A Crossover Design on Single Exposed Board

Recommended Posts

Very nice work!

IMO Jantzen is de the best.

Can i ask what drivers you are using is your ls?

Thanks Zoef

The next but small upgrade in the works is the new specialised capacitors in the Tweeter section

I'm waiting for the production of more values that I require of the Jentzen Alumen Z Cap

http://www.jantzen-audio.com/alumen-z-cap/

My drivers are

Bass - Crites CW1526C 15 inch cast woofers.

Mid Range - Great Plains Audio 399 A compression driver

JBL 2404H “Baby Cheeks” tweeters.

Nice!! Yes the alumen. Can't wait to try those! !!

Will keep the forum updated as the changes happen

But the system is sublime as it is now

Any other changes are just pepper and salt to taste :)

Hi all

I have been tweaking again so an update is in order

It takes a lot listening time to get it just right and I believe that this is Nirvana for me

I have made some slight changes and ultra fine tuning the crossover points and have installed some Jantzen Audio Alumen Z-Cap to the tweeter section

As it stands

Based on what crossover info was originally presented and built
Original xover was specc'd @ ~500 / 6,000

Based on the 8.5% change in cap value from 7.5uF to 8.2uF in the tweeter section
The crossover point should now be approximately ~500 / 5,600

" Please Note that my mods are based on the drivers used in my system "

Crites CW1526C 15 inch cast woofers.

Great Plains Audio 399 A mid compression drivers, fitted to -Elliptrac 400 timber mid range horns

JBL 2404H “Baby Cheeks” tweeters.

" So if your drivers fall into similar specs - I'm sure that your listening experience will be enhanced if you choose to go down this path "

Listening impressions - after installing the Jantzen Alumen Z-Cap

Differences are slight but also a slightly different flavour

Overall - slightly more presence, more live realness

However with extended listening of my custom track list, I can tell that those subtle differences after the latest changes make my listening experience more pleasurable
Two differences of note are
When one hears a finger squeak on a guitar string " live " one normally gets a tinkle in ones solar plexus, my system now reproduces that feeling

On complex flute compositions as in one of my test tracks where flute is mixed with precise heavy bass normally in high volume listening - the flute will reverberate inside the ear canal but now it's tamed and very pleasant

Try listening to this track as a test ' Third Ear Audio - Ethereality ' and compare

Rock is punchy and not stressed

Male and female voices have clear clarity and presence

Definition in the high register is flawless

Bass is unaffected and still punches hard and fast as before

I will leave you all with the final schematic should you choose to follow in my footsteps

And some of the most recent photos of the modification changes

The grey capacitors in the photos are the Jantzen Audio Alumen Z-Cap

Listening tests conducted through these components

Amp - First Watt M2

Pre Amp - Nakamichi CA5 II

Source - Cyrus CD8 SE CD player with PSX

Speakers - Klipsch La Scala - Highly Modified

Cheers

Update

I have been testing the crossovers - giving them some burn in time, and have found them very agreeable

Sound is beautiful at this crossover point @ 500htz for this setup combination

Myself and the builder of the crossovers, have given a score of 9 out of 10

I will however tweak the crossover minimally by replacing or adding

1) Pathaudio earthed Resistors to the tweeter section

2) Mills Resistors to the tweeter PCB

3) Duelund standard Resistor

4) Jentzen flat wax Inductor Coils to service the mid and tweeter sections

I feel and hope that these tweak additions to the crossovers will take the La Scalas to another level and then I will sit and enjoy the music forever more :) ( famous last words )

Just taken a short video ( hope it does the system justice )

I will have to make an update video of the same track for comparison

Some changes have been made to the components so you will get an updated snapshot in video time

Should be by the end of May

So you ended up using a mix of both the Standard AND Cast Duelund resistors?

How much attenuation are you using with the 2404's? I do not need tweeter attenuation with my current configuration, just curious.

I am using the 2404H(from my 3-way Jube Clones)the Eliptrac 400(also from my 3-way Jube Clones with TAD TD-4001's)now with Mr. Crites A-55 mid drivers with my un-ported La Scalas. Volti Audio VX crossovers.

I will not be able to afford to go back to the TAD anytime soon but plan on replacing the A-55's with B&C DCM50's. The A-55 Drivers really are quite nice sounding however. Probably the single biggest mistake I have ever made in this hobby and this year marks my 50th year in it was selling the TD-4001's. They were pristine/like new cosmetically with original BE Diaphragms. There really is NOTHING quite like them. Ah, but I digress.

I have constructed a pair of the port boxes and have four Precision Ports from Parts Express ready to install. I love the way they sound right now so I will get to the porting thing at some point. Just in no rush right now.

The bass box you have was not built by Klipsch in Hope,  it is homemade.  Nothing in your speakers is or was  Klipsch made.

You should post in a DIY forum.

I actually prefer Milk in my Cheerios.

Whew, that was a close one. Glad I just laminated and veneered a pair of stock La Scala Bass Bins with OEM K-33's for mine, sheeesh!

@mach-1 Ask and you shall receive grasshopper

There is a whole thread on the bass box extension subject on this thread - https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/108425-la-scala-bass-reflex-mod/

A look at my location may also answer why it's DIY

Just because the construction is DIY does not mean it's inferior - In Fact it exceeds all factory specs

P.S. - This thread is about crossovers

I use a combination of cast and standard in the mid section

However I have swapped over the Path Audio for a Duelund cast in the tweeter section

Never mind. I can see by your pics that your jumper is on the -3db setting.

Well that is wrong,  no factory dimensions in the build,  port opening without EV  eq box from Interface
(think Bose)  Boom box for sure!

Mate you have a bee in your bonnet - I posted a reply back in May and you reply in October

Did you actually read the build thread ?

If you did - you would have picked up the fact that another member built the speakers and I purchased them and tweaked them to sound so good that it melts your heart

I don’t want to be disrespectful but can you please just accept my judgment that the speakers sound superb

In past for about 25+ years I have built many horn loaded speakers based on the Lowther drivers so I have a fair bit of knowledge and experience as to what sounds good and what does not

PLEASE NOTE - in the quoted section and in subsequent posts - member mach 1 has been a little critical

However he has lost face and changed his forum name several times

The current name is AXZ Hout
