allgonoshow Posted March 27, 2013 Share Posted March 27, 2013 Hi folks. I have been trying some different speakers and hardware for my 2 channel room over the past year, used vintage stuff. I sold the older speakers I had, and got a set of new/old stock RF62 IV's and am running those with the Cambridge Audio stuff in my profile. This is a sweet combo but I would still like to move to separates. I made an impulsive purchase and bought used Anthem separates. I haven't hooked the stuff up yet and am wondering if it is not overkill for my needs and speakers, I don't play at high volumes. It's really not about the top output but more about how well the amp handles impedance dips. You have the volume control, you clearly have common sense, sit back and enjoy. BigCliff Posted March 28, 2013 Share Posted March 28, 2013 Not too much power unless you turn it up all the way. I used an old Kenwood Basic M2A, 220wpc, and was very happy with its performance. That being said the highest volume I had it on was at 1 o'clock on the volume control, and my Chorus IIs had to be pushing out close to 120db[]. I hooked the stuff up today and my first impression is a wow, a big wow as in rich and full and clear. The "live" Klipsch sound. My taste in music is changing from classic rock to more laid back and acoustic music where I enjoy the fidelity of the music rather than the quantity, if that makes sense. This set up will endure. More seat time is needed but I think this is going to be a keeper combo. My local dealer has some killer Klipsch premade speaker cables and I will add them next week. Maybe for the RF 's in the other room too. Oddly, my 2 channel room is also my home gym, but it is also my only real private space on the planet, my music, my volume and my whatever. A lot of us use 14 or 16 gauge speaker wire from Home Depot. It's cheap and it works. Now, I'm not saying don't, but be cautious. Good copper or silver wire works great, give it a chance and see how you like it. I completely understand what you are saying about "Quality over Quantity". Once I bought my La Scalas, the world of music opened up to me. I wanted to hear everything I could. I use to listen to Classic Rock, period. Now, just about everything except Classical, Opera and Rap. I do hope to get into Classical and possibly some Opera, some time in the future. But Jazz, Bluegrass, Rock, Showtunes, Soul, Regae, Pop, Standards etc... are my norm and I love it. Again, Congratulations on the new set up, you've done real good and are now listening to Hi-Fi. My Klipsch dealer is a very good customer of my business, so we kick things around, kinda barter stuff so cables are not a biggie. An example where my taste is going, found this guy on a friends cd. It has converted belles up front forte II's sides and quartets for rear centers. No problem with any of them. I have the pre amp locked at about 120 db max volumne. I think my origional question was more along the lines of whether the power output was redundant as opposed to whether the speakers could handle the power. Maybe sell the Anthem gear to someone with bigger speakers to run. But, after listening to the stuff, it sounds great and I will keep it. Larger power amps do provide some benefits over my lower powered amps.Headroom, control, etc. If you are happy with them, that is really all that matters.
