Best blu ray player around 500?

Ok guys got the player today and have been playing with it

for last few hours. As others have said the packaging is as good as I have ever

seen. Got everything hooked up really easy. The oppo gives two hdmi outputs. Hdmi

1 has the highest video/3d and audio. Hdmi2 is close to 1 but isn’t 3d. So for

most people run hdmi1 to your avr and you’re done. But for me I’m using both. My

avr doesn’t support 3d so I’m running hdmi1 to my hdmi switch box and the other

to the avr. I also ordered some 3d glasses to mess around with 3d a little on

the projector.

First thing I did was hit the Netflix tab on the remote and

was up and running as fast as I could get my email and pass entered. Very fast about

the same as my ps3 and a little easier to move around with this remote vs a ps3

controller. So then went to blu rays, sacd and dvd-A. All work great and was

nice to finally play my steely dan dvd-A in the highest content. As far as comparing one players sound and picture

vs another is pretty tuff. The main reason I was able to see it was because I was

going back and forth between players in the middle of movies a lot (when the

ps3 wouldn’t play it) and after a while what you just shrug off starts to

really pop out at you.

To early go give a review on picture

and audio performance but it’s definitely not a cheap player with an oppo name

on it. The blu rays and sacds are faster than the ps3 (even when it was new) and

it’s built really solid. I can see why this brand is so popular (the hype seems

well earned).

Few new updates on the 103. So I dived into the video options

of the player. It has everything you can ask for and lots of stuff my other

players don’t have. I’m totally blown away by the improvement I can get with

these adjustments. My other players have some of these but they do more bad

than good. One example if I bump up the saturation on the oppo player I get a

huge upgrade in color and overall picture quality. I get no smearing or washed

out color and this is on a 125” screen. And that’s just one of many tweaks.

Bottom line after getting it tweaked and set up the picture quality

of the oppo 103 vs my other two players is embarrassingly huge. I had no idea

it would be this big. Whenever I messed with video stuff on other players it

made the picture worse. I’m going to try and get my sister over (she does photos

for a living) and have her bring some cameras so I can show side by side shots.

It is great to know Oppo is still making high quality players. When they announced the 103 and 105 I had this feeling in my guy that they would not be of the same caliber as their predecesors.

Not sure how it compares to the older ones. The control over

the audio and video is really impressive. I didn’t think I would use any off it

but wow wasn’t expecting that at all. Do you use the video adjustments on your

93?

The audio control is only for analog output and since I'm using HDMI, no. I haven't played with the video settings either as I prefer to do all of that in the TV.

Just like I was saying adding the video enhancements on the

oppo is huge. It adds so much that you just can’t get with the tv or projector

enhancements. The pics in the review show just what I was talking about its awesome!

hrmm, good to know. Only thing about doing the xbox thru it, is won't it cause more lag for online gaming since it has an extra component to go through? I guess it would be the same if you used the 2 HDMI outs too...

I run my Xbox thru my Onkyo receiver with no noticeable lag at all. We game a lot in our household and would notice immediately if this had been a problem. These HDMI connections as of late seem to be pretty swift with their information porting and transfers. I could see degradation at some point, perhaps 3+ connections, but two or less shouldn't be a problem. Two cents.

^^^what games do you play? Do you play online shooters? I would think the more components it goes through, the more lag. Even something as small as 20ms can mean the difference between death and kill.

Solid question. I play exclusively shooters (Call Of Duty-Modern Warfare, Call Of Duty-Black ops, Halo). The wifey plays Fable, Dragon Age and other RPG's. Funny though cause only a handful of our friends know we're hardcore gamers (we're late 20's early 30's). We've thrown multiple parties in the last few months with 50-150 people and everyone comments on the sound but no one notices all of the video game gear, lol. We own nearly every system around and hundreds of games, kinda hard to miss :/ But to the point, no noticeable lag at all.

^^^I have my xbox thru my AVR and I lag all the time. I've never tried hooking it up directly to the TV to see if it makes any difference. It's gotten so bad that I'm most likely not going to buy Black Ops 2. I have read that different TVs can also make a difference. I have a 4-5 year old panny plasma, not sure what the lag rating is on my particular model...I suppose once I get my Oppo, I may try to run the XBox thru it to see what happens.
