guestiguess
I’mnew to the forum – been reading your posts and working off local CL to put together asystem. Based on fond teen memories of police-intervention-inevitableKlipsch-powered parties I have been seeking the Klipsch brand only to be usedprimarily for loud classic rock. I found an old Sony AX401 amp (135W x 2) and matchingST-JX401 receiver packed away and picked up some KG 3.5s. They did crank upquite loud, and the punch of the KGs let me somewhat relive thatalways-at-the-point-of-blaring party sound. Perhaps my ears have changed overthe years. I still like the volume up, but with this setup the sound is a bitharsh. My ears seem to be begging for more midrange and cleaner vocals. I’mtaking these steps: 1. talking with member of your forum about possiblypurchasing pair of Forte IIs; 2. ordered Crites titanium diaphragms for KGtweets; and 3. am using local CL (Dallas Fort Worth) as primary resource, looking for inexpensive receiver that might improve overall sound. Thisbrings me to my question. Of the available receivers in my local market, whichof the following would you recommend to pair with the Forte IIs? I have no ideawhat information is helpful for your analysis so I am putting only the brand, model number, and asking price, assuming if you have heard of/listened to anyof these receivers you will have a recommendation. Of course I’m open toalternate suggestions – I simply want to put something together sooner thanlater and get back on task as husband and father, and then come back and playagain when things normalize (my wife has clearly detected a disturbance in theforce in our household with my renewed interest in audio and there is alingering tension that must be properly addressed). Here’swhat’s currently available and thank you for your opinions: Sansui G-8700DB – askingprice: $375 SANSUI QRX-3500 quad –asking price $200 sony str 4800sd – asking price$50 Harman kardon avr 335 –asking price $250 Harman kardon avr 525 –asking price $250 Harman Kardon 3480 – asking price $165 Yamaha CR 1040 – ASKING PRICE$200 YAMAHA CR 2040 – ASKING PRICE UNKNOWN (sellerlooking to trade for various items I may have) YAMAHA CR 220 – ASKING PRICE $50 Yamaha RX 770 – ASKING PRICE$100 Yamaha RX 497 – asking price$75 MARANTZ 2220B – ASKING PRICE $375 as part of packageonly including Technics-SL-D202 Tuner -- Excellent condition, Sony NC-665P 5disc DVD/CD player-excellent condition, Pair of Bose BooKshelf speakers, Pairof Toby D-60s--from 1987
willland
Guestiguess, Welcome to the forum. This may be long shot since this ad was placed on 12/13/11 but these Luxman receivers are awesome. I used one for some time to power my Fortes and it did a fantastic job. It also has preouts if you wanted to ad an amp later, but I assure you the R-115's 70w/channel is plenty strong to make the Forte II's thump. http://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/ele/2735609336.html Luxman R-115 - $100 (Frisco Plano McKinney) Date: 2011-12-13, 11:06AM CST Reply to: sale-x9t2u-2735609336@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?] LUXMAN R-115 Digital Synthesized AM/FM Stereo Receiver ( no remote ) Unit is in very clean condition, everything works 100% Same model selling for 200 to 300 on audiogon and ebay. cornfedksboy
Welcome to the forum! Others with more experience will surely chime in, but I'll give a few generalities: They will likely sound very good with tubes, but that might be out of your price range and/or not your thing. Many, many folks love their Sansui gear. I've never heard a Sansui and can't comment on either of the onew on your list. HK has nice sound, but I'm not sure about using those suround sound processors for 2-channel Heritage. Don't know how they match with Heritage, but the three Yamaha CR models are cool old receivers! Of that list, that would be my recommendation. The Marantz 2XXX series are also great! I've got the 2238B and love it. The 2220B would likely power some Forte's just beautifully in a small to medium size room, but you will lack some headroom. I would avoid that paticular deal as you can probably pick up a 2220B in great condition on ebay for $200.00 shipped. Also, they are fairly common if you are patient. guestiguess
cornfedksboy I do like the idea of tube amps, but yes, they are out of my budget. Thanks for your input
gnatnoop
i listened to my brother's HK receiver this weekend (with some speakers i'm familiar with) and thought it a bit harsh/bright. but to be fair, we're upgrading the source (old cd changer) first. Marantz and Yamaha both good, no experience with sansui.
Dennie
Hey Guestiguess, welcome to the Klipsch Forum, we're glad you're here. [<)] Other will be more helpful with that gear, I just wanted to say Welcome and if your still here in 6 months, you will have to change your name to "addicted" or something a little more permanent. guestiguess
gnatnoop, was your brother's HK receiver current or vintage?
guestiguess
Thanks for the welcome, Dennie. A name change as you suggest sounds like a good recipe for going broke.
gnatnoop
gnatnoop, was your brother's HK receiver current or vintage? best guess, probably 12 years old...
guestiguess
Looks like the options have narrowed to two receivers: Sansui G-8700DB – askingprice: $375 YAMAHA CR 2040 – ASKING PRICE: $150 The Yamaha seller confirmed the price which has me leaning more in that direction, although that Sansui is one beautiful beast. Both receivers are in excellent condition. The comments so far have been helpful and I would welcome more as this deal has not yet been finalized. wuzzzer
I've been extremely impressed by my Panasonic receiver. Its a completely digital amp. The model I have utilizes all the available power for both speakers so it ends up being 200 watts per speaker available. Check around for the Panasonic SA-XR series. Only a few models have the Dual Amp feature, though. There's a couple for sale on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=panasonic+sa-xr*&_sacat=See-All-Categories
Dennie
Wow....That's a Beast. (photo stolen from internet) Rated at 160 watts RMS per channel into 8 ohms. One of the last Sansui "monster" receivers Do you know if the Sansui has been serviced? Dennie
cornfedksboy
The 120 watt Yammy would be more than enough power. I would go audition both of these receivers.
guestiguess
Sansuiowner had this to say about service in the ad: …Tuner works well, alllights/Led's work.... controls cleaned, speaker protect relay replaced.... hardto find one in better condition... Yamahaowner stated he paid $90 to have the receiver serviced before it went intostorage for the past few years. Noresponse on the Luxman inquiry – assume it was sold. Wuzzzer, thePanasonic SA-XR57 certainly has expansion potential and that ebay item via yourlink does match my budget. A newer model may also prove to be more reliable. I’ll startby auditioning the Sansui and Yamaha and go from there.
