  1. The world has been a more interesting and exciting place because of David Hafler. Life is so good!

  3. Congrats Chunga! 350 miles is a piece of cake for a Khorn pickup. Also, cool that your wife is making the trip too. I sure enjoy windshield time with my wife. Dee
  4. Garymd Congrats on getting Craig's rebuild. You are going to love it! I had no idea how sweet tubes would sound. In fact, if you think your Kenwood sounds better, I want to hear your Kenwood! Dee
  5. Bob and Q-Man Thanks for the replies. Working on finishing the cabs this weekend. Hope to have the drivers loaded soon!
  6. John, I've got a brother in law and a buddy in Indy, who want to come over for the tour on the 21st. Sorry to say that I won't be able to get there because of a responsibility on Sunday. Would you mind to repost some info for when and where local guys should show up! Thanks. Dee p.s. as I've looked back over the board posts, wow, this trip has been in the works a long time!
  7. Al, Thanks for posting the article and also for leaving out the math, for me at least. I've got the article printed out for my engineer brother in law and another engineer buddy who are staying over the holiday weekend. Yesterday I had your web page material from the ALK crossover network awaiting their perusal at the breakfast table along with the crossovers themselves. They are impressed. We have been working on the La Scala buildup over the weekend, and are still finishing the cabs. They look really good, too. I'll post pics when finished. Hopefully we can get the horns installed before they go. Sorry to hear about the publishers snafu, but your posting is sincerely appreciated. Dee
  8. Hi Butch, Welcome to the forum. I'm definitely impressed that a man with time on his hands would build a pair of Klipschorns. Hope you will post a pic of your project. You could build a pair Klipschorn cabs for for me! I'd love to finish them out. Just let me know what you'd want for the project! Dee p.s. Did you swap out all the drivers and crossovers from your La Scala's? What crossover?
  9. A week or so ago I ran across a post on this forum which had a URL to a guy in Canada (personal/family type website) who sold tubes. Looked over his website and he seemed to have quite of bit of info on tubes. Anyway, thought I had bookmarked it, but cannot find it. Also, have browsed quite a few posts on the forum and have not been able to locate the original post. Any help would be appreciated. DaddyDee
  10. I'm getting things together for a La Scala assembly project and have been looking at the way the woofer is connected to the crossover through the top of the bass bin. In the 1977 La Scala there is a barrier strip on the floor of the horn enclosure to receive the spade lugged ended wires from the crossover. On the ceiling of the bass bin there is what looks like machine screw ends with nuts and washers to receive the spade lugged wires from the woofer. Now the questions: Are La Scala's of all years of construction the same on this point? I'm supposing that instead of using wood screws to attach the barrier strip, that a machine screw is inserted through the top of the bass bin and then the the woofer leads attached to that, but that would require a jumper to connect with the top side. Aside from not duplicating the Klipsch factory method out of the honor of the thing, what are the downsides to simply running the wires through a drilled hole and sealing with silicon? Appreciate any experience and thoughts shared. DaddyDee
  11. I *LOVE* the La Scala, I think it is one of the most alive sounding, and most emotional, speakers I have ever had the pleasure of owning / hearing. However, ignoring the fact that she simply cannot produce any bass whatsoever and trying to make do without a subwoofer is stupid. If you listen to any music that has any real bass content, you simply *MUST* have a subwoofer if you're using La Scalas or Belles. ---------------- Ray, I've been wondering about adding a sub for my La Scalas, and would appreciate hearing your take on some good sub candidates. Also, what's got good bang for the buck! Dee
  12. Congrats!!! Marriage is a wonderful institution.... ....as long as you don't mind spending the rest of your life in an institution!!! My wife and I will celebrate 23 in 3 weeks! Dee
  13. Greg, I've had good luck with Craters and Freighters shipping a couple of pair of La Scalas. They have a shipping calculator on their website, which has come out about $100 or more higher than the actual cost quoted by a live person on E-mail. For $25 they will pick up the speakers at your house, then pack on pallets and ship on a truck line. I would guess they could ship the distance you mentioned in the ball park of $500. Pickup, packing, insurance, shipping, delivery. Turn key. They know their stuff and do it professionally. Dee
  14. Tony, I've been a Hafler user since 1980 when I first got a DH200 that had been kit built. A DH220 in 1984 and early this year a 9505. Not too long after that got a pair of 1977 La Scalas and thought they sounded harsh with the Haflers. I've read about musical concepts on the net, and the reviews sound impressive, but for my ears, I was disappointed with the sound of my La Scalas until I was running them with a NOSValves 299b rebuild. The sweet sound has been a welcome and wonderful surprise. I am amazed at how much more I enjoy listening to music now. There are really not words to describe the difference. Dealing with Craig was a good way for me, a nervous newbie to jump into tubes. I just didn't know enough about tubes to be comfortable without the confidence in somebody that would treat you right and for fairly priced equipment. Craig is even available for hand holding to get you through stuff. Thats my $.02. Dee p.s. just sold my 9505 on Audiogon

My God they sound good. ---------------- Lynn, I'm not sure what you were listening to before the Khorns. Would you mind to share your initial impressions in contrast? As one on the search for the right Khorns, and wondering, "just how much better than La Scalas could they be?" ...sure would appreciate to hear your take on it. Thanks and again, congrats on getting your Khorns home w/o damaging the speakers or the seller! Dee
  16. Congrats! They sound that good? For now I'll just have to trust you on that one! Dee

And I open up the case and I`ll be damn if there`s not a green etch around the very edge of the thing. I have read where this reduces the disc from wobbling, or for lack of a better word, jittering. I mean this is an ugly habit and I hope that no one is going to tell me I have to start sketching on my CD`s to make them sound better. Does anyone out there mark on their discs or was this just a fad that has come and gone? No sleep for the curious. ---------------- Well, here's a link to get a disk mat which will accomplish the same thing. Yep, Yep, Yep. It's an accessory available on the Ah! Njoe Tjoeb U.S. Distributor's website. I'd never heard of it before seeing that link. http://www.upscaleaudio.com/demat.htm
  18. Have just about got all the elements assembled for a La Scala rebuild project, including some nice ALK crossovers which FedEx is to bring tomorrow! Probably a week or more until I have a chance to come up for air at work, and then will get together with my brother in law for some garage time work with the scalas. I've got several questions I'm wondering about. 1. I've read several posts about folks rewiring between the speaker drivers to the crossover. What size and type of wire would be optimal for this? 2. Also, any advice on how to mount the horns square on the back of the motorboard. The K-400 horn is so heavy, it looks to be challenging to get it properly aligned. I've got a new cab for this, so no old holes from the factory installation. 3. Would there be any advantages or disadvantages to mounting these drivers so that the horns flair on the front of the motorboard instead of the back. Appreciate any advisement here. Thanks. DaddyDee p.s. When I get things together, I'll post some pics.
  19. John, Thanks for posting the pics. Cool. Esp. PWK's autograph. As for the full grills, they sure do look like Cornwalls! My father, rest his soul, would have declared: "That's as cute as a monkey's a$$, neat, but not gawdy!" Looking forward to your "after" pictures when you get the finishing project done. Regards, Dee

Looks like a great match to the cab. Also, is your grill cloth stapled on, or removable? thanks. Dee

Over the years they turned a kind of unattractive yellow. They also had water stains (potted plants), paint overspray and various other blemishes on them. I bleached and sanded the heck out of them. Then had them professionally stained and satin finished for $60 each. Before the refinishing they would have been about a 4 as far as looks go, and after about a 9+. You can see them by clicking the link below. Regards, Chris ---------------- Chris, Man, your Cornwalls look awesome! Do you recall the color of stain that the refinishers used? I've got a La Scala refinishing project and wondering what I would do for stain. Also, is your finish polyurethane? Appreciate your thoughts. Dee
  22. Some years ago my wife told me that if we divorced, she was taking the stereo and leaving the kids with me. That was a sobering thought!
