  1. Thought this might be a good idea, since questions tend to pop up here and there regarding the Epic series speakers. Since the owners of the Epic series generally tend to hold on to them a long time, also thought it'd be nice to have a thread where we can swap info on setups, mods that we've done, problems/issues, or any other info that we've come across. Plus, it'll be interesting to see how many Epic owners are out there and active on the forum... All Epic owners owe Roy Delgado (Chief Bonehead) our thanks for designing these...he did a fantastic job! Below is the information directly from Klipsch on how to determine which of the 3 versions your CF-3/4 are. EPIC Series Production versions – Rev.1, Rev.2, Rev.3 Rev.1 – Start of Production in Spring of 1994 These models had 5" long port tubes Networks used OFC (monster cable looking) clear jacket wiring. Horns in these models were gray in color. Rev.2 – Fall of 1994 These models had shorter 2.5" long port tubes (to raise the box tuning) Networks had a component / value change to correct for the new ports. (The network wire was still the OFC used in Rev.1.) Rev.3 – Summer of 1995 to end of production in 1996 These models had new lighter cone woofers (new vendor) (these cones aren’t nearly as stiff as the originals and can be deformed much easier by pressing on them) Networks were changed to compensate for the new woofers Change in network wiring to colored 16ga. like what is used in Legend KLF networks New horn material that was 20% glass and was painted black. Serial number decoding for EPIC Series models (or any Klipsch model made from 1990-1997(?)) Production Years Description Example 1990-1997(?) DOY Y2Y1 # # # # (135791234)
  2. Ok everyone.... I was listening to my ,new to me, CF4's and i was not hearing what most CF4 owners say is very good sound reproduction. So, i decided after emailing with Mike Crite, to send the crossovers to him to rebuild. I proceeded to open up the CF4's and found that my tweeters do not have the K-63-KN drivers on them (see pics). No wonder the sound was way off from what i would expect them to have. I know that original K-63-KN drivers are almost impossible to find.I have heard that Electro Voice DH1506 drivers work well in this situation. Does anyone have any experience with those EV drivers? Or does anyone have any other suggestions to create suitable audio output? I plan on keeping these CF4's if i can get the sound to meet their potential so being "all original" is not a huge issue for me understanding the driver availability issue. Thanks for any help, Neal
  3. Beautiful pair of Klipsch Epic CF-3's. Built the 234th day of 1994. Revision 2 version. They were completely refinished in a cabinet grade finish with multiple coats of polycrylic. No longer are they the boring black speakers they started out as! In addition, dampening material was added to the horn and outrigger feet were added (the spikes can unscrew for wood floors) as for some reason the feet to many old speakers mysteriously "walk off!" The front board was finished in textured paint. All drivers are original with no loose or pushed in dust caps or damaged surrounds. The speaker grills are in near perfect condition. I'm asking $800. I priced them way lower than any similar CF3's I could find online. Plus, these are much nicer! I will not ship as I have many hours of labor into refinishing these speakers and I don't want to see them destroyed in the shipping process. I am in the southwest burbs of Chicago near Naperville. You really must see these in person as the pictures do not do them justice. They are one of a kind and beautiful. I will be able to audition them for you safely in my garage. Please message me with any specific questions or if you want additional pictures. Also, you can check CL or US Audio Mart for more pics.
  4. Hoping someone who's owned Epic CF-2 or other Epic series speakers can help - I picked up a pair of Epic CF-2 speakers this week but they don't sound so great. I would have failed them at the demo but thought the space might have had something to do with dissipating bass (1,500 sq. ft. garage with bay doors wide open). What don't I like? Simply put, they aren't nearly as musical as the pair of KG 3.5 I bought two weeks ago. The highs are decent, but mid range and bass are both muddy and poorly defined. The KG 3.5's playing Eva Cassidy "Live at Blues Alley" blow them in detail - and they're not even that detailed! So, what gives - is it possible this is a bum pair and need crossovers replaced? Or is the KG series more musical, more natural-sounding? Is it too much to ask for CF-2's to handle 2-channel duty; are they better as rear surrounds above 80 Hz? Any help would be appreciated - thanks! --Scott O.
  5. For your consideration I am offering a pair of rare E pic CF-3 vs3 speakers. These are in great condition, all original with consecutive serial numbers. These were my dads, he was a huge audiophile who only bought the best! Local pick up in St Louis, MO. Sorry these are not available for shipping. I am asking $575 for the pair, accepting offers! Please feel free to ask for more details or photos. Thanks to everyone for all the help!!
  6. I found a pair of CF3s, version 1 on shopgoodwill.com. When I hooked them up I found that one of the tweeters crackles at any dB level. I pulled the horn out and detached the driver but couldn’t tell anything from looking at it. The diaphragm looked good and I couldn’t see any damage to the cone, though it is really hard to see anything. Any thoughts? Any way to fix or replace it? This is my first foray into Klipsch and high quality audio so your help is appreciated
  7. Time to sell my KV-4 - it is in good working order - there are a couple of small nicks on the back corners of the cabinet and the front grill has a small crack in it and a small discolored spot. Looks good - but it is not in mint condition. Really would prefer local pick-up. Thanks!
  8. Looks like a local pickup in FL. Nice condition. https://www.ebay.com/itm/CF4-epic-series-klipsch-floor-standing-speakers/273100275416?hash=item3f960b7ed8:g:nNsAAOSwDqlaoJcK https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/nNsAAOSwDqlaoJcK/s-l1600.jpg
  9. Short version; CF-4 needs tweeter diaphragm or driver replaced. My usual snails pace, over the last three days I finally shuffled around our living room and parked my Forte's and hooked up the set of Epic CF-4 speakers I bought about a year ago. These are freaking heavy speakers, 108 lbs each, much grunting and groaning, finally hit play and ..... one tweeter isn't working. OTOH seems like the other 5 drivers are fine, but a bit more checking is on the table before I do anything. Not fair to compare with one bad tweeter, but the sound is VERY different from my Forte speakers. Anybody has a spare tweeter driver that is known good, I will either buy or send mine off to Crites for repair. I may do that regardless, but I am also considering use of EV DH1506. Kicking myself on the EV as there was a pair local to me for $75 and I was too busy to go buy them. I always like to get a good item back to proper stock operation condition before making any changes, but I do have the usual list of mods at the back of my mind. These are not the first version, info I think is in my sig. Ultimately they will be used with a subwoofer with the mains high passed no lower than 60 hz, so the ports may not matter.
  10. somebody buy these, i just bought a pair from Orlando, denver would have saved almost half the shipping.ggggg or, if one of you is driving through denver to say seattle, pick them uo for me will ya? help a brother out... https://denver.craigslist.org/ele/6071567616.html
  11. Well, one of my cf-3 woofers has a bad voice coil i believe, it is not the dust cap because it does it with the dust cap off, the spider is in good shape and not loose any where... So that too me seems to lead to a voice coil... Please let me know if you have a spare woofer you would like to sell or if you know of a place that has them. Thanks
  12. Excellent condition. Sounds amazing. Selling this center since it does not match up with my RF7IIs SOLD Local pickup in Southbury, CT
  13. They look legit, and pretty nice. Not mine, of course. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/ele/5911212524.html I have a set of these, already, and I love them. The seller is inflating some of the specs, here. And I'm not sure about that price.
  14. Pair of Cherry CF4's just popped up in Minneapolis for $700. I haven't contacted the guy to see if they're there but it's worth a shot. If anyone gets them, just curious to what version they are. https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/eld/5891593430.html

  16. Updated price Set of Epic CF-3 Version 1. I need to make space. Sold These sound incredible. One of the cabinets has a long scratch in the veneer on the side of the speaker. I have this facing towards my wall so you can't see it. The speakers have their grills and badges. This would have to be local pickup in Southbury, CT.
  17. Howdy, folks. For the longest time, I had stereo in my bedroom/office for music, and surround sound in my living room for TV and movies. But I've always wanted to have a good music system in the living room, too, where I'm not forced to use something more geared to near-field listening. However, my Pioneer Elite VSX-84tsxi, a great home theatre receiver, is less accomplished in stereo mode. So I was forced to set up a separate system. In my quest to populate it, I fell in love with the Epic line, specifically the version 1 CF-4, resulting in the crowded photo, seen above. I paired them with all sorts of amps/receivers, ranging from the late 1970s to the early 2010s, and they all fell short of expectations. So, after a lot of research, I finally bought a lightly used Peachtree Audio iNova integrated amplifier. It sounds amazing! Plus, one of its aux inputs has a bypass circuit so it can be integrated into a home theatre! A few years ago, the wall in the accompanying photo was a lot less crowded. I can now remove the Polk Monitor70 mkIIs (the ones cowering between the Epics and the TV). However, I bought the CS2 center channel because it's “voice matched” to the 70s. I know the best center channel replacement to go with my CF-4s would be the hard-to-find KV-4. Any decent alternatives? The KV-3? Something more recent, like the RP-25C or RP-250C?
  18. Hello all! I have a set of CF4 version 2 with the 2.5" ports. I've been searching around the forum for a while now and it sounds like the ports are easily swappable (which I can confirm by just pulling one out). My question is, what have you guys been putting back in that's longer? I've found some different sized ports online, but nothing is standard. Was curious if someone else had success with any one certain product. If not I was looking into extending with custom PVC or the like. Best
  19. I have a pair of Epic speakers in need of touch-up paint. Any thoughts specifically for the MDF front face, which appears to be somewhere between flat and semi-glass black? What about for the black veneer on the top and sides? Thx, --Scott
  20. I wish I could go get these, even with black satin finish. Alas, he wants cash only, and I can't make the drive down from D.C. Oh well... http://miami.craigslist.org/mdc/ele/5489419469.html
  21. I'm new here, so bear with me if I'm posting in the wrong place or the wrong way. I recently bought a pair of Epic CF-4s and after about two weeks of pure bliss (man, these are nice speakers), one of my woofers started rubbing. I'm desperately looking to buy a replacement (K-30-KN) woofer. Or, if anyone has found a place that can recone these speakers, please let me know.
  22. Greetings all. First post for a long time lurker. On the 29th of January, I purchased a set of V1 CF3's. I absolutely love the sound of these speakers. As many have stated, they truly do it all. After some spirited listening, I noticed an annoying rattle/vibration. Upon further inspection, I discovered that the adhesive has let go on 3 of the 4 dust caps. The previous owner was a smoker and I figure this contributed to their failure. Does anyone have a recommendation for a suitable replacement? I measure them to be just under 4 inches and the only vendor I find selling a 4" poly dust cap is PartsExpress. http://www.parts-express.com/4-poly-speaker-dust-cap--260-383 Can anyone confirm if this would be suitable? The picture doesnt look very appealing and the description states that it's primarily used on 12-15" woofers. Seeing how these are 10's, I am looking for a vote of confidence that this is the correct solution to my problem. As soon as I figure out how to post pics, I will showoff my newly acquired gems. Thank you in advance to any who reply
  23. Edit: The auction ended early, and they apparently sold for the $899. Now we know at least what a pair of good condition CF-4 ver 1's are worth. +++ +++ +++ These are not mine, but the ad says all the right things; Version 1, pristine condition, XO inspected and brought up to spec by Bob Crites. The $899 Buy It Now price isn't outrageous. Berwyn, Illinois, I don't know where that is. Let's see if this sale reflects what many of us think the CF-1 ver 1 should bring. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Klipsch-Epic-CF4-Loudspeakers-Ver-1-/251809614111?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3aa105c91f (I am not affiliated)
  24. I'm looking to upgrade to some newer smaller stuff. I wheel and deal on eBay and thought and I may have a better chance finding buyers here. The cf3's are black and cosmetically in good shape for their age. The cf2's have no enclosure (except my custom one they are in now) but I do have all the parts including the damping material (volume of damping material can be installed as designed that way). The drivers are in great shape. The KV-4 center channel has the same horn as the cf2's. It is in good condition as well. I'm doing some photographing this weekend so I can post the pictures soon.
