Chasser
Hey People, I recently had a basement flood. My 20 year old Hamblen speakers suffered light cosmetic damage. Hamblen Speakers were made in Canada in the late 80's. They have served my well all these years as I paid $800 CDN back in 89 for a slightly used pair that the original owner paid $1200 CDN. I power them with a Nakamichi PA-7 good for 200 a side. My Pre amp in an even older Sony unit that was very high end for Sony in the day a TA-E86B. I also have a couple powered subs in the mix; Paradigm PS 1000's. I love LOUD tunes. Anyways the spec's on these old Hamblen's our as follows: Frequency Response: 50 HZ-20kHz Crossover Frequency: 1500Hz-4500Khz Power: 150 watts RMS Nominal: 8 ohm's Sensitivity: 98 db Cabinet: real Oak cabinet, 19'" w x 15"d x 38"h, 80 pds each Woofer: 15" 84 oz magnet Mids: 2x 5" Tweets: 2 x 21/2" I can keep this speakers and except a cosmetic allowance or the Insurance company will set me up with something like the RF 83 or a Paradigm Studio 100. I love the real wood & I like the big driver of these old girls. I did audition the RF83's & I did like the sound. I have heard negative comments (not here) about them sounding harsh and fatiguing after they are at home though. I wonder if my old Nak is a good fit with the RF 83's & I do have a couple powered subs so I have the bottom end covered. I just wonder if I make the swap if I will long for the 3 way speakers & big driver? What do you Klipsch experts think?
jdm56
Your old speakers sound like a good design, but they are rather long in the tooth. Is the company still in business...are parts available? If not, and the insurance company is willing to give you a decent allowance for them, I would definitely look to upgrade. If you love big drivers and the triple 8's of the RF83 don't do it for you, your subs should pump up the testosterone factor somewhat. A better idea[6]...I see Klipsch Heritage in your future! How about a beautiful pair of Cornwalls, new or used? No harshness there!
Batmans Robin
Hey Chasser, I would keep your old speakers. They've been good for you all these years and you like the way they sound. Just because they got a little cosmetic damage is no reason to get rid of them for something new and flashy. I think you'd regret losing them. You might end up liking something new but what if you don't? Then you'll be kicking yourself.
sean5340
"I also have a couple powered subs in the mix; Paradigm PS 1000's. I love LOUD tunes." With subs just add LaScalas. They will get CRAZY loud or play very refined.

I payed one thousand dollars for mine, off of Craigslist. Best $1000 I've spent! Dennie[]
Chasser
Thanks for the advice guys! I said Bye Bye to the old speakers & hello to the new Klipsch RF-83's. I found a brand new pair in the box for about half of suggested list. Unfortunately it will be 4-6 weeks before my flood damaged rec room is back in action. So they wait quietly in their boxes until the day arrives.
