i agree with mike, huge companies like sony are arranged in departments, and each department has access to the HUGE sony resources. they have all the tools they need to develop a technology better than their competitors.

on the other hand, they have to show a profit and that's the most important part, so they're under a lot of pressure and sometimes can cut corners which often disadvantages the consumer.

but for technology development, I don't think Sony is buy any means behind anyone in terms of potential.

I can't resist, so I'll go ahead and say it. Those lines (aka. damper wires) do not affect design guys as you claim Mike. I sit in front of a computer for at least 8 hours in a day doing either analog or FPGA circuit design and I really don't notice the damper wires. So for that, your claim is false. I believe the score would be 2 - 1 in favor of Sony now. Oh and don't try to say that the lines I use are not thin. Anyway, back to the books.

Lets take a trip to the new sony site .. http://www.sonystyle.com/sonystyle/4621/4622/4626/983.default.html

then to support: http://www.sonystyle.com/sonystyle/4621/4622/4626/983.support.default.html

then to warranty:

"LIMITED WARRANTY

SONY ELECTRONICS INC. and SONY OF CANDADA LTD. ("SONY") warrant this Product against defects in material or workmanship as follows:

LABOR: For a period of three (3) years from the date of purchase, if this Product is determined to be defective, SONY will repair or replace the Product with a new or rebuilt unit at no charge, or pay the labor charges at any SONY authorized service facility. After the warranty period, you must pay for all labor charges.

PARTS: In addition, SONY will supply, at no charge, new or rebuilt replacements in exchange for defective parts for a period of three (3) years. After the warranty period, you must pay for all parts costs. "

This is not the top of the line model. Granted that some do have 1yr warranties but I am not talking about the low end either.

Mike...

never said that sony doesn't put as much effort into one department than the other I'm just saying that you have to realize every company has it's specialties and must show a profit or that division or department whichever you prefer will get cutbacks in $$$ which is quite a driving factor.

Personally I don't spend a lot of time looking at the specs on computer monitors. I'd rather compare onkyo vs. denon vs. marantz vs. yamaha (i like electronics) or compare ferrari vs. porsche.

Each brand and model has it's ups and downs you pickem when you buy it.

By the way, I didn't say diamondtron, I said diamond scan, and in 1989.5 I bought the following:

386 processor (8 mhz maybe??)

4 mg ram

250 mb hdd

19" diamondscan monitor

_________

~~~$8000
it's been with me ever since. Why upgrade when I'm getting my money's worth?
By the way Mitsubishi's tv's are quite nice, as are sony's but when you get hi end big screen, rear projection, hdtv, I have to go with the following choices:
1. toshiba
2. hitachi
3. pioneer
4. mitsubishi
5. sony
my own input on whoever said that the sony has the best tv's you can buy
Ok I'm back to answer all of this.
HEY GUYS! I asked for GOOD arguments! Try to look a little further next time.
Ok so :
For you snapgt :
I agree that a lot of people (Myself included that owns a ViewSonic EF70 with lines) dont really care about those lines, but as a salesman, I saw some customer exchanging their Viewsonic flat for non-flat because of those lines. But since I cant prove this, I'll just stick with the point for ViewSonic for the lines...
Why? Could you give me a valuable explanation of why giving Sony a point for something they never did?! That would be stupid and ilogic! ViewSonic is the one that found that no-lines technology, and what I could do is simply removing the point. I would then make Viewsonic 1 Sony 1...
BUT... If I remove the point from ViewSonic for having discovered something, I should do the same for the .22 dot pitch from Sony... Am I wrong? So either it's Viewsonic 2 Sony 1 or Viewsonic 1 Sony 0.. I dont really care, it makes the same results anyway. But since we are looking for a lot of points here to compare... I stick with
ViewSonic 2 Sony 1
(And please dont tell me the .22 dotpitch is more useful than removing the lines from the screen, those are both new technologies which we have to consider.)
For you Paragon :
For sure the warranties with Sony are 3 years for a lot of models, but the cheapest is the CPD-G200 at 605$ Canadian! I bought my EF70 at 400$ Canadian and the specs are almost the same (Oh yeah except for the resolution), and I got a 3 years warranty.
So no points modification here, ViewSonic is better than Sony for the warranties, plus the fact that you have the possibility of getting a 48 hours exchange ON SITE warranty with ViewSonic... I admit you have to pay something for it, but still, you can have it.
And by the way
quote:
I just "disproved your theory"
What are you talking about? Disproved my theory that ViewSonic is way to go better than Sony? Errr...Nice try but no bananas...Better luck next time, that's all I can say.
For Shiplemw1 :
I would like to ask you this... Why The CPD-E200 of sony that got exactly the same specs (OK OK...except for the 1600 X 1200 resolution) as the
ViewSonic EF70 is found a hundred dollars more in almost every store in Canada...
Do you know why? Because you pay a lot of money cause it's written SONY on it...
Who said Sony had a great reputation? Well yeah, of course that's totaly true, but dont you think you more often pay some money for the reputation?
And it's ok for you 19", I just wanted to check out, cause I was really surprised of that. Well, if you still like it after 10 years, good for you. Everybody knows that companies made better product before.... Ah, but this was a long time ago.. When you could buy a TV and not having it repaired for 15 years...
And talking of TVs, I'm not pro in those, but I doubt that a company can match sony XBR tvs... Oh well, possible, but this aint my department...
And finally for you Gluegun......
WHAT!?s>
Highest quality tubes?????? Gezz.... Go on http://www.lacie.com
those babies are what I would dream of having, ok these are 19" and 22", not 24"... But I saw one of them, and beleive me... It's worth it! (A little too expensive for me though...)
I say Lacie's electron blues and protons beat ViewSonic and Sony easily, but the fact is that those screen are hard to find in North America, and that they are for professional graphic companies that use a lot of Apple computers...
Well people, the score didnt move at all,
Viewsonic 2 Sony 1
Viewsonic :
No-Lines in PerfectFlat screens technology
3 Years warranty on EVERY monitors, no exception.
Sony :
The amazing .22 dotpich on the GDM F400.
That's if for now, I hope having lot of replies.
And by the way, you can check www.pcworld.com
This site is well known in the technology industry and does really good reviews of products. Check their editors choice of monitors... They approve me all the way.
In response to the real mike:
After looking over your post and browsing the internet I've come across the following things you need to be aware of:
Your not giving points for other things:
Bulk:
Sony: weight 44.1 lbs,
dimensions (wxhxd)15.9" x 16.3" x 16.5"
Viewsonic: weight 37.4 lbs
dimensions (wxhxd)15.9"x16.3"x16.5"
did sony add some lead to their monitor or what? for pure weight, sony wins
Sony 2 Viewsonic 2
Display buttons and features:
Sony 5 buttons and 18 onscreen displays
Power on/off, brightness, contrast, reset, display mouse control
Viewsonic: I'm guessing 3 by what the webpage says not sure, you can interpret it (Power ON/OFF, 1, DOWN (), UP ( ), & 2 )
gotta love those buttons and not having to go through onscreen displays, sony wins
Sony 3 Viewsonic 2
Power-management:
Sony: international energy star, vesa dpms, and nutek compliant
Viewsonic: energy star compliant
both have energy star but sony is internationally compliant, sony wins but viewsonic is being efficient so they win a little too
Sony 4 Viewsonic 2.25
Looks of the whole package:
+ are based on a 1 scale with ++++ being highest when compared to the other monitor
Sony +++
Viewsonic +
both look like computer screens and not supermodels, rather boxy I'd say, sony wins
Sony 4.75 Viewsonic 2.50
Price:
Sony 357.00
Viewsonic 253.00
Sony 4.75 Viewsonic 3.75
Sony doesn't win on price but...
In the end sony wins
KLIPSCH RULES!!!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!s>
quote:
did sony add some lead to their monitor or what? for pure weight, sony wins
AHAHAHAH!!!!!!!! Stop it man!!! AHAHAH!! LOL!!
You are telling me that because my screen is less heavy than your Sony, the Sony is absolutely better!?? This is one of the craziest thing I've ever seen! Did you really thing that Sony and ViewSonic used exacly the same tubes???? It's normal that one is heavier than the other one, and dosnt mean that it's better.
Did you really think before writting this, I would like only one other person to say he agree with you on the fact that the Sony is heavier, so it's better thing...
I'm sorry to say : The weight dosnt have anything to do with quality of the screen, (and anyway, I prefer my screen not to be that heavy)
And for the buttons... Err..since you are all too lazy to check pcworld.com I'll take the quotes for ya :
quote:
FEATURES: 16.1-inch viewable area, .25mm stripe-pitch Diamondtron NF tube,1 up to 87-Hz refresh rate,2 Plug and Play ready, three-year warranty, 24-hour daily toll-free support.
SUMMARY: Deep, saturated color in graphics keeps this model at the top. Sophisticated on-screen control menu is easy to navigate with standard buttons on the front bezel.
This can be found at : http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,41402,pg,2,00.asp
Now that was for the 1st screen in their TOP TEN Editors choice... and it's the ViewSonic EF70.... And since you dont seem to know a lot of things about ViewSonic screens, I'll tell ya that EVERY ViewSonic monitors now come with those 5 buttons, if you dont know how to read, that aint my problem.
And if you ever work with Sony's control (Which are quite the same for the options) you would know that it's really messing up with the little ball under the screen. You got 5 buttons on 1 button... Depending of the 4 directions and if you press it. This gets really confusing.
Dont try this on me, I'm calibrating those screens every time we install them where I work. Go in a store and try by yourself, difference is amazing. Actually, since this is more an opinion, we cant really say who prefers the control. I hate Sony's and really like ViewSonic's... If anyone thinks different, then that's fine. We cant give points for "I like the control and I hate those".
... Ok so the points are still the same, unless a lot of people agree with you giving me REALLY good reasons (and dont forget to argue against PCWORLD)
Viewsonic 2 Sony 1
Before doing anything else... I'd like you to answer to this question...
What is the difference between "Energy Star Compliant" and "International Energy Star".
Find it and we'll see if one is better than the other.
...Now for the packages...
I need :
Where you found this?
Why are the packaged better?
Is it because of the color of the boxes?
Is it because a lot of software comes with it?
Answer all of these and we'll see.
Till then, I consider your post as one of the less explicit one. Next time, say things useful.. (Sony's is heavier...LOL!!) and if you find out things that might be interesting..Please tell us exacly what it is!
We are not arguing with opinions, but with facts.
Price...
Well finally it seems like the only thing that could be useful to know is for ViewSonic... But since I'm honest... I'll ask you where you found those prices...To check if this is true.
HEY just to be sure that everyone understands, I'm doing this cuz I have nothing else to do, right. But I prefer to do this the right way, and if I said something that you are septik about, well ask me and I'll be pleased to answer you the best I can. And this applies as well for me.
If you take part in this only because you prefer a company, well I wouldnt suggest to post here, since these things can be easily destroyed by little research.
Thank you for your attention, and ShiplemW1, this is far from being the end of the story. I'll keep this until nobody has good points to put on the topic.
I'm not here to make ennemis, just to see if I'm right or wrong.
Sony wins vs. Viewsonic,
bigger is better
Ford is better than chevy or dodge....
I agree with paragon, I'm not arguing your opinion, just trying to egg you on. One ways more so it wins. haha.... my opinion... I'll sum up this "argument" in the following example:
This viewsonic vs. sony thing is like ford vs. chevy, or ranger vs. s10. Only the person who's gonna be sitting in the driver's seat and using the product everyday can say which one is better for them. Some people buy the more expensive model because it's "better" some realize that the less expensive model is just as good as the more expensive one, but it has less frills.
There you go, summed her up in a paragraph and now we can all have our opinions, this has been fun,
Hehe, to see if your right or wrong eh?
I WIN YOU LOSE...
"looks ofthe whole package" - equates to- the way the monitor looks... el opinion de miguel says sony looks better sony wins
price- found them on buy buddy.com, you can check it out, just used whatever was available, also that's US not canadian (are you a canadian?)
heaviest wins equates to bigger equals better
the whole sony vs. viewsonic on this particular model can be summed up in my above a paragraph (in the post above this one)
Oh yeah and yes one can give the points for controls because you gave points for those two little lines not being on the viewsonic and being on the sony. That whole point was about how essential it was not to have those lines, so I believe it should be
sony 2 viewsonic 2
or
sony 1 viewsonic 1
or
sony 1.000000005 (.000000005 of a point for being heavier than the viewsonic)
viewsonic 1
just my .02
I totally agree with you guys. Product is good for some people, but not for others. You think Sony makes the best monitors, go straight ahead and lose your money... That aint my problem after all. Some people are still adicts to Intel, spend a lot of money on Pentium III while they could get much better for a better price. Anyways, this is an entire new depate which I dont want to participate in. Thx for having tried to prove to me that ViewSonic was worse than Sony.
Cya later all in a new topic even more interesting.
2 questions to ask...I thought that topic was finished but it seems like you really want to show your love for Sony...Oh well, your choice...
I have 2 questions and a fact for ya :
1 : You didnt answer my question about the "Energy Compliant" things, about one being international and not the other... Or something like that.
2 : What's the link between controls thing and lines in the screen? You are giving a point for something not really clear. And yeah I'm a Canadian, actually my mothertongue is French, so if you just wrote it with too much slang, well do it a little clearer so that I and a lot of other people can understand your point.
Becuz :
quote:
That whole point was about how essential it was not to have those lines, so I believe it should be Viewsonic 2 Sony 2
Err...take a calculator or something, if I understand well, you say that the point was about giving reward for the one that has no lines...And you give a point to Sony???
Fact : Ok here we go, you told us where you found the price, so ViewSonic is better for the prices ....Right? Where is the point for that? I havent seen it at all...
Oh well, you can still continue arguing, but you are getting hopeless... Now before telling me other sh*t , try answering those 2 questions please. Thank you and have a nice day. biggrin.gif
And by the way, I would really like anyone else than you to explain to me how a heavier screen = better quality. Is it me that is stupid and that everybody on earth know that or what?
gave the point to sony because you missed the whole point.
let me explain myself in like terms:
Mike the real one says: those two little lines aren't on the viewsonic and those lines are important because viewsonic is the first to get rid of them, viewsonic gets a point, (this is mike's opinion as several others said it is not important at all)
That means when I say:
I like sony's controls better than viewsonic aka my opinion, sony wins, sony gets point,
total equals:
sony 2 viewsonic 2
price is not in your original points but warranty was so...see bottom of post viewsonic (1 point),
Energy star compliance was setup by the epa to promote energy efficiency as such it is in a word, only applicable to the USA.
INTERNATIONAL ENERGY STAR COMPLIANCE do you need me to say more? does the word international spell it out? It means the sony is upto higher standards, on a global scale for several different countries.
Viewsonic 3 Sony 3.00000005 (.00000005 of a point because it's heavier)
Sony wins
have a nice day
I WIN YOU LOSE
1) i think it's written pretty clearly under Mike's icon and name that he is from Montreal, Quebec, CANADA...
2) the weight thing didn't make sense
3) i have 5 buttons on my viewsonic, the controls are very good and as you said it's your OPINION that the controls are better on the Saony, so not point there.
4) high resolution is important, I play games in 1600x1200 (just had to bring that up)
5) the energy star compliance would only be a big argument for ecologists, and ecologists (real ones) would probably not start talking about Dodge and Ford (if they're extreme enough to care about maybe half a watt less consumption per month, and i know i may be off, but not by much probbly) Besides, we live in Canada where the power is plentiful (we even export it) so it doesn't make a difference what Energy Star compliance crap we use with our monitors. if we were really concerned about power saving, there'd be no orange light when the screen is in suspend mode...
6) the energy star thing does not necessarily make sense. for example the country with the lowest emission standards for cars could very well have a car manufacturer deciding that his emission standards follow some kind of international criteria and he'd seemingly have an advantage over his competitors not clever enough to use the trick... i don't think the difference is much between the two screens. what are we after here, performance or saving power? we surely wouldn't be overclocking and using water coolant and hundreds of supa fast fans in our computers... hell, we probbly wouldn't use a computer and use recycled paper!! do you know how much it pollutes when you produce something made out of metal, like, say, a computer case? or a monitor? it's more costly to the environment to actually manufacture the screen than to use it for it's lifetime.
Pissin contest hey? Well that's what it is, cause now I think that our dear friend Shiplemw1 (strange name by the way, quite rough to pronounce) gonna eats his sucks.
For the lines thing, you are beginning to piss me off with that alright.. A normal person that knows how to read would have understand this really well!
quote:
I agree that a lot of people (Myself included that owns a ViewSonic EF70 with lines) dont really care about those lines, but as a salesman, I saw some customer exchanging their Viewsonic flat for non-flat because of those lines. By the way, the no-lines ViewSonic model is the E70F. I didnt put the quote for that one, just look back in the topic you'll find it.
GOD BLESS CUT ANS PASTE!
Where in all that do you find that I prefer the "no lines"... I just say that ViewSonic found a new technology and THAT'S QUITE ALL SO SHUT UP WITH THE LINES CAUSE I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT GET PISSED OFF COMING BACK ON THIS OK!!!
(You got you 20 bucks back for that one Janko)
So just forget about controls ok!! This is an opinion!!! AND BY THE WAY!!! You are the ONLY one that said a good thing about the Sony's control!
(Gez Janko...Ya going to be rich with that 10 buck ya know!)
OK price was not in my original post....
This is getting more and more stupid,...
SO WHAT!
Ok people here is what I say about ViewSonic : ViewSonic screens are less expensive than Sony's.... And this was even proved by Shiplemw1.
Happy now?
And the Energy Compliance...............
I really think Seb got the point there, no need for repeat... (thx budy by the way)
I wont say I win and you lost... Just to remind you that it's the 4th time you claim Sony is better and you still cant manage to get me in a corner...
Ya know why? CAUSE VIEWSONICS ARE BETTER!
If Sony were so great, do you think I would stand a chance in arguing?
Now I wonder if you'll take a chance of saying something else to me... And if you do, think twice before posting.
Well people, I claimed Viewsonics are better monitors... Anyone wanna try to beat me on this?
Cya all
