mustang guy Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 This should get you going under $300 Speakers Subwoofer Amplifier Wiring kit If the head unit has no RCA output this one has low level inputs. Amp Nice work Jason. I've never been to that seller. Quote
Gilbert Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 How about some horn loaded car audio? http://www.glasswolf.net/papers/horns.html Hey!!! I got a set of those in my bass boat, bought a nos set on ebay many moons ago and installed them under the console. They still sound great, highly efficient speaker system, that can scream loud and clear, but usually I have it turned down to a whisper. Their going to waste and are waaaay over-kill in my boat, but I love the sound quality. It's too bad there's nothing close to the JBL's of old. I use to love the T545's. Think I've owned 3 pair at 1 time or another. Best plug-n-chug 6x9 ever made IMHO. Quote
Jeff Matthews Posted January 4, 2014 Author Posted January 4, 2014 (edited) TY, everyone. I have 2 pair of Infinity Kappa 62.9l speakers coming my way. Great bargain at $75 a pair. I was going to add a 5 channel Kenwood amp and an 8" JBL woofer, but I got bogged-down on whether I really must have a $160 line out converter. http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_6359_AudioControl-LC6i-Gray-LC6.html The salesman insists (and maybe rightly so) that if I do not get the pricey line out converter, I will wind up with amplified, crappy sound. He says the LOC cleans up the noise/distortion produced by my head unit, and without it, all I would be doing with the amp is making crappy sound quality louder. Rather than delay at least making some improvement, I have the speakers on the way, while I investigate further into the other equipment. Edited January 4, 2014 by Jeff Matthews Quote
mustang guy Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I am not a big fan of the line-out converter I used. It was called a Cleansweep, and I used it when I upgraded a system on an 07 Civic. 2 JL amps, 4 component speaker sets, a sub and a Cleansweep. I wanted to use the OE head unit. It never sounded very good, and it cost a ton of money. Since then, I have replaced the head unit, and purchased a steering wheel interface. YMMV Quote
jlfx64 Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 From my old car audio days, you definately lose a lot when you hook up an amp to a head unit with no rca pre outs. I would agree with the salesman's statement. I remember very clearly that the rating (I think it was measured in volts) of the pre outs themselves made a huge difference. When you don't have pre outs at all, you will not get as good a sound. I think it is similar to hooking an Ipod up to a home audio system using a headphone out to L/R rca analog cable. I know its not apples to apples, but the same general principal. Never used the product he suggested, so I can't opine there. If you are serious about adding an amp, you really need a head unit with high output rca pre outs. Is MB Quartz still around? I used to love there component systems back in the day. Jeff Matthews Posted February 5, 2014 Author Posted February 5, 2014 The Final Verdict: In addition to the 4 Infinity Kappas, today, I had installed: 1. An NVX amp (http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_40253_NVX-JAD900.5.html), and 2. A JBL 8" woofer (http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_7443_JBL-GTO804.html). The total was more than twice my $300 budget, but I am very happy. It rocks! It can be done nicely with the factory radio (at least, I am very happy with keeping mine). Quote
holtrp Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 How about some horn loaded car audio? http://www.glasswolf.net/papers/horns.html Those ID horns are bad-***. This installer back in colorado turned me on to them back in the '90's. I never did get a pair but did run IDQ 15"s for a while. Image Dynamics makes a fantastic product. Look into Mmats for your amps too. Quote

Twice what you thought that you would spend, in my experience that is under budget. Quote
Arky Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Yep that's about right.....enjoy Jeff. I used to always upgrade my car stereos. Nowdays I just listen to sports talk. I'm getting old. Quote
RRR Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 The whole system for $600 is a great price, i paid about that for my 2 Infinity Kappa perfect subs. Glad things worked out. Quote

ertooso Posted July 29, 2019 Posted July 29, 2019 I always ran Rockford Fosgate but JL Audio would get my nod as well. Quote
