I know when I worked in a hospital IT folks, if fired, were escorted to the door by security and now even allowed to return to their desks. That was back in the day of floppy disk drives, though.

Is there any real defense against a person determined to do damage for revenge? Great backup is the only thing that comes to mind, along with closing down their admin access. In this case, the perp had an unknown VPN account from home.

The $94,000 restitution sounds low. I'm guessing that meant paying for alot of restoring backup, if available, data entry from hard copy records and setting the mess right again.

Two years in the slammer is rough sledding, but she did a ton of damage and possibly endangered lives due to disruption of the organ donation network.

A guy where my brother used to work got fired and since he kind of knew it was coming placed a 'time bomb' in the computer networks. Ended up screwing up the entire computer system big-time. Luckily my brother was able to figure out how to fix it and also found that the time bomb was added to the computer system on the same day that the guy was warned that he might be fired. I don't know what the guy was charged with but I know he got jail time and a large fine.

What are disco records?

Donna Summer, Kool and the Gang, Bee Gees, you know...
That's too funny.

At our school, they don't let you know you might be fired. By the time you know, accounts have already been changed. Our CIO keeps a tight reign on accounts and such. It could still happen, of course, but the dangers are minimized somewhat.

Most things are traceable, but too many places don't take precautions.

Great songs like Odessa, I've Gotta Get a Message to You, I Started a Joke, Words, New York Mining Disaster 1941 (The first Bee Gees song I heard), To Love Somebody, to mention just a few. Many of those songs were covered by top singers and groups, from Elvis to Faith No More.

Then came disco. Hey, a band has to make a living, so who am I to say their music really went downhill in the Seventies. They made a lot of new fans, probably many more than the old fans they lost.

When the Sgt Pepper's movie was released, a friend of mine took his daughter to see it. He was amazed when she told him that she thought all the songs were written by the Bee Gees and not the Beatles.

Sounds like that knucklehead got fired for all the right reasons. (I'm in IT myself)

The budget for the project I was working was unexpectedly cancelled by the Board of Directors (we were operating without a CEO). I was let go the day before we left for a 2 week vacation to Europe. Kind of dampered the trip a bit, but seriously not as much as you would think.

I was given the day to clear out my personal files off my laptop (no backups from my personal drive to the network), email stuff from my work email account to my personal email accounts, etc... Definitely a professional courtesy that I appreciated.

It would have been very easy for me to do something malicious, but why? What good would that have done? As bitter as I felt, I knew that the decision wasn't theirs and even if it was, doing something to hurt someone else isn't going to make me feel any better about being fired.

That being said, if a fire burned down their offices as an act of God and no one, including firemen, etc... got hurt...well, I wouildn't lose sleep over it. I'd feel badly of course, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it. [A]

We had to let someone go in April. Was a domain admin. When he was in the office being told he was let go, we had disabled all VPN accounts, and forced everyone in the firm to change password for vpn, and gave everyone new group ID's for VPN access. Better safe then sorry. ... never mind we blocked his whole subnet(neighboorhood for you non tech people) from his home ISP. No one else in firm was on same subnet. Not that we expected trouble, but you never know who is going to go out ok, or not....
