TasDom
Has anyone here ever seen this in person? The pictures look amazing, almost like another world.... Fly Geyser Located on a gated parcel of private property within the million-acre Black Rock Desert, Fly Geyser is not a natural phenomenon. It was created accidentally in 1964 from a geothermal test well inadequately capped. The scalding water has erupted from the well since then, leaving calcium carbonate deposits growing at the rate of several inches per year. The brilliant red and green coloring on the mounds is from thermophilic algae thriving in the extreme micro-climate of the geysers. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Fly+Geyser%2c+Nevada&FORM=IQFRBA&id=70ED0B65C407B27DE323D95E02709624A27C8A78&selectedIndex=44#view=detail&id=70ED0B65C407B27DE323D95E02709624A27C8A78&selectedIndex=

Yes that is amazing, not so much "photoshopping" going on, that's pretty much what it looks like.... tigerwoodKhorns
I was thinking motorcycle day trip, but that is far away. Looks like something that I do need to see, maybe a trip to Tahoe.

Moderators dtel Posted January 9, 2014 Moderators Share Posted January 9, 2014 Strange, I would guess some of the color is from minerals ?
JL Sargent
Looking at only the clouds in the image I would have to say they look kinda "crispy". Sharpness was definately boosted in the image IMHO. Still a cool phenomenon and one I would like to see in person.
Schu
definitely saturation and hue adjustments... I can see it right away. still beautiful Edited January 9, 2014 by Schu

oscarsear
Gotta wonder if there isn't a well head or 2 or 3 buried inside those mounds. They're a peculiar shape for such deposited features. Real lumpy but still uniform in size among all three.
oldenough
Sorry Schu....I meant it in a sarcastic way (hence the smiley wink)....but regardless they are fantastic images.
tigerwoodKhorns
Schu called it right. Google it and then go to images and there are some pics that are not touched up. https://www.google.com/search?q=Fly+Geyser,+Nevada&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=6Y7PUu3bJ8eGogT1pIK4DQ&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1261&bih=618#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=ZmEtD6ezDaPgfM%253A%3BaI0MY8w2kR44xM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252F1.bp.blogspot.com%252F_-zOrAL1V5Jg%252FTQ0b3iSVNbI%252FAAAAAAAAIwI%252FU5KrJQXyajY%252Fs640%252Ffly%25252Bgeyser%25252B10.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.kuriositas.com%252F2010%252F12%252Ffly-geyser-not-quite-of-this-world.html%3B640%3B415 Cool looking, but not that different than a lot of the desert here and in Utah and Arizona. Still beautiful and we definagtely do not have the geysers. Edited January 10, 2014 by tigerwoodKhorns
