Oppo 103D first impressions

Just got the Oppo 103D the other day (12-27-13) off of amazon.

My first impression on the D part (darbee) is that it is a waste of money. I am using this on the HT in the sig. I played with the darbee on/off a few times and a certain points you could see doing a little something? I am going to say if you have a good receiver, TV and BRP the whole darbee part was a waste of my $100.

As for the player itself I am happy with that. So far the things I like. Plays WAV on the USB. Any one know the max USB thumb drive you can use? Does Utube. Seems like it will play any type of CD. But one thing I really like is I have a 7.1 system and when I was using my PS3 and played a 6.1 BRD it did not send any sound to the rear surround. With the oppo it will force the the 6th track to both the rear surround.

One thing I don't like is it does not do the Amazon videos. Already have it so there is no way I will pay for netflix also.

I am really surprised how this thing is packaged. It is the kind of packaging you would expect when you paid $600 for it. And to boot it comes with a carry bag. Not sure I would ever use it however.

Back to the Darbee. With my TV is seems useless. But may be it is designed to be used for crappy TV's? Or maybe poor source material like older DVD's? All I know is with my TV and a new Blu ray it seems pointless.

Anyone have any real luck with the darbee doing something really good?

I was thinking of putting my music on a 2 TB SSD drive and hook that up to the USB. Anyone tried this? Be nice to find out if this will work before I drop the money on the hard drive.

I am interested in the Hard Drive hookup.

How well does it work, how good is the interface and how easy is it to use?

Here is a review for the European version. Looks like it is possible. I want to know how well it works.

If you have the player, you can try to load some music on a memory stick and see how well the interface works.

I've never connected an external hard drive to my Oppo but I play a lot of music thru it via a USB stick. You need a tv or monitor to see what your doing. That being said, the interface is very intuitive. Album art is imported via Gracenote and you can shuffle, repeat, etc.....

There is a plethora of info on AVS and tons of people using external hard drives, NAS and a host of other methods...

Here are the official threads.......hope that helps :emotion-22:

I use a memory stick but, change to this recommended by some forum members: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-my-book-essential-3tb-external-usb-3-0-2-0-hard-drive-black/1261281.p?id=1218244145647&skuId=1261281&ref=06&loc=01&ci_src Current price around $122. This work better than any DNLA that I have tried.

So are you saying you just plug this hard drive in the to usb and it works? If thats the case this is what I will be doing.

Or this if it works.

Has anyone done this with one of those USB powered SSHD's? The ones that don't have a second power cord.

Right now all of my music it at about 69 GB's and that is at crappy mp3 or less quality. I am planning on redoing all my music so I am thinking I am going to need a HUGE amount or room. Seeing on how I will be going from an average of 6 mb per song to 60 mb per song? So doing the math I will still end up with less than 1 TB of music and can use the rest of the space for photos and movies since the oppo will play them also.

I use one of these docking stations to back up my server:

The beauty is that I can keep two separate HD's in rotation as backup. You can also swap drives and go to bigger and better drives whenever you want. It is a great solution if the Oppo will work seamlessly with a HD.

If you get one of these, keep a separate backup of your music on a extra HD and store it at work or at a friend's house.

So I went to Best buy today and got one of these on sale for $99. A 2TB portable HD. Works great. I put about 300 GB of music, photos and videos from my home computer on it. Took about an hour at most. Most everything plays fine. A few videos don't but not sure what file type they are yet. Its nice because it is only one cord to use it and it is small.

I have looked into this a little bit.

It looks like the way to go for HT is to use my Denon AVR5800 and an amp and volume control and get either the Oppo 103 or 105 as the Oppo seems to do everything that a smart TV or receiver will do. I do not see any receivers as powerful as the old Denon anymore.

Anyone have the Oppo and prefer to use their receiver to control everything?
