OK, time to chime in with a "how loud can they go" storySmile.gif

When my friend was shopping for speakers, he had similar concerns. He told the salesman at the shop that he wanted high SPL. First, he purchased a set of Polk Audio SRS speakers (the large models with the "umbilical cord" btween the two speakers), matched with a H/K PM665 integrated amp (one of the best SS integrated amps I've ever heard, BTW). He promptly blew them.

So, the shop set him up with a set of Fortes. They lasted two hours.

Now the shop is getting miffed (and so is my friend). After more discussion as to just what defines "high SPL", the shop manager hand delivers a set of Cornwall II's. The shop manager explains about clipping and so forth. Now, my friend is a service technician (so he knows what clipping is) - but my friend's definition of "high SPL" and the shop manager's seem to be different. "I think the Cornwalls are the ticket", says the shop manager.

Upon installation, the difference was astounding. My friend regularly turned them up to reference levels, with no trouble. There was a gas station three blocks from his house, and I could hear those Cornwalls at the gas station. He has a collection of letters from local residents (cc'd to the appropriate city council and law enforcement authorities) about the stereo. Needless to say, many parties were held at my friend's house - nearly on a daily basis during the summer.

That was 14 years ago. Those Cornwalls are still playing (another friend has them now), and still all original drivers and parts. He's never blown a driver or diaphragm. I finally got a set of my own, after 14 years (and I have never driven mine like my friend drove his). The experience sure sold meSmile.gif

Speaking about max SPL and dB levels there is one wacko in the 3dss.com forums that pretends he can listen to his car audio system each day at high spl and still not lose hearing(we are talking well over 130dB folks!).His car audio system was measured at 149dB! Anyone here wants to be forced to listen to anything over 130dB. ANYONE

LOL

mosta you guys have been talking about melting the speakers. one of my very stupid friends took 2 pioneer floor standing speakers 2 bose speakers (hehe.) and 2 infinity outrigers. he hooked um up to a pioneer stereo receiver. 2 channels. ran all 6 speakers off 2 channels that could only supply about 50 wpc. and turned it up really really loud. it with stood for about 2 or 3 months. and one night at a party......can you say FIRE!?!?!?! the reciever caught on fire. it started to melt within itself! when the smoke cleared........the hole front of the reciver was melted.........musta been the bose huh?

just to say that its not always the speakers getting hurt. its the amps some times too............

My 2 cents...

I'll put it on your tab. :)

JO4,

If you don't have anything of value to say, please go somewhere else. Don't spread your attitude here.

I agree with Ears, how can anyone continually listen to sound at 130db and not lose any hearing. It may not be showing up right away, but wait for a couple of years. I used to have great hearing, until I could afford my car stereo in my late teens. Now, many years later, I get my hearing tested annually, and it deteriorates each year. I haven't listened to loud music, or been subjected to loud sounds in the past few years, yet my hearing is deteriorating. It's all due to what I listened to in the past. When your hearing starts to go, you turn the music up even louder to compensate, causing even more hearing damage.

I sometimes worry that there will be a day when I won't be able to hear my wonderful Klipsch speakers any more.

JO4, Its a for sure thing that your a newbie here, and not just because you post is at 1. The Ear is a very respected and intelligent forum member. If you listen with your mouth shut for a while you will find that out. Besides what kind of post is having your first post in here bashing another member. You won't make any friends that way.

It looks, like JO4 just signed up to be a sh@$. He does seem to have a problem with proper English grammer though. Be careful Mr. Ears, you may have a Canadian brother stalking you. You may recognize some of his letters, probaly reading like:

"You I hurt will."

On the other hand, if he is American you are definitely safe. With that kind of wit, he will never make it past the border casinos, the bright pretty lights will distract him. Oh well, at least he didn't state a strong opinion about surround speaker type, LOL.

Respectfully

JT

m00n,

Did you tried the THX reference level. Is it to loud or do you like it louder??

Na I have not yet had a chance to even try it. I don't have a meter. The meter that was here that one day was not mine but the guy that came over. I am still waiting for a chance when my wife and little ones are not around. cwm1.gif

Plus I have to go back and re-read all about that once again. I was a bit confused by it all.
