especially when i compared with my current synergy sf2 on the other side. i bought it after a quick test and was unable to tell that it didnt sound right. so far, i tried cleaning the metal bridge and biwiring, and nothing has worked. any ideas what may be the issue? thanks in advanced.

thanks for the replies. yes these are used along with an rc-35 and rs-25s that i bought at a good price. now i also found out that the tweeter on the center is not working though the surrounds are fine. they did sound ok when i listened, but it was quick and we were testing one speaker at a time and i didnt pay attention carefully but just making sure they work.

ive bought and sold anything online from small led bulbs to vehicles and this is the first issue i am having. i bought a klipsch dock, my current synergy setup and my heresy II all without any problems.

im looking into cost on repairing them and might contact the seller to see if we can work something out.

Did you read the Comments section on the Klipsch website about the RF-25 Speakers?

Comments about Klipsch RF-25 Floorstanding Speaker:

Tweeters blow very easily. They have new replacement ones that are better, but, of course, they will sell them to you for $30 each. Klipsch will not admit that they went cheap on the tweeters in the first place.

I just did a review on the DNA-360, an $80 Compression Driver with a 1" throat. It uses 2/or bolt mounting. Sonically (to my ears, not specs which I did not check), it matched up very closely with the older Klipsch K-63 tweeter.

My Un-scientific review of the DNA-360 vs K-63 on the Klipsch Forum

If that tweeter really is problem, I would be hesitant to put the same flawed tweeter back into it. I would think Bob Crites would be the guy to ask.

thanks for the info. the tweeter issue is with the rc-35 that i found out later. i informed the seller already about all the issues. but im focusing on learning a lot on these so far and looking forward to possibly doing the repairs myself.

I wouldn't. The former owner probably just drove them too hard. Some people think that it's ok to keep turning the volume up after the speakers stop responding to changes with the knob.

My guess is that the tweeter is blown.

I have not worked on units like yours but let me make the following suggestions.

You seem to have bi-wiring terminals in that you've cleaned the jumpers, with no improvement.

You can remove the jumper and connect the amp to the lower terminals which are probably the woofer. You might find you get the same muddy sound. This just shows the woofer is working.

Then connect the amp to the upper terminals which feed the tweeters. You will probably hear nothing because the tweeters are blown.

Then you're going to have to remove the tweeter horns. Maybe this is just a matter of unscrewing from the front.

Take note of which wires go where on the back of the tweeter horns. (Which is toward to top and whether there is a small red dot marking or a + sign in the plastic, and the color of the wire going to it. There may be a stripe.)

My guess is that they have small push on terminals which you can pull apart. Tape the wires to the box so they don't fall back into the box.

The problem is that the voice coil on the driver is burned out. The good news is that the driver is fairly modular and you will see some machine and nuts screws to take it apart. It might be best to wait unit you get a replacement voice coil unit before you take it apart.

Crites or Klipsch should be able to sell you a replacement diaphragm unit. I bought some for my Quartets at about $40 apiece. When I bought them from Klipsch there was a diagram which was a 10th generation photocopy of the set up. But it is easy to figure out.

I think you will be able to do this yourself

Keep us informed and if you send photos people here can help..

thanks. i did exactly what you posted to confirm the tweeter not working on the center. the tower drivers are all working when i did the same thing. yes, i've been in touch with crites regarding the crossovers and tweeter and will probably send it to him if nothing works out with the seller. i also opened some of them just out of curiosity and found out that the internals is simpler than what i thought. :)

p.s. just wondering if it would be safe to test the drivers from the rf-25 to the synergy sf2 towers? ill only do it if completely safe. or ill find a simpler way.

If you want to transfer the tweeter over to the SF-2 for testing by substituting the suspected bad tweeter for what is in the SF-2, that would be okay.

I do think it is a waste of time because it seems pretty well determined at this point that you have an open (burned out) voice coil. So why risk messing up the SF-2 by taking it apart any further. Okay, though, I understand you've been taking them apart already. It is like Tom Edison taking his father's watch apart to see how it works. Lots of us are like that. Smile.

I had not considered what you imply. That you can ship the tweeter as a unit off to Crites and have him do the replacement of the diaphragm. But it makes sense. Bob is a full service type of guy.

sorry, i meant crossovers to be sent, but tweeter to be replaced.

its been days and no reply to the seller, so time for me to do something and restore these abused beauties.

good and bad. bob has my crossovers now and confirmed that they are all working fine. now i have to test the actual speakers when i get home.

i think i have this all figured out now - all three speakers might have the wrong tweeter. i tested one and reported to bob that it read 3.2 ohms and i said it was fine since it was rated 3 ohms. bob then replied that i should check since he expected the reading to be around 8 and expecting an 8 ohm tweeter. i took all three and found out that this is the right model (k137, k-130-dn, 160734) but it should be the 8 ohm version 160744 according to klipsch specs. i hope this is it, i just need to find 3 correct tweeters.

p.s. i did more research and found similar tweeter issue on another forum with the same 3 ohm speaker and klipsch replaced them with a newer 8 ohm tweeter with a matching crossover. so i guess the old/early batches came with these 3ohms for both rf-25 and rc-35 and replacements are the 8ohms with a different crossover.

at this point ill contact klipsch directly to determine which one i need.

according to klipsch, theyve never heard of the 3 ohm tweeter being used and it got me checking again. all three tweeters are stamped 3 ohm. at this point, it looks like i simply need the right ones k137 and should be arriving in a few days.

i got them working now after replacing the speaker. my guess is that these have the wrong ones to begin with for some reason, though the owner claimed he bought it new.

but things came up on the bright side. i might have to give these up and get a stadium.

thanks again to all the replies here. also, i just realized throughout the whole thing i emailed klipsch for quotes for possible parts at least 3 times, all with 0 reply. i did get the info but only when i called. i hope this is not the case when i need actual support.
