  1. Current us weird. I don't doubt that different cable in different configurations may change something, but whether that something can be heard has to be proven. You wouldn't buy an expensive car unnecessarily unless you could observe it's value. Same is true with any audio component, even wire (interconnect$). IT guys help here: I know that finished network cabling has to be approved to meet standards for speed. Every time you turn or twist cable, you can change it's conductivity and the quality of wire counts in the effectiveness of data transfer. But how that plays into audio, analog vs. digital, well, if you can't hear it, how will you know?
  2. A dedicated line will not isolate interference from other sources in your home. I have a dedicated circuit for three outlets for my audio equipment. I obviously did not do my homework. For example, have you ever lived in an apartment where your niighbor is running something electronic and you see the interference on your tv? I don't know if that is the best example, but you need to clean up the power from the wall. Some products convert AC to DC to AC. That is best done with something like products from PS Audio. Expensive, yes. Maybe some of the Monster line will help as well. Take a look at this: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_9_3/exact-power-ep15-7-2002.html for something interesting. I don't use one of these - I can't afford one. Secondly, when I refinished my basement and was at the bare drywall stage (double thickness - TWO sheets of drywall, by the way), it was the deadest room I had ever heard. Then [] I painted. Aesthetics aside, I wish I could have left the drywall unpainted. The hard, nonporous painted surface was the downfall from studio-like sound. Now the wife would have never gone for bare sheetrock but someday...

  4. Your patience has been rewarded. Craftsmanship counts fo 90% of the grade, as I remember from art classes. You get an A.
  5. Reminds me of a "guy" line. Christmas list: Fiber bad, electronics GOOD!
  6. I think it is overpriced. For $150, you can probably do better. Do you just want a good TT or a finer tool? I am always on the prowl for good TTs.
  7. So WHO said that men fear commitment? Altec horn's midrange (especially on vocals) is legendary. And when those vocals are Krall's, well,...
  8. I just like good music. And, with a voice like that, even I could like opera. Thanks, Max.
  9. Just sold something on CL and the buyer wanted me to sign a bill of sale. I simply (maybe stupidly) replied, "This is craigslist. I can sell it for twice that on Ebay." He easily conceded and took the item. He said that he just wanted it in the event of a fire, etc. Is there any legal ramification other than what he stated? I don't want to look like a jerk but I also don't want to be dragged into court either. WWBD What would Brasky do?
  10. This is partly why I laughed out loud. This is what Friday is for! "Never (fill in the blank) While Drunk." Oh, the list could go on and on.
  11. Oh, I thought this was a thread about two turntables squaring off.
  12. You nailed it right there. You know what you want and you hunt from the comfort of your chair. With agile dexterity, you lock in your bid with the same passion of a hunter who has his prey in his scope who, with elevated heartbeat, squeezes the trigger, taking down his target. The hunt is over for today and now you wait to find out how the meat will taste. No matter if it is choice or bland, it will not compare to the exhilaration of the hunt itself. You have won and that is all that matters. The story around the coffee klatch will make you the mench. While in their caffeine-heightened state, others will be mesmerized by your tale of man vs cybermachine. They want to see/hear about the takedown. Cost is not the issue. YOU were willing. I say, "Way to go!" I knew you had it in you. Next time, you won't be as timid, as reserved, as analytical. Now you can measure what you see in your scope with experience. You are now a prototype for others to emulate but those "others" will never equal the experimental one who took risk on the chin and weighed reward to the risk, defying sensitivities to passivity and humanness.
  13. Why is that linked screen so W I D E ? Not all of us are using cinema ratio monitors.
  14. I'm not trying to pound your post into the ground, but if you came home with one of these, you'd be humming a different tune. In the DC metro area, there are quite a few thrifts and one close to my office yielded this thing some call a receiver. It's more like an amp/pre/tuner because it must weigh about 50 pounds—the sum of all three as separates. And there's something about listening to an oldies station on one of these that I cannot put into words. I now understand the mid-century decor with STEREO craze a little better. I have been told by others that their areas just don't have the demographics to support donations like this. I completely understand because I have seen a few of those first hand. So that may be your case, CT. It can be a fun hobby/diversion/whatever-you-call-it. I never would have bought one of these off Ebay for this price and that just makes it fun for me. Same is true for others here as well, I assume.
  15. Cut Throat, I wonder what your conclusion would have been if chance had been in your favor and you had found a gem on your first visit to the local thrift. Regardless, the more you dissuade from going to those stores, the better for us bottomfeeders. Thanks!
  16. It IS the thrill of the hunt. Nothing more. Some are luckier because they are probably ALWAYS in those stores. But when you get lucky, it is fun.
  17. What's with the muted colors? Did they consult with Martha Stewart? I am scrolling more vertically now, not horizontally. Say, Klipsch, the standard is still 800x600, I think. I am at 1024 x 768 on a 19" display so I'm okay, but my laptop may be different. Audiokarma is still way better (and doesn't crash - I wanted to insert a smiley but the popup window with the smiley icons won't open large enough to show them all, so I just skipped being cutesy for once).
  18. Holland? We drive north of there. I think it was 2002 or 2003 when we left a couple of days after Christmas early enough to get a call from the in-laws that they got dumped on. We only missed it by a couple of hours. I used to like snow.
  19. Sounds fine to me. I will be driving to the Big Puddle (pinky knucle) on US31. That road and the dogleg over to Grand Rapids can be a slick, ugly bear of a drive.
  20. Corns in that room size will give a wall of sound, that's about all. Studio jazz at low volumes may sound good and intimate, but only at low volumes. But then, GaryMD has Khorns in a room about that size. So who am I to throw judge? I know that Corns in my room of about 15x15 were just overpowering and imaged zilch. I like imaging and staging, so I stuck with my studio monitors (different brand) for the time being. But, if I had a pair at a good bargain, I'd go for it and maybe use them as stands for some studio monitors, as long as you lay the Corns on the long side. []
