  1. I recently was gifted a mismatched pair of slant monitors. Cabinets are very solid. Handles are mismatched. Both terminal plates are missing. Both k77s have bad coils. One k55 has push terminals, one has soldered. One k55 coil is bad. HIE x-overs look physically ok. Both k42 (kp?) woofers are in good shape though. SIGH! My gifts are usually like this. My main setup has Heresy IIs and I love them. My question is what the heck to do with the components or rebuild the whole. I have built hundreds of enclosures and passive crossover networks in my career as an audio technician so I am not afraid of a project. From what I understand the woofers roll off pretty high. So maybe new ported enclosure? Bass bin like lascala? What do you think guys?
  2. I thought it would be a good idea to introduce myself quickly, stop lurking in the shadows and share with you my quest with a recently acquired Heresy pair. My name is Robert (Rob) I live in the northern part of Mexico and I have been an audiophile by my father´s inheritance. My quest for music Nirvana guided me to try the Klipsch sound and since my listening space/study is a bit crowded....it serves as audio workshop/music room/informal office... the space is limited and thus a pair of Heresy (smallest from the Heritage series AFAIK) seem to be adequate for the space (10´x12´) After a quick hunt I got myself a well preserved pair of Heresy I with TYPE E xover, K22E woofer, K55M squawker & K77M tweeter. Consecutive S/N 137X935 (any history with the given S/N will be much appreciated). After a quick check to the Xover network and verifying good cable connections hooked them to my modded Adcom GFA535, crude first impression great mids, good top end but lean on the bottom and with a coldish sound signature. I was expecting a lean bottom but it lacked body for its size. Changed the Adcom for my upgraded NAD 3120 and things were warmer and mucho better in the low end. Listened for a week or so to adjust my ears and brain. Things for me were too front forwarded in the mid & upper end, very very good with a good amount of WOW factor with how this drivers and Horns present the music. Like it! but...YEs there is a but....I did not went to bed with a sense of satisfaction at the end of the day, they lacked body...fullness. After reading some in the forum opted to try the well known network mod by @JohnA (great stuff John!) to tame / balance the upper portion and things got better, the veil in the lower half was pretty much gone, more balanced all around...but, yes, another but...well actually the same from the start, the 12 inch woofer seems to be a bit lacking and IMO does not make justice to the upper portion of the speaker. I do not consider myself a bass head but in my room the Heresys always leave a sense of....they do not give me the full grin I am expecting for. Nothing new I know but they could have a little more body in its foundation. Yes I have played with speaker placement since I know bass is very tricky vs speaker placement. After reading some more I am very tempted to go for the Super Heresy mod by @ClaudeJ1, seems pretty straight forward...thumbs up for the mod Claude, you have a good amount of followers for what I have read and really walked the mile with the mod and overall design and testing) Will gather the info, part list and everything necessary and will keep you posted on the progress, doubts along the way and outcome of this new near future DIY adventure. Anyhow, sorry for the long intro and I will be around reading all the good stuff from you guys. Rob.
  3. This project accidentally started due to the thread below, The topic of using the components of the Frankensmurfs to create @ClaudeJ1's "Super Heresys" (I know the plural of heresy is heresies, but Heresy, as used by Klipsch, is a proper noun, so the plural can be Heresys, plus, it's my thread) is better in this forum than the alerts forum. The Frankensmurfs are due to arrive on Tuesday. A 4x8 sheet of Baltic birch will be available on Monday. The pair of Eminence Delta Pro 12A woofers will be delivered next week. A pair of Eminence APT 50 tweeters and APT 200 baby cheeks have been collecting dust. This pawn shop mess might be a bit of stone soup, but I'm picking up speed on this slippery slope. Now to wait for lightning to strike so new life can be breathed into the monsters. More photos and updates to follow.
  4. Hey everyone... did a rewrite of this to share more about the project Im working on. Ive been a fan of Klipsch and tube amps for a long time. Given my amp choices, horn or single driver speakers are the preferred choices. Normally I build big honking speakers... I even built one my wife kicked out of the house... too large. In an effort to finally get some speakers in the TV room I went after something she has accepted before... the Heresy. She has liked it before due to its limited height... it doesn't block the windows. I love it as, its a 1950s VW battle with a Porsche engine hiding under the hood. The Heresy is an honest 96db speaker. Good for 50hz or so on up. Its a sealed box so no bass hump. Its mid bad is solid and its a fast speaker. Id consider it a gateway drug. I went of CL in search of a local purchase. In a perfect world I would have found a gen 1 heresy. You want this type as it has the screw on K55 driver... the same mid range in other Klipsch speakers like the Cornwall, LaScala or K Horn. Unfortunately as I planed to gut the speaker and start over, the only one in my price point was beatup and a gen 1.5 Heresy. $400 later it was delivered to my door. The plan is to use a ALK Crossover. Its adjustable and will make a Heresy actually sound good. Attenuating the mid and HF is super important and I still have HF hear and want to keep it that way. The woofers as K22 are perfectly fine.. maybe even good, but the Eminence LFA12 is better and closer to the pro K24 spec. The Tweeter as a K77 is good. Its even rebuild able now with new diaphragms should you need, but as I have access to Fastlane audio's elliptical tweeter... why not use a modern bad *** tweeter instead. Fastlane's tweeter lens is $100 for pair. The B&C DE10 or DE120 are my choices and are fantastic. I might go with Eminence ASD1001B as its American made and a solid performer too. I measured the drivers and got to selling all the parts I would not use on eBay. The Mid horns were the usable but not my cup, K701 with the bold on K53. (No one wants a K53/K701 combo). It got sold off for $100 to a local buyer who had his own project. I was able to purchase a K700/K55 push pin style (My preference on the K55) for $180 to my door. Normally this would be $200-$240 but I got a good deal. This will now make the Heresy a OG classic which has been upgraded. Same looking horn, but metal instead of ABS and Screw on instead of bolt on. (You can roll drivers if you wanted to now.). The cabs were less than ideal. Klipsch builds with 3/4" ply and 1/2" ply for he back panel. We laminated 1/4" to all the sides of the speaker... giving us a new corner edge and a stiffer cabinet. The front and back are edge banded to hide the lamination. The inside of the back panel had 1/4 MDF added. This will provide a key to center the back panel and panel increased surface area when its inset inside the cabinet... Long story short, its a hair smaller now but a ton stiffer. Additionally I love the look of slant risers on the Heresy. I went to Bob writes and ordered a set. Ebay sales: K77 Tweeters sold for $90 E2 Crossovers sold for $50 K22 Woofers sold for $80 New parts: ALK CSW700 crossover $350 Eminence 12LFA $130 Fastlane audio Tweeter Lens $100 Eminence ASD1001B $50 pair K700/K55 $180 Wood Work $200 for extra ply/finishing costs $40 for the slant risers ____________________________ $810 $240 -$220 Total: $830 Im into the whole speaker for ~$1250. Its a lot of money for sure, but there is no way it would sound remotely as good. Work has just started but I wanted to show the starting point, and plan. Here are the before pics.
