JL Sargent
After the what TV to buy thread recently I thought it interesting that Sony has bailed on this new tv technology that was supposed to be the end all of TVs. http://news.yahoo.com/sony-abandons-oled-tv-consumer-market-013204948.html

Audible Nectar
OLED isn't realistic in the current economy and price/performance ratio isn't good either. As mentioned in the article, professionals will use the technology, but it's going to be a number of years before irt sees consumer shelves, and that assumes that manufacturers are able to "scale up" to mass production. Mallette
Theoretically OLED production is far cheaper than any existing technology. However, it requires completely new facilities. Chicken or egg. Right, money is being made in huge piles with the existing technology so there is little drive. OLED will come into it's own when the time is right. The pro market is small, but like high end audio, has a lot of impact on the direction of things. "Red" 4k, a tiny market, is already beginning to impact consumers with talk of 4k media and monitors. OLEDs will make possible the first "holodeck" type rooms with self illuminating and disappearing walls that can take you anywhere, and "retro" newspapers that will be more like the real thing. But it will take a while. Dave
Quiet_Hollow
But it will take a while. We've heard this music before back in 1995 when plasma's were sputtering about. Give it another 10 years.. oh crap, that's right, it's 2012 now. The guy that was supposed to design my tele-porter was better paid designing levels for the next Halo.
