  1. I am planning to upgrade my unmolested 1978 Khorns in the next week or so. I want to document the changes in a thread along with listening impressions. I'd like to use this thread for some suggestions from you Klipschites, then start a new thread for the actual changes. I have some questions, then I'd like to listen to your ideas. Comment on or critique anything you want. I took out all the other speakers in the living room weeks ago to get used to the the Khorn sound in Stereo mode. My other choice would be Pure Audio, meaning no audio processing by the Onk AVR. Onkyo TX-NR 717, bought in 2014. The 717 has basic Audyssey, 3 listening positions. It will set distances and trim level relative to reference, which usually means -12 db. I have disabled Audyssey and set both L/R to 0 trim. I could re-run Audyssey to get some baseline info. The Upgrade: I will be getting some Crites A/4500 crossovers and I will pull the Type AA. This means I can't use the stock K-77's. I will using some SEOS 12" horns and Denovo DNA-360 compression drivers I already had from another project. This will not be the same as a standard Crites A/4500 with the usual CT-120 or CT-125 tweeters. I don't want to change two variables at one time but I don't think I have much choice. Your opinions? I would like to put the new horn on the tophat, then move it front to back to experiment with some time alignment. And finally I was wanting to try putting some damping materials on the tophat to see if I could hear difference in reflection by using carpet, towel, maybe some foam sheets. Other suggestions?
  2. Anyone have specs on the 1964 Khorn? Do they all have the funky tuning box on top?
  3. No affiliation - just confused and curious if this is anything other than a DIY effort: http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/ele/5894289886.html
  4. No affiliation, but if you buy these please help me find a pair closer to home... http://www.kijiji.ca/v-electronics/gatineau/klipschorn-speakers/1215983926
  5. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Klipsch-Klipschorn-Vintage-Speakers-Excellent-Working-Matching-Serial-Numbers-/222295125742?hash=item33c1d26eee:g:Cl8AAOSwYIxYArK~ If anyone is local to Vegas this seems like a steal. $1500 or best offer with a buy it now. 6. I'm looking to add a center speaker between 2 widely spaced khorns. I can make up a mixer box from the figure in Paul Klipsch's Dope from Hope http://assets.klipsch.com/files/Dope_740700_v14n4.pdf but need advice as to whether I can use any stereo amp with a stereo-mono switch or if something like the Sony TA-N55ES is needed. The Sony appears to have dedicated mono input on the back. Any suggestions for readily available amps that would be suitable?

  8. Earlier today I modified my Type A Khorn crossovers to support the 4500Hz CT-120 crossover point. I did it in such a way that I could nearly instantly A/B original/4500Hz by using a DPDT switch to introduce an additional 2uF capacitance in parallel with the 2uF tweeter cap and also a 500uH inductor into the squawker path. Note that you CANNOT perform this test while using the stock K77; as others have pointed out, it cannot handle the additional power supplied to it by the increased bandwidth. My listening choices were three very familiar tracks (to me, anyway) Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase. - Track 1 : First Regret / 3 Years Older Nidarosdomens jentekor & TrondheimSolistene - MAGNIFICAT - Track 4 : Et misericordia Nidarosdomens jentekor & TrondheimSolistene - MAGNIFICAT - Track 5: Fecit potentiam I can definitely hear a difference in the midrange when I A/B the mods. Quite a lot of the harshness in the midrange is greatly reduced. This is most apparent to me in the female vocals on Track 5 of MAGNIFICAT. I liked it so much that I listened to a few hours of Steely Dan, Ozric Tentacles, Bucky Pizzarelli, and Animals as Leaders... after which I stopped the A/B and made the mods more permanent. For those interested in the diagram, I can provide it as a PM on request.
  9. I poked around and I don't see this so thought I would ask... how big a corner does a KHorn require. ie- What is the distance from the corner in the room to the outside corner of the speaker that is against the wall?
  10. No affiliation just ran across them. Guy sounds like he doesn't want to give them up but alas... THE WIFE. http://www.usaudiomart.com/details/649288968-klipsch-kornerhorns/
  11. So I saw a listing this morning for replica Klipschorn cabinets, made to PWK specs. No drivers or crossovers. The owner recommends re-veneering since they were built 30 years ago. Would you go for it? If so, what would be your total budget for the cabs, drivers and crossovers? How much work would it take to do it right?
  12. Wondering if anyone is interested in trading these 1976 Quad ESL 57's (physically near mint/internally need attention) for some Klipsch Heritage line: Heresy, cornwall, lascala, belle, rf-7, chorus, forte, etc. Winner of auction did not send payment/pickup again in eBay and had to re-list (again 4/19), but open to trades/ offers. Im here in Miami, Florida 33190, if anyone interested let me know. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1976-Quad-ESL-57-Black-Maple-IN-FLORIDA-NO-SHIPPING-/152061169875?
  13. Hi folks, I have visited this site many, many times as a spectator. I do have a few Klipsch pieces but never had the big boy stuff. Its not a matter of money per-say, but selling the want to the little lady..... if you know what I mean. Anyway, so she moved my man room from a very spacious area the lower floor to the house to a smaller room over the garage. I in turn built up my stereo system the way I want it. I like great speakers from smaller names companies. They are not inferior to any of the competition what so ever. For example I have a set of SAE 10's outstanding sound. I have a set of Chapman ( Small custom speaker company on Vashon island near Seattle) that are some of the best sounding speakers I have ever had, and many more. Well a few days ago I was cruising the local Craigslist and came across another set of locally made speakers I had to have. Mostly due to price. $100.00 !!! They were speakerlab K-horns. So I dashed right over a grab them. The gent tells me they were bought by his dad new, and he didn't think the mids worked. Well I get them back over to my shop clean the pots and found a wire off the mids, ohmed the speakers and found no issues, so I plugged them in and everything works fine but they are not very efficient. It was time to develop a plan. I know I am going to swap out the crossover for a ALK universal set. All though the current crossovers are working and the caps are ok, things could be much better with a little coin and elbow grease. I might look into swapping the mids with Altec 811's or 511's but thats about it. Now for the next challenge. I can't place them in the corner completely because remember this a room over the garage. I have a sloop ceiling and where these are going the ceil t wall is 46 inches. The speaker is 48. So it will be off the wall by 4 to 5 inches. This means I will have to wall back them.
  14. Hi -So this is a unique pair I'm selling. My father-in-law was an audio engineer and scientist for Martin Marietta back in the day (yes, he was literally a rocket scientist). In his spare time he handmade exquisite spanish guitars and dabbled in all things high-end audio. He assembled this pair of Klipschorns using individual, original parts and then constructed the cabinets from original plans. The bass drivers are Electro Voice 18WK, -of course, they are stunning drivers. The mid-drivers are Electro Voice 55K drivers which he then hand-cast ceramic horns for with a friend from the lab -very smooth sounding. The tweeters are Electro Voice T350's. The cabinets are rough plywood; he never got around to finishing the veneer on them.. I know, too bad. Cross-overs were manufactured by a friend. How do they sound? Simply put; stunning. They truly can reproduce full orchestral music at concert volume. Debussy's la Mar will bring tears to your eyes... I kid you not. They're the bee's knees. Why am I selling them? They're in our basement and we're moving in a month. I am sad to say we don't have room for them in our new (smaller) home. He gave them to me years ago and I have his blessing to sell them now. They really deserve to go to someone who knows what they're capable of and who's willing to complete the construction/restoration. What's the price? Email me with an offer and we can talk. I'm mostly concerned that they go to a good home. Phil philm162@gmail.com

  17. These speakers came with my house and were clearly treasured by the original owner. Sadly, they are wasted on me and are now seeking a good home. I have read thru the forums so have some (very) limited knowledge about what they are. The Klipschorn pair have consecutive serial nos. 8P125 & 126 and are the model KB-BR which I think means Birch. They might have been the unfinished models and the owner added the finish (note that in the attached pics it looks like they don't match but they do). They are in very good condition. However, we were not as good caretakers as the owner and they do have some small fraying of the speaker material on the very back edge. The 1957 Shorthorn is model SPI-15 and serial 803. This is also in very good condition. There are some very small pulls in the material on the front and a minor scratch on the top. Additionally there is a 4th speaker that I know pretty much nothing about. All the speakers were checked recently by an audio tech and found to be in good working order. I have attached some pictures. They are available for inspection & pickup from Wilmington, NC. I will consider all reasonable offers. Please let me know if you have questions or need add'l pix. Thank you for looking :-)
