Usually, this is dreaming of finding a McIntosh classic amp at an estate sale for $50. Anyway, is it possible to run one without a preamp? For example, could you connect a smartphone or Logitech Squeezebox Touch or other device with a volume control directly to an amp? I realize these wouldn't the best sound sources. It can be done, but you need to ensure that when you plug in your source, that the volume on the source is set for minimum.
