Marantz 2226b restored

Time to shed some gear.

I have a very nice Marantz 2226b up for sale. It was completely gone through by Robert Bowdish at irebuildmarantz in Jan of 2012. All caps, pots, LED upgrade and tuning were done. Despite what anyone has read about Robert and irebuildmarantz, I have nothing but positive things to say about his work and business.

Full disclosure: I think it has an aftermarket woodcase that isn't quite as robust /nice as some of the other ones I have seen. Still, it gets lots of compliments in our living room. One of the vents on the side is a little loose, but could probably be fixed with glue.

The tuner antenna / handle looking thing on the back is a little loose and wiggles a little bit. Might just be a loose screw on the inside, but it really isn't important so I haven't tried to mess with it.

After I first got it back, the dial would slip a little bit and not turn left when trying to tune in stations on occasion. I would have to pull off the faceplate and move the needle by hand to get it to start moving again (30 second task). Over the past 18 months of pretty consistent use, this has happened less and less and it hasn't been an issue at all for the past 10 months but, full disclosure.

Other than that, this receiver puts out great sound through all channels. All features work without issue. It has a nice warm phono preamp and the tuner is exceptionally clear. All tone controls work flawlessly.

I have over $600 into it for shipping and repairs and am letting it go for $400 + shipping obo. I will forward the invoice for repairs to whoever buys it.

I'm sorry but I find it very hard to swallow that you complimented the guy who worked on your Marantz and yet your still having annoyingl little problems. The case being after market,your ok w/ that but a loose screw on the antenna(not important enough) and then the tuning needle or cord needs to be moved by hand by taking the face plate off?. Sorry but your asking top dollar for not such a sought after or higher wattage 22xx series still w/ problems and marginally restored. All of that should have been fixed when you sent it in or I would have sent it back. It was opened to do the recap and LEDs why not the tuner? Heck I just bought a 6065 Nikko w/ 34 watts cira '76 in near perfect shape w/ a composite wood case green difuser and has fm pulling in power I haven't heard in a long time.Yes your Marantz is worth more but not by that much w/ what's wrong w/ it .Tuning is a major part of those amps and I would toss it out the window if it did not go across the band as it should. Fix all of it or call it a project w/ some minor hurdles

Just to be clear, there is nothing on this unit that 'needs' to be repaired. Everything works just fine. I haven't had any issues with the dial sticking in almost a year and even when it did it, it was very infrequent.

Obviously, being 30+ years old and completely re-capped it is not new in box. Cheers if you can find one that is or find someone that can make it so.

Also, if anyone else is interested, I found another tech in Prescott AZ that does fantastic work restoring these things. He just redid my 2270 and it turned out completely awesome for a very good price, sends pictures throughout the build and keeps you up to date with exactly what he is working on. With the new guy that bought irebuildmarantz and Tom over at AK both not accepting new units and carrying a 48 month backlog, good techs are in high demand.

WOW!!!! I have not read ONE good thing about Bowdish and he has sold the business. The new owner seems to have some of the same issues in terms of wait time and customer service. Just the fact that the unit was returned with some issues after being "gone through" is an indication of the issues others have had. If I ever open a business, I hope my customers are as forgiving as you. Notice the guy who is #1 in the queue sent his deposit in during September 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

BTW, I am not saying your receiver is not worth the asking price, just commenting on Bowdish.

Anyway, it is good that you have given disclosure. I have been pleased with my purchases via the garage sale section only about 75 to 80% of the time. The dissatisfaction usually comes from conveniently omitted information and sometimes miscommunication. It is important for both parties to be clear, spell things out, and ask questions. Saves grief later.

I make people pay the full amount to hold their place in line. But then, 50 - 70% of that is for the parts I ordered specific to their build. Milt Sparks, who makes custom gun leather, at one time had a waiting list that was over a year and a half.

I'd like to apologize for giving the impression that this unit needs additional work before being acceptable. I was only trying to point out that if there are a couple of nit-pick type things that might bother the new owner, they can probably be dealt with.

I think we all appreciate the OP's disclosure. Also, the deposit isn't the issue. But when the first people on the waiting list have been there since 2009, there is a problem.

With respect to the Garage Sales, I have had great luck. I will never find a deal like I got on the K'horns :P and I am very happy with the Peach, Parasound and B&K as well. :):) On the other hand, I got a slight sunburn on AudiogoN. I do think that buying from active Forum members increases the probability of not being surprised. That is not to say that Newbies should be avoided, but those who consider this a home are not going to mislead their house mates.

I didn't catch that, wow.

I announced a three month wait back in the months of November through February. I told Debbie that I was starting to get uncomfortable taking money from people. At what point do you stop taking money. This business is feast or famine - turning down business is stupid, but taking money and not keeping up with demand isn't healthy either. I think this situation is what got Ron Welborne in trouble. 2009 is crazy, I can't even imagine. He should have hired a person or two just for the purpose of keeping his integrity intact.

Well, I guess there are two ways to look at it. It is relevant to the sale as it deals with an aspect that the OP raised, AND from the OP's point of view it keeps his ad in the forefront.

I guess we see things differently. This is an ad. It is not about us.
