Uh, Mr. Robinson, would you like to add the TEA-9501PCS Mono Phono Preamp (pair for $257,521) to your Shopping Cart? How about the One Step Checkout? VISA, MC or Discover accepted.

Seriously, does anybody buy this stuff by clicking the boxes on the website?

If I put $400,000 of hi fi equipment on my AmEx card, I think there would be police at my door in about 25 minutes, and my wife right behind them!

That is probably some of the most overpriced gear around. My buddy went up there to hear some RL Acoustique Lamhorns and saw some of that gear. Ironically, when he asked to hear it hooked up to the Lamhorns to just see what a 35,000 300B amplifier sounded like, the quietly denied stating "problems." I had to chuckle at that one...problems, indeed.

Mike, as for the cartridge shot, actually, that is about the only thing in line with other pricing. There are actually quite a few MC cartridges in that range. The Moving Coil cartridge is actually quite difficult to make. Still, to consider $5000 for that device I would sure want the shop to mount it on the tonearm...one slip and you have just watched 5K go up in smoke.

Horror.

Not justifying the prices of this place, but someone once put into perspective for me the kinda of folks that pay for stuff like this. And it went like this:

"Tom, do you know what the difference is between a hundred thousand dollars and one million dollars to very wealthy folks?"

"Uh...this is a trick question, so I'll bite. What is it?"

"It's one zero Tom."

Especially if they buy from the Hi-Fi Farm.

Tom makes a point, some people have big bucks and these prices are a drop in the bucket to them.

I got scolded once on AA for going off on somebody

who paid $9000 for a Mothra Research power cord.

(I think that was the brand.)

I thought they were nuts.

Then I was explained that some folks have the money for this stuff, and more power to 'em!

The guy really bought it used for half that, Although.

Wish I had that kind of Disposable income.

I don't want that kind of disposable income if it turns me into an a$$hole.

$4500 for a powercord? God Forbid.

I felt guilty for spending $1500 on a CD player. I STILL feel guilty for doing that. I'll never do it again either.

There is much to be said for diminishing returns.

I think the beauty of this hobby is finding what you want for a decent price. Doing the research and the searching for it is half the fun (of course, listening is the other half). I know I took great pride in finding my mint Chorus I's ($600), Chorus II's ($500) and '76 Heresy's ($175) at reasonable prices, and being able to pick them up myself. I have done the same for my TT and phono stage, and am in the process of finding a tube amp/preamp combo to drive the Heresy's.

Do I wish I had the money to buy from HiFi Farm? You're damn right I do! Would I purchase from them if I did? Probably not. I would still look for the deal out there...
