joessportster
So we bank at a small 4 or 5 branch bank and they refuse to accept coins ............Instead they direct you to a coin counter (which I would have no problem with except that upon testing it, I loose coins) I put an odd amount on the tray 1.35 and it prints a ticket for 96 cent, call the teller and let her know, Now it becomes a debate on proper usage, I was not putting enough money on the belt for it to work properly.......I respond I counted the change before bringing it in and I will happily dump 180.00 worth on the belt if they will only guarantee the machine We cant do that sir So banks have effectively figured out a way to rob penny banks, I guess I will have to teach my kids to save dollars not pennies Oh Yea, I asked about rolls, said I would roll my oun "we wont accept rolls" I thought coins were legal tender and had to be accepted apparently I was wrong, There is no law that requires a business to accept coins, and banks are private businesses All us rainy day jar savers need to rethink our small savings...............Big Business screwing the little guy again for pennies What a wonderful place we have allowed america to become END RANT
babadono
Joessportster Uh.......time to find a new bank or better yet a credit union. No affiliations with either other than being another penny ante operator customer.
mungkiman
Or use the coins to pay for parking tickets, taxes you disagree with, the water bill, etc.
joessportster
Yea I know it. Now is just not a good time for me to do that.............I also looked up online and apparently this is becoming a common practice with a lot of online complaints
mungkiman
These days, I try to spend coins as I get them. Paying with a card eliminates the problem, but may cause others.
RT FAN
What ever you do, do not use one of those coin counting machines you see in supermarkets. They charge a 10% fee for counting your money. 90 cents on the dollar is a lousy deal if you ask me.
oldtimer
Banks are private businesses but they are federally and/or state regulated. Maybe it's time to make some noise to our representatives.

minermark
So I gather from all the replys so far is, $.90 aint so bad after all. Last time I ran my old first aid box full of coinage, I think I walked out with aprox $200+ and they took maybe $11 to $15 bucks. im good with that.
JL Sargent
Some banks will take all the coins you have unrolled accepting them for deposit. We bank at a very small bank and I specifically asked about coins. They said "bring em on in unrolled and we'll take em"

Coytee
I started at a bank in November. Read this thread and asked one of the bankers if they 'wanted' coins... answer was no. I asked about rolled....he said they'd take them. I asked, what if there are slugs in there. "we put a code on each roll, tying it back to the customers account. If it comes up short, we know who to talk to" He didn't state that they'd take it out of the account but it was inferred. Again, this was on rolled coins. I don't know why the policy (attitude) and didn't ask. My wife used to keep a change piggy bank of stuff she pulled out of the laundry. It totaled a couple hundred dollars over time. (this was pre-working at the bank) I took a pocketful each day and bought a biscuit or a coke or put $7.00 towards my grocery bill.... finally worked it down to nothing.
toolz
Interesting, the bank and credit union we deal with have never had issues with taking coin. I use up most of my coin in cash transactions but it usually screws up the young cashiers making change.

If My total is $15.99, I give the cashier $21 as I'd rather have a single $5 than 4 x $
mungkiman
Coins are a pain for banks in terms of weight/volume to value.
toolz
Now you are really messing with them, they don't know how to count back. You just get the look....
Mighty Favog
I take almost all my rolled coins to my gas station. They love it for their register drawers which are almost always running low.
ZAKO
I just throw all my coins up in the air and let them bounce off my head...
