I liked HK back when I had my AVR-240 I think it was. I thought it sounded nice and warm. Then I went to a newer model, and didn't care for it. Now I am running the Onkyo TX-NR509, I think its a great receiver and haven't had the urge to upgrade lately. But, Marantz, and Denon are 2 brands I would like to try out sometime. The Marantz you mentioned is for 7.1 if you only need 5.1 then the model down was 100.00 cheaper. But one thing concerns me,(I know our speakers are efficient). But these Marantz are only 50 watts a channel, maybe that's typical, not sure. But may still be good to try out.

Love both my HK 3490 and HK 3600. Matt, I compared my RF7, RF7ii and RF83 on the HK 3490. You are correct, the RF7s are almost too bright but that is the characteristic of the RF7, not the receiver. The RF83 & RF7ii sound beautiful on the HK 3490 but both of them have a more laid back upper register.

I have very similar models in use right now in my home and would not consider anything other than a hk or marantz through years of trial and error. The only problem i had was with a marantz 1402 and the right rear channel having no sound. It was taken care of after months of sitting in a box then i plugged(noticed the rr ch was no working) it in then still waited a few months yet again to swap it for a new one and all was good. With hk surround sound and klipsch you cannot go wrong. Only issue i have ever had with any hk is my own personal user error.

If i take it correctly you are looking at the hk270 for theater use and 1604 as back up. If so sounds like your set. Out of over 100 surround sound receivers I have owned Harman kardon is quite premium for the average consumer let alone a modest audiophile. Marantz is a tight second. Harman k may be just a bit more user friendly over all. Marantz is easy as well although just takes a bit more to get used too. Very nice choices. The best of luck to you. I bet that 1604 wont even see the day of light as back up. Cheers!

What I found was that HK was a more musical receiver than some of the other brands. Pioneer Elite was a warm great match with Klipsch, denon very neutral and great with movies, Onkyo overall a mix between pioneer and denon. I have never heard or owned a Marantz but I can recommend that HK was great when I listened to it on my home system. I had it paired with my RF-8 system so that may be why I didn’t sound bright to me but it is the one I would try first. I have read great things about the new Marantz higher end pre-pros but again can’t recommend any of the products since I haven’t heard them.

its amazing how different the responses you get when asked these questions. i just recently talked with another member and he bought a pioneer and absolutely hated it. I've owned a harmon pardon and thought it sounded just fine. what i hated about it was the user interface. maybe because i wasn't used to it, but it just confused the heck out of me. I've owned a pioneer and thought it was just so so on sound and interface. i currently own onkyo and denon. i like them both. denon is fine upstairs for home theater and music. a little under powered when i get crazy with the volume but fine if i stay at -10 or below. now my onkyo, its fantastic for movies, but with music its not as great to me. at least until i discovered that i hate listening to music with any kind of room correction on. i turn the onkyo on pure (no eq and speakers full range no sub) and i enjoy it as much as my old pioneer sx receiver in my 2 channel setup. and to me that is about as good as it gets. now i will also say pure is NOT the same on my denon. it leaves the subs on and doesn't sound anywhere close to as good as my 805 does. i really want to try a higher end receiver as i read they focus much more on analog side as well as HT. something like anthem is on my list. you give up a lot on features but i think it would be worth it.
