Taz
I've got mc 30's running Khorns, but looked at Mcintosh 240 today. 1 How would this compare with the mc30's? How do the 2 compare, pro and cons. 2 Over all outside appearence looks pretty good. Very minor pitting and a few little scratchs on Black boxes, Has cage over the tubes. Asking price is 1800 or make offer. . Any idea what would be good counter offer if I should try to obtain this unit? 3 Looks like original tubes. Man at the shop said they played it without any issues and that the transformers didn't even get hot. Of course I would have to spend some time and listen before making any final decision. Presuming it is still available next week when I get back into town. [^o)] 4 If I should decide to obtain this unit, what range $$$ can I expect for tubes. I know nothing about what is good and what is not. Which would be tubes to desire and which to avoid. I Have an abundance of receivers and know that I am addicted to hoarding the old units. They may not keep me warm on a cold night, but at least they can sing in stereo and if I get tired of listening to them....just push a button, throw a switch and problem solved. Marvel
That's a reasonable price, even if you need work done on it. Check out these pirces for the 240... Terry Dewick does superb work, but it in the eastern u.s. http://mcintoshaudio.com/ http://www.audioclassics.com/cat.php3?cat=Amplifiers&p=
garyrc
Going from two mono 30s (if that's what you have) to a stereo 240 would give you a very small increase in headroom (about 1dB for each channel), so you would have to want them for some other reason. I used two mono mc40s to run my 2 channel system for a while. They sounded great except that they produced both hiss and hum through both JBL 030s and Klipschorns (which are about 2 dB more efficient than the JBLs). Since you are collecting, do you have a mc275? I love that amp. You could consider the new, improved (if it is) reissued mc275 just as soon as you win the lottery. Presently running a Marntz quad in upstairs living room. Have considered using that pre amp to feed the tube units and swap some of the other units in and out for grins and giggles on the Khorns. Marantz, Sansui, Pioneer if my son doesn't take it for x-mas I do not have the mc275. my tube gear consists of 2 mc30s, and one The Fisher 400 Marantz SS are 2270, 2323, 4270. Gave away a 2285B after having it gone though. She wanted something to "Hum to" Sansui SS are 9090, 9090db, G6000 and G7000 Pioneer SX950 to make a matched set for my son at X-mass If he wants it. He smoked one, so I bought him another and had the 1'st unit fixed.
garyrc
I once took a class called "Discover Your Ears" at SFSU. We went through practically every recording studio in the San Francisco Bay Area. THis was well into the Solid State era (1974). IMO the studio with the best sound in the control room was Wally Heider. They used 2 Mc275s for 4 channels of monitoring. One of the students asked why they didn't have Solid State (and McIntosh had several SS power amps at the time), and the answer was, "because we prefer tube amps, particularly these." Boxx
I cant' speak for the MC30's. However, I am big on McIntosh and have a pair of 275's, in an all "all tube" system. I don't think you will go wrong with the MC30's. Good Luck....
Audible Nectar
30's will offer the sweetest midrange of all the Macs (225 is also good in that department), the 240 will give a bit more bass "ooomph" and is a good sounding amp, just not quite as "holy" as the 30's midrange is (although it's still very good). Taz
Thanks for all the opinions. I believe I'll pass on the 240 and keep with the 2 mc 30 s. Still have other units to listen to that I've not hooked up. Just hate to disconect the mc 30 s.
