EV Georgian

I believe I may have stumbled across the remnants of an EV Georgian speaker at a local tag sale. This is what I bought:

EV 15W-K woofer, X336 crossover, 848 HF coax midrange enclosed in a 400 Hz horn and what appears to be a T35 tweeter (no markings).

No cabinet.

does anyone know of a source for the EV Georgian cabinet plans?

This may be a fun project if the drivers test well. The woofer has a small tear in the cone which can be repaired.

There were two versions of the Georgian bass cabinet, the earlier one identical to the Khorn bass cabinet from the early 1950s, the later one being an EV design similar to the Khorn but with differences in the throat. There were 3-way and 4-way Georgians listed in the EV catalogs. There was a decorative shell into which the bass horn and HF components were placed. I have some EV plans for the shell but not the innards. I know of a couple of folks using Georgian cabinets, but they aren't using the shell. Without it the speakers can be made to resemble more modern Khorns.

I think you're better off using the SpeakerLab plans. But attached are a form of the Georgian plans -- maybe there are others.

The uncompressed file is 34 MB. I used Acrobat's adaptive compression turned up to almost full power to reduce file size. Full power turns charcoal into diamonds.

The material was given to me by a forum member and I'll have to find the note from him. The version posted shows notes by an engineer who built one and found errors in the measurements.

I have a pair of Georgians assembled from a kit from EV way back in the 50's. The model 105 was just the dirver components kit and the model 106 was the baffle kit.

I still have the original plans for both the K-horn baffle and the plans for the decorative cover shell. I am in the process of rebuilding my pair right now. I am planning to run it bare bones with just the corner horn bass baffle with the 848HF horns open with everything painted satin black.

Is your X336 cross over housed in a large silver wood box with EV logos on it or is it a metal can ? The older wood box ones were not potted in tar so you could rebuild them and replace caps and or coils.

Original price for my kits were 295.20 per speaker which was the 105 and the 106 kits together for that price. You needed to buy 2 105 and 2 106 kits for a working pair.

My original Amp was a Pilot tube preamp with a Harmon Kardon tube Citation II Pwr Amp.

I am currently running a Dynaco solid state preamp with a Stereo 150 Pwr Amp.

I've got a pair of KD2's with the port opening being in the front like the Patrician.

Also seems the bass bin volumn is a touch smaller (based on looking at a open Khorn).

Curious on how your project went. I have the same set up as you, including Dynaco preamp, but a Dynaco 120amp. What crossovers are you using?

I have to ask, on the knob labels what does 'Brilliance' and 'Presence' mean? Is that treble and bass?

I’m pretty sure mine were made from one of the kits, or just plans that EV used to sell. They both have subtle differences from each other.

Brilliance is Treble, presence is lower end.  On older speakers they both should be set "flat" which is in the middle of the dial, so in this case set them both to #5.  This will keep from causing damage to the old components still inside those speakers....such as woofer surrounds, tweeter diaphragms, and such.

Further to what HDBR said, I'm quite sure that presence is the L-pad for the midrange horn driver.  Brilliance would be the L-pad  for the tweeter..

 

FWIW.  the son of an honorary uncle was in Viet Nam in the mid 1960s.  Probably the XO of a swift boat.  Something was developing and he woke up the captain.  The captain told him to handle the situation himself and went back to his bunk.  

 

The fellow came home with a huge TEAC receiver.  There was knob for presence.  It was explained to me that this was to make singers more present.

I guess that I should have just said mid-range for the presence , instead of lower-end.  It actually depends on how many different drivers are in the speaker, which control affects which driver.... but the woofer is normally not part of that control in most instances.  We tend to think in 3-way speaker systems since we are Klipsch fans, but some speakers have, for instance,  two tweeters of different types, or two or more midrange drivers of different types...and, brilliance/presence controls may or may not adjust all of the drivers, just some of them.
