  1. I've been cleaning up a pair of Klipsch Quartet's that I'll be powering with my Amps & Sound Classic Wonder single ended 6B4G triode tube amp. The squawkers and tweeters both run too high in comparison to the woofers, and I'd like to reduce them by about 5dB. Currently I have a pair of Heresy II's that I'm using $89 ALK Engineering transformer tweeter attenuators (set a -5db). What value of resisters can I use to accomplish the exact same thing without spending $89 a set? Thanks, Mike
  2. I bought new crossovers from ALK Engineering. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in the stock crossovers from a C3? They're in like-new condition. They were use three or four year before I switched them out? I can't see any reason why they couldn't be used in a C1 or C2.
  3. I have dabbled in speaker design the better part of 40 years, I've found crossover design equal parts of math, quality components and black art. I loved my CW3's right out of the box, but quickly found high powered transistor amps and horns do not make a good mix. As nice as my McIntosh MA6600 is, I discovered it (200 watts) quickly over-drove the horns, luckily I kept my Luxman MB3045 mono block tube amps (45 watts), using the Mac as a pre-amp, that made all the difference in the world. Those who know me will tell you, I never leave well enough alone. Soon I started researching crossover networks and the name ALK Engineering kept popping up. After a few emails with Al I settled on a gentle slope woofer to squawker network (AP12-600) and an extreme slope squawker to, tweeter network (ES5800). Where I'm at: the attenuation that is right for quite music is too much midrange for loud music. I think the gentle slop is over lapping in the mid range too much. So do I take the plunge and get the ES600? (at $960) If I do, is there any market for a used AP12-600? (list is $350) I am entertaining offers and advice. Thank you in advance. - TT
  4. Greetings to all, as I am a new member on your community. I am writing to share my impressions after upgrading my WD Kel84, a 15W, push pull stereo intergraded amplifier with four El84 on the power amp. http://www.world-designs.co.uk/acatalog/kel84.pdf It was bought as a kit 14 years ago from World Audio Designs in UK. First years was a truly success, matching it with a pair of Klipsch RB-35, (8 ohms / 96dB). I still can remember the warm and detailed sound I had for the first time in my life. Then after some years of great listening I got married , so the amp wasn’t fitting well on the small apartment we rent for some years…. After 5 years that my Kel84 and RB-35 were sitting (well protected) on a basement, I decided to bring them back to life. I notice that my low frequencies were not so present and tide as the old days, so as the middle frequencies were a bit muddy. I decided then to replace the electrolytic capacitors on the power supply unit, with doubling their capacity to 220uF/450v for better stability. The tubes were from the original order from WD with not so many hours on their back. Also I change my cables (speaker and interconnects) with quality ones. These changes were for better of course, but did not achieve the sound I remember. So I decided to go for the XL Upgrade that the World Audio Designs still offering. That upgrade contains almost everything, except the transformers and the chassis, with audiofile components as said. From new improved PCB to high quality capacitors and wiring. After a succesfull (technically) upgrade, I have notice that the sound for sure it has changed in many ways. First I have more 'solid body' on sound and more tighten low frequencies with a 'booming' feeling some times. I used to have a lack of low frequencies. So far so good. The problem it concerns me is the 'muddy' picture on sound with an obvious lack in details, plus a noticeable roll off in high frequencies. My aesthetic feeling is that it gives me a very very sweet and tight, but seamless (lack in details) sound. In audition, things are satisfying in easy listening, like classical or smooth jazz piano trios, but when music becomes more complicated, like classical or jazz big bands things are getting really muddy. The same occures in Rythm and blues or Rock music. Just to mention that I had to use an EQ even for the easy listening part. Also to mention that the same feeling applies to all of my inputs (cd, pc, turntable). As far I am aware, when we talk about 'roll off or cut off in high frequencies' in amplification, usually we care about capacitors, because El84 valves are capable in handling a lot higher band of frequencies than the acoustic spectrum. So I wonder if the upgrade (mainly in capacitors) was succesfull or not. Just to be sure I tested my speakers on a different amplifier (Yamaha DSP AX-620) and hey… I got the same effect…. Now I am totally confused. Is it the amp or the speakers? Is there a possibility for a burned out tweeter or a worn component in crossovers? The speakers are in excellent cosmetic condition and at a facile optical and aural test everything seems fine. Any suggestion would be very helpfull and just to notice that I am an electronic technician my self, so I will be capable for some tests or a simple repair. Any help or suggestion would be very helpful. Best regards Nikolaos Markopoulos Athens Greece

    Heresy

If I opened up my '85 heresies and found E-2 crossovers, would that be a upgrade from a previous owner?
  6. So I had told myself that I'd wait to post anything for a few days, in regards to the new crossovers I purchased, but I felt like the events that took place in my listening room and my ears tonight might be worth sharing. So I have a pair of 88 CW II's and decided to replace the stock crossovers. Many of you here on the forum aided in my decision by offering advice, opinions and comments when I had posted on the forum about this topic. So thank you to those that participated in that thread. Ultimately the big Thanks goes out to Dean G at Aletheia Audio as I ended up choosing to go with his services. Dean replaced the caps in my stock network with Clarity Cap ESA's a sonicap and I think a couple of mundorfs. I could be wrong on that perhaps Dean will share the specifics. As I said I had planned to wait a few days before sharing my impressions. I know that there are differing opinions on the subject of break in time so I thought to be fair to both camps I'd just wait until a reasonable amount of juice had flowed through the networks before sharing impressions and opinions on them. I've decided against that as I thought some might be interested in hearing my experience as it un folds. I came home from work and waisted no time getting them reinstalled. I listened to a fairly wide array of music last night. I started with a couple of what I consider great albums from a musical, a performance and a production level. These first two albums both featured female vocals, Madeliene Peyroux, Half the Perfect World and Patricia Barbers, Cafe Blue. The cornwalls presented the music with precision and extreme clarity. There also seemed to be more low end present than I recall with the, 25 year old, stock networks which was the initial reason I suspected they were overdue for a change. Beyond that, however, I didn't find the music to be as engaging in some strange way. It felt a bit sterile or tight. The stereo image was a bit less pronounced than what I had remembered with the stock networks. The separation of instruments wasn't as defined and overall the sound stage seemed some what compressed, a bit more of a 2d image than three dimensional. I continued to run them through there paces with music ranging from Pink Floyd's Wish you were here to Steely Dan's Cant buy a thrill to various jazz recordings and ended the night with the Rachel Podger and Brecon Baroque's, 2013, Bach: double and triple concertos. I let them play all night as I went to sleep, playing classical streaming thru MOG via apple tv. Tonight, same story came home and fired up the amp and started out real mellow with Olafur Arnalds, Living Room Songs. Honestly I didn't pay much attention as I said hi to the fam and got settled in. Next I threw up Ry Cooder and Manuel Galban's Mambo Sinuendo. This album served as background music as we ate dinner. After Dinner I sat down and put Dire Straits Brother in Arms on. I've heard this album a ton of times. I see this album as a great studio album. I've heard it so many times though it doesn't really get me excited anymore out of familiarity. First track, so far away sounds good, clean and maybe a little more open than where I thought things were last night. Second track, Money for nothing, again i've heard this song so many times its hard for me to really get into it, it's one of those songs thats been played so much that it kind of becomes background music. NOT THIS TIME! Damn! where'd that come from?!? the intro literally had my heart pumping, I reached for the remote and turned it up. I wanted to hear more! After the big drum crescendo and the song really gets going I hit stop. Literally my heart was racing from the rush the music just delivered. I went and got my wife to see if she'd give me her opinion on the sound of the speakers with the new crossovers. She sat down I started to play Money for nothing. She sat there with no expression listening. Again, for me hearing the first 60 secs was like wow but I let it play for another minute until I couldn't stay silent anymore. I asked her if she thought this track sounded good. She said "I've never heard that song like that. Is that a different version? They don't play that intro on the radio." It's like the speakers are opening like a flower in bloom tonight, literally. Each track just gets a bit deeper a bit juicier. My beloved center image and sound stage is back and deeper and wider. The 3d like quality present and the music is alive and vivid in the room. I'll stop here..... I should mention that Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Give the People What They Want followed Dire Straits and was an amazing listen, again vivid. Everything thats come through tonight is sounding great and shimmering the music is palpable on night two with Aletheia Audio's rebuilt Cornwall II crossovers. Stay tuned
  7. Hi Klipsch Folks, Have recently acquired (from the widow of a Belle Klipsch owner) a trove of up-grade parts. They consist of brand new and un-used crossovers as well as new tweeters and mid range drive units (not the horns themselves). In addition to the two tweeters there is an extra tweeter with a broken frame (see pics). It was evidently replaced when it arrived broken. (I haven't checked but I assume it's otherwise functional.) I'm a bit fuzzy about what this equipment is worth but I assume it's upward of $1K. (The Klipsch company themselves evinced complete cluelessness when queried about the worth of these items .) Packing for shipment would be $100 and shipment would be additional. I live in Central CA and can meet anyone driving up/down Rt #5 or Rt#99… for $50.00 (We're South East of Fresno.) This would save packing and shipping expenses. Check pictures and I can answer questions via phone or email. (dbrummitt@gotsky.com) Failing response from this forum I will be listing these on ebay. Thanks for viewing this post, Dan
