic antenna has 2 wires and then a third ground. I tried using a loop of wire and even took an AM antenna from a different tuner and the reception was terrible. I think that I need a 3 wire antenna, but I don't know where the third wire hooks up. I love the Panasonic. I have an XR55 and an XR25. Great units. I actually should sell one of them if anyone is interested (but I am missing the AM antennas). Digital amps are sweet. Chris
  20. Does anyoen have a 3 wire AM loop antenna? I bought a receiver on ebay and it was missing the AM antenna. It is a 3 wire antenna for use with a Panasonic SA XR55. I can't get a talk show that I like. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Chris
  21. Aaron Lewis has a great voice and can play. The solo act is outstanding if the trash would have just shut up. We had such good seats too. It was painful.
  22. I thought that this would be like the Yes show. It got to the point that between songs he just looked up, shook his head, and then played the next song. It was somehting like $140 or $150 for the tickets. What a waste of time and money. We are working on our exit strategy. This city is not worth it anymore.
  23. My wife and I went to see Aaron Lewis of Staind perform an accoustic show last night at the House of Blues in Las Vegas (Mandalay Bay). If you don't know who he is, Staind was an alternative rock band that did an MTV unplugged show. The unplugged show was so good that Aaron Lewis now does a solo tour. Just him and an accoustic guitar. I was really excited to go and bought floor seats (about the 12th row). The sound system was fine, not too loud and you should have been able to hear every note. The House of Blues had opened bars during the show. After he did his first song he asked the crowd if he was interrupting their conversations. He tried to explain that this was supposed to be an intimate setting. Instead of being quiet they responded f--- you and booed. Now, I paid to see him perform but apparently about 1/2 of the people were there to drink and talk and try to gey laid while some guy on the stage with a guitar played. It was just plain painful. He tried to play with emotion and the talking just didn't stop. Remember, this was a guy with an accoustic guitar. I could barely hear his singing over the talking. He was singing a song about his little girl that was soft and mellow and durring the whole song every drunk trashy Las Vegas skank kept yelling "whoh hoo" over and over, plus the constant talking in the background. Aaron Lewis then commented that the crowd was "testy." You could see that the man enjoyed the emotion and connection of the accoustic show and that it just wasn't happening. He just kept plowing forward painfully. Every once in a while you could hear somneone in the crowd yell "Shut the f--- up to the people who were talking. My wife and I finally walked out. We just could not hear the music at all. I complained to someone in security and she said "someone is talking on the floor?" This was on the way out where we could not even hear the music at all, just the trashy crowd talking and yelling. My response was "You can't hear the crowd talking?" I spoke to someone at the box office who directed me to the "boss" who explained "man, we got him here and got him to sing, we can do nothing about the crowd. That's all you get" I guess I bothered her, I'm sure that she needed to do something important like another line of coke. I bought tickets to James Taylor that are also up really close. I was excited to go until yesterday. It is at a different venue at the Mandalay Bay. I really hope that they do not screw this one up too. In case any of you are not familiar with out fair city, Las Vegas is a disguisting combination of desert wasteland and heat that is full of trashy people. Everyone here is financed up to their eyeballs to drive a fancy car and afford plastic surgery. But then again, if you don't live in a $1,000,000 house you live in a scary neighborhood, and even then, once you leave the gates of your neighborhood, you are back in the wasteland of drug addicts and trash. Last night was the last straw. We have to leave. We went hiking a few weeks ago in the one nice place here, Mount Charleston, and someone left beer cans and bottles at the end of the trail and spray painted the canyon walls with graffitti. Sorry to ramble but I have lived here for 17 years and it hurts that I know that I have to leave.
  24. Not you Kev. Look at threads from about 2002 or so. Lots of pontification.
