Definitive Technology Mythos ST vs. RF-83

Just looking for some input on this. On paper the Def Techs have the better specs and the build quality is absolutely amazing, aluminum with granite bases. They also have built in 300 watt subs and, at retail they are a bit more than the RF-83. I was hoping someone would have some input on the subject for me. Thanks....

Klipsch used to make a speaker just like that, the KSP-400 Synergy Premium Series! I personally would prefer an outboard sub and more robust speaker components. The efficiency is most likely sub 90db which means it will take gobs of power to even come close to the RF-83. When it comes to accuracy and dynamics (you can't show these on paper) I am certain they wont even be close.

Built-in subs look like a good ideal in a speaker. Subs need to go where they work best in the room, that simple. Main speakers fail this requirement with built-in subs. I know someone with those speaker that uses 4 external subs in his system. Def Tech makes some decent speakers but, Klipch systems with a sub should smoke them. Def tech may have a better WAF.

The spec sheet on the Def Tech Mythos says the sensitivity is 93db. As far as accuracy and dynamics, you feel the nod would go to klipsch?

as an owner of many both def tech & klipsch speakers (although not those models) i think it will come down to your personal taste in a speaker. the def techs are a great speaker & with adequit power sound very very good, some like them better as they arent as bright as klipsch. while klipsch are more efficient & therefore require less power to get good volume, if you have the extra power available to drive the def techs they can sound as good or better in some ways, again based on personal preferances, components & room variations.

93db is still pretty efficient, so if you have 100+ watts per channel i think the def techs will be a very nice speaker, especially if this is for home theater use. & the built in subs are nice for what they are, granted they are not top of the line subs & wont perform as good as a seperate sub, but they take up far less space & sound very good for a combined set up. if the speakers will be in or near the corners of the room i think you will be pleasantly surprised with how good they will sound.

& like you said, the build quality is 2nd to none at that price point. the boxes are braced & dampened very well & the granite base adds a nice touch. compared to a hollow box of the reference line of klipsch, they are light years ahead. i say audition them & decide which ones you like best.

Built-in Sub=1 more thing to break

& if 1 breaks, you are SoL

seperate subs = something to break too....

& with def tech, you are far from SOL. even when out of warranty you can contact them & 9 times out of 10 they will send you a replacement woofer or amp board for ... wait for it... FREE!

aside from being an all around good speaker, def tech has the best service in the business. i have bought a pair of used def tech bi polar speakers with the powered subs, the amp was bad on one speaker, i called them & they sent a new replacement for free, i didnt even have to ask, just mentioned it was bad & that i didnt have a receipt... proactively they offered to send a new one. & on top of that sent a woofer "just in case" it was damaged by the amp going bad. blew my mind to get that kind of service for speakers that were out of the warranty & i wasnt the original owner. so rest assured that def tech will treat you right or you can buy a replacement at their cost. a new sub amp for most speakers is about $80.

back on topic, i have heard the mythos speakers in the store & they do sound good & are a direct radiating speaker, i prefer the bi polar models with built in sub. you can get the 7000 series for great deals on ebay or used, & while they sound great for music with good gear, they are ammazing for movie use.

i know it can be tough saying other brands are good on a brand specific forum, but i'm just stating my opinion to the question asked. i do like the heritage series klipsch for my main 2ch system & prefer klipsch in general, but i am not biased & feel many other speaker brands have their strong points too.

I've got a pair of KSP-400's and KSP-300's and they're great. I sold many other pair of Klipsch speakers I owned and kept the KSP's. I really liked the Chorus and Chorus II's I had but I sold them, since they didn't compare to the KSP's.

Of course it's cheaper to buy the spec sheet paper that some base their opinion/comments on and if that's what you want then fine. If you want to actually listen to some speakers and know how those speakers sound then you should listen to them and base your opinion on their sound rather than their specs.

I wouldn't worry about the built in sub comments, most of these guys don't know what they're talking about.

Threads on broken KSP amps are very common. I've read many, as well as work arounds on using external amplification.

He's talking about buying Definitive Technology speakers, not Klipsch speakers. The KSP line is 15 years old, again the guy is asking about NEW DT speakers. The KSP amps are easily repaired, like old crossovers. The built-in subs are not too different than stand alone subs, or crossovers, in that they will require maintenance after many years.

I think he should listen to the speakers and buy based on his preference of their sound.

OP... just go ahead and get the definitive speakers. If you have to ask, you're going to be happy with any klipsch set up.

Gosh a bit harsh. Though there is some truth. I personally think that combining speakers and amps at that price level is like paying 2% for financial advice when they recommend selected mutual funds. More of an anvil to the head is when the recommend load funds.
