Where to put a down-firing sub woofer

I am moving into a condo, and the old owner has a built in wall unit. There is a self area for his sub-woofer (which was side-firing). this shelf was at the bottom of the unit and was about 4 inches from the floor.

He has a screen door in front of it.

Can I put the down-firing sub woofer (the one that comes with the Quintet Microsystem) also on that shelf? MUST it actually be on the floor (I know it has feet)?

Please respond if you know where the down-firing sub-woofer can be put.

Brian

I've read a few articles where it states that in a downward firing subwoofer, the actual driver is designed to be in the upside down position. Having the sub on its side would maybe not harm the mechanism but it would not be the optimum. Maybe one of the sub guys could pitch in....
