were you by chance assigned to unit at B'ham AL?

Yes I was. The 117th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron it was called. I was an 455x0A Infrared sensor systems specialist. I enjoyed being a part of that outfit. I'm also a stateside veteran of the Gulf War. Different world back then.

Glad your vision has improved and I hope you learned your lessons about using Wal-Mart Drs.

Yea Carl not going back to the Walmart for glasses for sure. Ya know The BOSS has worn glasses all her life and shes gone to the chain type vision places and never had any real issues. I do think the doc at the Walmart I went to last year should have referred me to a specialist.

I've had them make glasses for me but I bring the prescription from my Dr.  They normally get it right 2 out of 3 times.

I know, been that busy MKP ? How is the boss doing ?

We haven't been too crazy busy..... but just been doing other crapp, you know how it gets. Kinda haven't been doing any forum thing lately.....

Still got tons of leaves in the yard and there never seems to be enough hours in the day to get chitt done. Haven't been able to anything for the past week and The BOSS has been a hawk on me. She didn't let me do anything this past week. Today was my 1st day back to the shop, glad to be out of the house for a whole day.

The BOSS is doing ok... Christmas week she'll be at her moms house watching her during the day. We're sending our daughter (and both grandkids) away to Disney to give her a vacation from watching The BOSS's mom. If you remember our eldest daughter has taken car of The BOSS's mom since her dad past almost two years ago. Our daughter has done an incredible job looking after mom. I really don't know what we would have done if she did not want to do this.

So for the week she'll be at moms I'll be at the shop. We have a care giver come in for the evenings and she spends the night. That would be Krystal, She does all the bathing and also helps our daughter out during the week for bathing. Krystal brings her Toyota to the shop and I take real good care of her.

Also there are a couple sisters that help out some..... and then there's the one you just don't ask to do anything:wacko:. There's been other crapp with the sisters...... I must say I'm glad I don't have brothers or sisters at times.

Shouldn't be too crazy Christmas week, got the week booked up..... gotta few people just leaving there car with me for the week. So hopefully it'll be a smooth week.

Later....

Back in 82-84 I was in a med-e-vac unit stationed at Biggs Army Airfield El Paso. It was a Army airfield but a lot of Air Force was present.

A few times while stationed there I had the pleasure of hearing/feeling F-4's taking off. They would take off 2 and 3 at the same time........... and kicking in those afterburners.

I remember my old 1st Sargent saying "All we need is F-4's and Huey's to win a war;)"

Hey Carl how you guys doing for work..... busy? slow? so so?

MKP :-)

The flood we had back in August screwed the normal work year up.  Sales sold 2 to 3 times the normal ammount of cars that it usually did for the following months.  We got backed up in service with flood repairs and had several great months.  We're feeling the effects of that now as sales is absolutely dead and service is extremely slow.  We're tap dancing trying to make a month.

Morning all! Downed my first cup. Time for another. All this Navy/Plane talk and pictures has me nostalgic. Can't let you all get away without seeing one of the best all time weapons platforms the F-14 Tomcat. Too bad (or perhaps good) that with the fall of the Soviet Union there was really no practical need for it. Below is one from my Squadron, the VF-102 Diamondbacks. Cool mascot and great paint on the planes, though I am probably biased. However I must admit the F-4 is a very cool looking plane. The Diamondbacks flew F-4s before F-14s.

Good morning :emotion-44:

Like looking at photos of past war era jets. The A-10 one I liked somewhat as per it's firepower. You of course know about it's fame, and the dread felt on the ground when they came around. As a 4th grader was distracted mightily by the books in the library. Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, and the like. Spent a lot of time drawing propeller driven airplanes of WWII vintage in class. Cannot remember now the discipline I received other than a frown or a warning.

Favorite at the time to draw was the P-40 Curtiss of the China/Japan fame. Was not very good at the time.

Was starting to get the feeling there was more than a couple of ex-navy and oter posting on the thread. Salute! :emotion-21:

I did a cat launch off the USS America in a C2 to beat the rest of the boat/squadron back to Oceana a few days early. I never did a carrier landing. Or was it the USS Roosevelt during a shake down? At any rate it was quite a ride.

I was stationed aboard the America from 1986-1990. The world gets smaller by the day😁

Did you do the Med Cruise 1986? Raced across the Atlantic at almost record speeds to get to the Gulf of Sidra and the Line of Death:o. VF-102 was always on the America when I was there. It is a small world. I left in 1988 after doing some workups on the TR. I'm sure we were on the America at the same time at some point. Do you recall the big hub-bub when Nancy Regan came for a visit? Much todo about nothing. Days and days of fussing about for a couple hours of a glorified tour that could have happened in port. I wonder how she liked the C-2 landing?

I shared an apartment with a guy that was ships company on the America. Funny that he had to sleep every night on the ship and I only had to when we were deployed with the squadron. Limited space at NAS Oceana, so I was actually getting paid more money to live off base while he was paying out of pocket to NOT be on the ship.

I'm still amazed at how big the Carriers are. I'm sure I never even saw all 5,000 people in a 6 month cruise.

Sure did do the Line of Death /Med cruise 86. I was a hole snipe (BT1), so any hub-bub that didn't involve fluorescent lights we werent involved in. I do remember the Chief engineer telling us the first lady was visiting us and that we had to make sure the bilges were clean enough to eat on. I was in 3mmr and we had fuel oil leaks constantly. We laughed and fell out at his remark. Some fun days.  Nostalgia reigns supreme today!

I did a trap on a greyhound.. had to see the dentist afterwards to get a crown glued back in. That backwards landing scared the heck out of me

When I did the catapult launch they told me to put my feet on the seat in front of me to push back and cross my arms over my chest, head/neck down. Kind of rolled up in a ball and pushing. You are indeed facing backwards so you basically get folded in half rather than pushed back in your seat (like a typical plane take off). I was 19 and stupid...telling myself I'm never going to experience this again...you better take it all in, sit straight up and look around. Zero to 120mph in less than 2 seconds. My neck and shoulders hurt for a week. I'm surprised I was not cut in half or my head torn off. I've been in a head on car crash at ~50mph where somebody in the other car that crossed the centerline was killed and it was not a violent as that cat-shot.

EDIT found this online....and people complain about the middle seat on a commercial flight. I think the old school lawn chairs with webbing were more supportive.

all these short stories from your service days are awesome!!!  LOVE reading them!

most of all - many thanks to all of you who served!  I'd love to call you all out by name, but you know what happens then - you leave someone out.  so I'll forego that.  but rest assured, you have MY utmost respect and gratitude.

Salute!  :emotion-21:

Like almost any city these days, we just always tended to be on our way somewhere else. One day I would like go ride on the Natchez Trace, but we always seem to be just passing by, every time we pass the sign we say that.

Several years ago we rode to TN/NC to ride the Dragon and surrounding areas. Quite the trip starting in KC, going to our first Pilgrammage in Hope where the venue was pre-Rodneys at "The Farmhouse"; Hope to Nashville where we caught the Natchez Trace to Tupelo then on to NC. The trace is really a nice, leisurely route with no trucks allowed, speed limit of 50 or 55 and no stop signs or lights the entire route. Take some time - do it.

Sad your 1st Sargent wasn't correct. Unfortunately all the F- 4's we could throw at them didn't get us the win in Vietnam. ---

I remember the farmhouse, can't forget it, it was the weekend I won some Cornwall lll's.

Been on the Dragon a few times, as a spectator taking pic's, weekends are best just to watch people pass through.

We do need to the Natchez Trace, our daughter has gone and came back with about 300 pictures of old houses.
