Cornwall I Before and sort of after....

Bought these a couple of weeks ago and posted pics. Veneer was trashed and I stripped almost all of it off, other than the top of one...Finally got some great weather this weekend, and was able to take them outside and do some sanding...wow, what a difference....took them all the way from 80 grit to 600....The neighbors were not too happy with all my noise, but....I need to get a Klipsch T-shirt.....

So now, all I need to do is decide how to "finish" them....so I'll ask your advice....I don't mind the way they look now, and they are not meant to be showpieces anyway...can I just oil them (with what?), or should I stain and seal, or? I'm not a woodworker, but I now know how to use an orbital hand sander....!! woo Hoo!

I will fill them in with wood filler, sand again, etc.

Thanks, Jim

Given their condition I would seriously consider simply painting them with some sort of textured paint. Prior to the finish paint, you will need to fill in the surface imperfections, attach some trim to hide the end grain (on the front), and prime the surfaces. For a medium quality job, you are looking at a few repetitions of sanding, spackling and primiing. For a high quality job, it is even more involved.

Otherwise, I would suggest coercing a buddy or relative with a set of tools and know-how to prep and then re-veeneer the cabinets and put an oil finish on them. That would not be a trivial task and not meant for a first-timer, but the results can be stunning.

Good luck

I certainly do admire the work you have done demonstrating how well clapped out cabs appear when ready for finishing. 80 to 600 grit allows for a smooth surface to adhere a nice selection of veneer(600grit is possibly a bit too smooth although very nice as they sit). If you do so chose to paint i would consider reversing the work you have taken to about 180 or 220grit paper then fill in the spaces that are upon your cabinets. Actually at this point where you stand it would be nice to find as original of veneer as possible. Also with the work you have endured i would consider a very nice choice fruit wood veneer or something that stands out as much as the work you have invested in reinventing your cornwall' appearance.

It would as well be an outstanding look to simply apply protection to the bare cabinets as you have them right now. Cheers to you and your lovely refinishing work.
