CAMAC Connectors for Mark Levinson 28 preamp HELP HELP

Hi -- I must have given all my CAMAC/LEMO connectors and leads to whoever bought my ML 2 or (much longer ago) ML preamps. Curiously, I only have a solitary male CAMAC-to-female RCA adaptor, and it appears to be broken.

It looks like the 28 has alternative balanced connectors -- can you use those instead?

You might want to search for LEMO as well as CAMAC -- CAMAC apparently set the standards, and LEMO seems to have made them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LEMO.

I can use the balanced on CDP and tuner but not the Phono which is most important to me.

I called Mark Levinson aka Harmon Intl and they make a Camac to RCA adaptor and get $94 for a single. I need 10 of them. Screiw that.

IS this the right one?? http://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?FS=TRUE&N=4294758863+4051623+4294728630+1323043

I remember they're extremely expensive. And easy to break by sideways pressure as I recall. I Googled a couple of sites, but think you'd have to call Mouser and maybe some others to see if anyone besides ML makes an RCA-CAMAC adaptor. Maybe you'll have to consider just one pair for phono and XLR the rest.

No, that Mouser part may be CAMAC at one end, but the other end is a "BNC" locking connection (see the larger tabs near the end on the left of the pic below) I've only seen used by Wadia in audio. Maybe no one but ML makes or uses what you're looking for.

The CAMAC terminations look a little like the fiberoptic connectors on my Wadia CD boxes, so it might not hurt to call someone at Wadia: http://www.wadia.com/ to see if they can shed some light: 734.786.9611, But, I don't believe those are exactly CAMAC.

The other person you might contact is Steve Huntley at Great Northern Sound, to see if he or someone he knows can either work some onboard or outboard RCA jacks into your nice, pretty ML, or perhaps rewire an RCA jack onto/into the BNC end of the Mouser LEMO.

This was a real peculiarity of ML's. He may have hoped CAMAC's would catch on as an upscale item across the board, but obviously they didn't.

I'm running it through the balanced RCA now on cd and it's a very good sounding pre. I'm mostly interested in the phono section on this.

They used the Camac in computers, military, and aerospace industries and I've contacted some buddies in each of these fields to see if they can come up with something that will work for now.

I'm wanting to hear the phono and IF it's what I'm hoping it is then I'll trash the Camacs and run all new RCA's where needed on the pre. I don't keep a system in the same place long enough to hardwire either.

I wish I could borrow a pair for the phono. IF it sounds right then I don't mind putting a couple hundred bucks in the connectors.

Sometimes I just sit back and laugh at myself for the messes I can get into trying to find a better sound. LOL!

Vinyl is a P.I.A. sometimes but nothing beats the sound.

Small world... A good friend was the engineering manager at LEMO USA for several years after leaving my company. He's since moved on... I actually toured their facility in Napa in 2004. I was not aware any A/V companies used their stuff.

Their website is excellent but slow. I've verified that the 00 series connector includes their CAMAC line, and I'm downloading the 00 catalog now. Anyone know the upload limit here?

Looks like LEMO themselves do not make CAMAC to RCA adapters (several industrial coax types, such as F, BNC,and others)

Also looks like the only plastic model plug is PEEK, which may be more expensive molded than CNC lathe'd aluminum! (Been years since I've looked at a PEEK quote.)

Here's a direct link to the catalog selection page... you need the 00 catalog. http://intra.lemo.ch/WD140AWP/WD140Awp.exe/CONNECT/PartSearch?p1=CatalogsDown

I forgot -- Fischer was another CAMAC manufacturer sold by Levinson dealers.

I can send you my single CAMAC-RCA female connector if you want to try it. It does look broken, so I probably had to replace it; I don't know if it works.

The post is quite old, but someone over at a-gon found the north american distributor for fischer connectors, the a-gon post specifically for ML pre's:

Crap those are expensive in small quantities! http://www.mouser.com/_/?Keyword=736-ff*&FS=True (mouser search for 736-ff* will get you all the CAMAC male plugs they carry from LEMO.)
