Oris 150's have arrived !

Latest iteration of audio nervosa led me to finally order the horns I have always wanted. The Oris 150s, shipped from the Netherlands last week via UPS. Very expensive to ship and nerve racking to imagine how UPS was treating them. Fortunately, Bert packed them in a custom crate. Here's what the big brown truck just dropped off:

My goal is to get them painted, put them together and then take some response readings outside. I will be starting out with some modest 8" drivers, the Tang Band 1800's. Can't see dropping another $2K for drivers just now. I hope to run them from just above 150Hz to 20kHz. My DBB's will take over from 150Hz to 70Hz via the Ashly Protea active crossover, followed by the RSW-15 subs from 70Hz to 20Hz. Should be fun!

I would love to try some Autotech horns, but they suffer the same problem as the Oris... High cost to import. Welborne Labs imported the Oris in the past, but that seemed to fall apart.

I found out that the shipping cost is the giant hurdle. Either the Autotech, Oris or Azurahorns are not all that expensive in and of themselves. Shipping is just killer though and Welborne no longer carries them. I have been waiting for over two years to find some locally and no luck. Finally just decided to get it done.

The Oris 250's can be shipped much cheaper, about 130 Euro. After long discussions with Bert, I decided just to get what I wanted, the 150 horns. Shipping was roughly 400 Euro.

I had been in touch with Martin of Azurahorn, and ran into the same issue. Hopefuylly it will have been worth the effort.

My story behind this is that ever since I heard a set of Oris 150 horns I have chasing that sound. I have gotten close with the Jabo horns and Faital drivers, but I still wanted to see if the 8" driver and a horn that can handle most of the frequency spectrum will make an improvement. Unfortunately, these aren't plug and play. They need to be primed, painted and put together.

Patience is not one of my virtues when it comes to audio.

Rudy I hope that you find your sound with the 150's and await with the others to hear how this all works out for you. Best regards Moray James.

Thank you sir. I am very optomistic. I am so close with my Jabo horns. I am also very interested with the measurements I will take outdoors. Not what can be done in an anechoic chamber, but the best I can achieve here. I'll be posting the plots and the impedence curves for the driver as soon as I have a little time. Work keeps getting in the way of the important stuff....like audio! [:D]

Looks like this is going to turn into a DIY paint program. Locar car painter wants $800 to paint them properly. $200 to just put a coat of paint and no prep or primer.

Looks like the listening experience and testing will just have to wait....[:'(]
