Help with power for THX Ultra 2 system

Hi Guys. This is my first post, so I appreciate the input in advance. I'm building a 24X18X10 dedicated media room, (4320 cubic feet) and I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the power requirements for the THX Ultra 2 speaker system for this kind of space. I don't want to go too crazy, but I'm thinking the 150wpc or so of most integrated AVRs just isn't going to cut it. Also wondering if the dual sub setup in the system is enough, or whether I should double up and have 4 subs in the room. i will be building a baffle wall, and adding sound panels to the walls if that helps your opinion.

These are the pieces I'm looking at.

(3) KL-650-THX Bookshelf Speaker
(2) KL-525-THX Bookshelf Speaker
(2) KW-120-THX Subwoofer
(1) KS-525-THX Surround Speakers (pair)
(1) KA-1000-THX Amplifier

Thanks

any plans on buying used? i may be selling my set soon. and as far as power i would go with much more than that. at least 200 per channel. these speakers are power hungry. and i have had those subs, as well as dual svs ultra's and i think depending on what kind of bass you are expecting and how loud you listen, they could be enough, and then they might not be. please message me if you might be interested in a used set.

Just my opinion but I think you will want a separate amp or amps. I have the same setup except I opted for KL-650 rears instead of the KL-525's. I ran them off a Denon 3805 for a while and it sounded good but I did switch to separates and it became much better.

I am running my speakers with 2 Emotiva XPA-5's and I love them, but several here have complained about noise with them , FWIW mine have been silent ! and extremely reliable!

As far as the subs go , your room is bigger so I'm not sure? I have plenty with 2 in my room but I would love to have 4. That being said I would start with 2 and decide for yourself if you need 4.

This is a great system for watching movies !

Good Luck and Enjoy !

Welcome to the forum. Scrappy and I both run the THX Ultra 2 system and I can say I’m extremely happy with it. Most likely the last Home theater speaker system I will own for a very long time (not equipment though) I would say 150watts isn’t going to cut it for high volume listening. These speakers are the most power hungry out there but certainly more than the reference line. I noticed a huge improvement in using separates and even more improvement when implementing a Pre amp into the mix. Having full control over each speaker is certainly and upgrade and the addition of amp[s will gain extremely low distortion at reference level and bring out the bottom end , detail etc. You can probably find a nice used 7 channel amp rated at 200 watts per channel that would work just fine. I went with an Anthem A2 and A5 and find it is perfect. The L,C,R will benefit the more from the extra power per channel. If you have invested in these rather expensive speakers you might as well invest in the heart of the system your amps/pre/avr etc. My A2 outputs 225wpc and my A5 does 185 wpc. I use the A2 for the L, R and A5 for the reaming 7 speakers. I also use 2 KA-1000 sub amps with 4 KW120s. With the amount of amps, preamp, projectors, bluray player, etc. I decided to run my system on 2 dedicated 20 amp circuits also. When listening at loud levels all this equipment can use some juice. I also suggest buying the amps used (Ive purchased my amps all used in mint condition off audiogon).

Exactly the info I was looking for. Thank you. Do you happen to have any opinions on Emotiva amplifiers? Their new XPR-5(400 w/ch driven x 5) and XPA-2(300 w/ch driven x 2)look like good deals. That would give me a good 7 channels driven. I was then thinking of pairing that with the new Yamaha CX-A5000 pre-amp. Seeing as it's an 11.2 pre/amp system, I was then thinking of going with 2 UPA-200s (125w/ch driven x2) for the 4 "presence" speakers. Overkill?

As a bit of backstory, I currently have a Yamaha RX-V3800 AVR hooked up to a Revel Concerta 7.1 speaker system. This is in an 11x12 room. We are currently building a house where I am lucky enough to get myself an 18x24x10 sound treated media room, so needless to say, a serious upgrade! I',m definitely going to go with separates, but I don't want to go too "little" or too "big". I'm looking for the "Goldilocks" solution. Just right!

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

If you're planning to use the XPR-5 remember that you'll need a 20 amp outlet to plug it in. Now's your chance to get it wired up since you're building new. FWIW, I'd say 400 watts x 5 is on the "big" end of the spectrum, but that's just me.

Definitely a consideration as well as room and triggers for 4 Amps .

I also agree that 400 watts is probably on the big end, but I would love to try that amp.

FWIW I would probably do what I did and get 2 XPA-5'S.

My reasoning was why get the XPA2 for home theater when I wouldn't run just the front L and R in stereo for music and even at that , I didn't think there would be a big differance if I did. Plus for an additional $100 I would have 3 extra channels which could be used down the road say for 9.? , passive subs? or heaven forbid - I lost a channel . I have had this setup for over 5 years and none of these have occurred but I still have my options and peace of mind.

What sort of room size do you have?

THIS (by a trusted forum member) and a pre-pro and you're good to go. I can't tell you what a good buy this is.

Must say if this was available when I was looking I would have gone with it !

Matter of fact if it wasn't such a pain to take the other amps out I would give this a try . I'm pretty sure you couldn't lose.

Room specs and equipment are all in "my system" but the room is 14x23x10

Ok. Please be patient.

Here's what I'm thinking.

Yamaha CX-A5000 11.2 pre/pro

L/C/R: KL-650

Surround side/back: KL-650

Front/Back heights: KL-525

Subs: 4x KW-120

Sub amps:2x KA-1000

Amplifiers:

1x Emotiva XPA-5

2x Emotiva XPA-3

My question now is..... Should I substitute that B&K amp in there, somewhere?

Thanks again for all your input.

A nice 7 channel amp could handle the main 7 channels for movies and another amp for the matrix surround channels. I doubt there is any benefit in getting a 300-400 watt amp. Unless you are in a very large room, running 11 channels will not be a lot different than running a good 7.x. All the different surrounds need space from the mains and from each other to really hear the spatial cues that they reproduce.

That Yamaha looks like a great pre/pro. I love my Emo amps but for the appx. 2600.00 your considering for the XPA's, why not just get the matching 11 channel yammie amp for a few hundred more. Save some space and simplify your components..........just sayin :)
