My GOD man!

I finally got the rest of the 8320s for my Atmos channels. I have all 4 mounted and wired, but I am waiting on another pair of XLRs to hookup the amp and preamp. Today I worked on 8 more ceiling panels...all will be empty, but 2 of them will be concealing the Atmos speakers. Hopefully by Sunday I will have all 8 panels finished (3 are complete, and 5 just need the fabric), and installed (the hard part).

Update... Atmos is up and running with all 4 ceiling JBLs.

I just got my 2 signs for the HT back from a friend who made the frames for me. They came out great but one of them got scratched. :(

When I order more signs for other components I will most likely order a replacement for the DTS-X one.

System changes are coming...

(2) Crest CM2080 8 channel amps (200wpcx8)

I will be selling my Yamaha XM4080 (4x80), and my Oppo 103 (since it has only been used a couple of times in almost a year since buying it new). I also will be selling my Yamaha MXA5000 11 channel amp that i bought last August. When I am ready to move them I will post them up in the classifieds.

Time for some more pic's of the HT Ellis.  Curious to see how much the 11 ch. Yamaha list for.

I am looking at around $1600 for the unit... I will have to check what they are going for currently used.

I have one more additional upgrade on the way. I have a 2nd Dirac unit on the way...this will allow me to Dirac tune the Atmos channels, and not have to EQ them with the Yamaha preamp.

Question - would you also lose your angle settings for your Atmos channels - aren't those set in YPAO-R.S.C.?  I'm using a miniDSP(non DIRAC) for my subwoofer EQ.

I am not sure... I know one other user that is using 2 Dirac DDRC-88As and he said it was better than using EQ from his AVR. That to me is the biggie. I have my speakers pointed directly down from the ceiling. We will see how it works out. :)

One big plus for me is that with 2 Dirac units, I can do 4 saved settings that will control all of my speakers. I will have a stereo tune for 1st, and 2nd rows, and a movie tune for first and second rows now.

I have 2 more 2 channel amps coming for my horns... Parasound Zamp v3. Hopefully these will be as great as I have read about them. They are just what I was looking for... a A/B low power amp! I should have one in today and the other next week. :)

I got the DDRC-88A/M units up, and running today. :)

I also found out something interesting today...when I had the Yamaha MX-A5000 amp hooked up everything sounded good, but I felt there was a lack of dynamics. When we had the front 3 channels hooked up with the subs, and the Crest Audio/Yamaha 4080 amps, we noticed the dynamics were back. Today when I went to run the front 3 channels on Dirac #1 everything sounded great, but when I went to run the rear, and Atmos channels on Dirac #2, I couldn't get the levels up to match the fronts (fronts are 112db, and surrounds are 91db). I then remembered the Crest Audio amps have a "0", and "X40" setting for gain. I switched the Atmos/Surround channels to "X40", and my levels were almost exactly the same as the fronts in Dirac!

This brings up a question:

How was the Yamaha doing it before? I am thinking that the CX-A5100 was knocking the output down for the front 3 channels, and boosting the Atmos/Surround channels up to get the levels equal. I think this might also be why we seemed to be missing dynamics.

Any thoughts on this?

As you have most likely seen in Chris's 402MEH thread... I have decided to try a wooden version. Mine will not be the same, but uses the Synergy idea, and Chris and Joe are helping me get this one planned out, and tuned (when it is completed. There is a lot of cutting to do for this one and some interesting angles to work out before our first one is completed. We are about half way to completion on one horn, and this has taken about 10 hours so war (spread over 2 weekends). Hopefully another 5 hours will have it ready for paint. The next 2 I am hoping go faster since we have learned from this one.

Here are some pics of the setup so far.

You are going to have one heck of a HT's when you are all done Ellis!

Thanks Derrick... I can't wait to get the first one done, and tuned, and then get 2 more made up. If this works out like I anticipate it will...then I might even make smaller versions for my surrounds and Atmos channels. :)

Sunday was a long day... the multiple angles were tough to get figured out, but my friend and I prevailed, and we got it figured out. We also made 2 more templates so it will be easier on the next 2 speakers.
Here are a couple of pics of the horns so far...we still need to trim them flush with the cabinet (for the 2nd angle extensions), make a better transition from the horn driver to the horn, and seal any gaps.

Today we got it to the point that we only need the following:
1: fill holes with wood putty
2: mount speaker wire jacks, and wire speakers up
3: sand speaker cabinet
4: install weatherstripping for sealing cabinet

Hopefully next time we will be to fire it up to see how the compression driver sounds, and then also how the woofers sound. At that time it might be ready to take home, and set up the crossover...for some real serious listening. Front 1.jpgFront 2.jpgrear shot.jpg

Today I am starting with the deconstruction of the front stage. The plan is to:

1: Move the screen closer to the front wall which will allow me to move the front and 2nd row closer to the front of the room.

2: Lower the screen to where the bottom of the frame is about 8" from the floor which will allow me to have room to hinge the screen for maintenance, and put my CD players under the screen.

3: Eliminate the equipment rack, and install most of the equipment behind or under the screen.

4: Once the rack is gone i will expand the cd storage width, and then move the left wall over a foot (closer to the cd storage rack.

5: Make more fabric panels for the area in front of the screen.

The second part I would like to do is remove the rear platform. When this is done the DTS-10s can go on the side walls facing the MLP. The next part would then be to remove the hallway, and lower the floor back down to the same level as the theater is (currently it is a carpeted ramp).

We will see how much deconstruction I can get done by myself this weekend. I will post up picks for the Q-Pies, and JBL 2360A horns which are for sale (since they will be visable).
